The Effectiveness Of A Congestive Heart Failure Teaching Program To Community-Based Elders, Debbie Meggs Aug 2003

The Effectiveness Of A Congestive Heart Failure Teaching Program To Community-Based Elders, Debbie Meggs

MSN Research Projects

Heart failure affects more than 4.6 million people in the United States (Dahl & Penque, 2000). While mortality from myocardial infarction is on the decline, congestive heart failure numbers continue to rise. Statistics indicate that 550,000 cases occur each year, at an estimated cost of $21.4 billion a year (National Institutes of Health, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, 2002). Elders with congestive heart failure (CHF) do not always understand their disease nor do they recognize its symptoms. Recognition of CHF symptoms can lead to improved management and self-care. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to provide basic, low-literacy …

Effect Of Nitric Acid Oxidation On Vapor Grown Carbon Fibers (Vgcfs). Use Of These Fibers In Epoxy Composites, Priya V. Lakshminarayanan Aug 2003

Effect Of Nitric Acid Oxidation On Vapor Grown Carbon Fibers (Vgcfs). Use Of These Fibers In Epoxy Composites, Priya V. Lakshminarayanan

Theses and Dissertations

Pyrograf IIITM,/sup> fibers (PR-19-PS, Applied Sciences, Inc.) with 100-300 nm diameters and ~ 10-100 ìm lengths were used with a low viscosity aliphatic epoxy resin (Clearstream 9000, Clearstream Products, Inc.) to produce composites. The VGCFs were oxidized in 69-71 wt% nitric acid (115°C) for various times (10 min to 24 h) to modify the surface to enhance fiber/matrix adhesion. Remarkably, little fiber weight loss was detected even after 24 h of oxidation. Composites containing 19.2 volume percent (29.4 weight percent) VGCFs were prepared. Their flexural strengths and flexural moduli were obtained. The flexural strengths did not increase using oxidized VGCFs. …

Passive Acoustic Measurement Of Baseball Bat Swing Speed, Donald Kirby Nance Aug 2003

Passive Acoustic Measurement Of Baseball Bat Swing Speed, Donald Kirby Nance

Theses and Dissertations

The experimental program presented in this paper explores a passive acoustic baseball bat swing speed measurement technique to aid in product development and certification and to gauge player performance. The collection of experimental information is performed in two facilities?a swing/hit facility and a wind tunnel facility. The data acquired are pressures and velocities in the vicinity of the bat. Potential flow theory is utilized to better understand the signals generated in the experimental collection of data and to determine the fundamental relations applicable to the subsequent flow field produced by a moving bat. The measured flow resembles potential flow but …

Uncertainty Analysis For Rocket-Based Combined Cycle (Rbcc) Systems Testing, Boon Chuan Law Aug 2003

Uncertainty Analysis For Rocket-Based Combined Cycle (Rbcc) Systems Testing, Boon Chuan Law

Theses and Dissertations

General uncertainty analysis was used to evaluate the performance of a Rocket-Based Combined Cycle (RBCC) engine system. To estimate the uncertainties of test results, uncertainties of basic measurements such as temperature, pressure, mass flow rate, and thrust were determined. The desired test results of interest included specific impulse and characteristic velocity. Various possible test facilities were reviewed to obtain background information and example test run conditions. Based on the test run conditions, five methods of determining specific impulse were evaluated. Also, theoretical and actual characteristic velocities were analyzed to evaluate C* efficiency. Initially, general uncertainty analyses were completed relative to …

The Evaluation Of Type-M Forager® Sponge Technology To Recycle Soil-Washing Amendments, Rhonda Spiess Fetters Aug 2003

The Evaluation Of Type-M Forager® Sponge Technology To Recycle Soil-Washing Amendments, Rhonda Spiess Fetters

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine if two commonly used soil-washing extracting agents, namely EDTA and nitric acid, could be recycled and reused in subsequent soil-washing processes. This research focuses on the removal of lead from three real-world soils collected from military installations and the evaluation of a chelating polymer termed Type-M Forager® Sponge to recycle the soil-washing effluent. The results of this experiment indicate that the EDTA soil-washing effluent was as effective at removing lead from soil after two recycle processes as it was during the initial simulated soil-washing process. The nitric acid extracting agent solution, however, …

Chemically Deposited Optical Fiber Humidity Sensor, Parikshit S. Gaikwad Aug 2003

Chemically Deposited Optical Fiber Humidity Sensor, Parikshit S. Gaikwad

Theses and Dissertations

Humidity measurement in industries is a critical factor, since it may affect the business cost of the product, end product quality, optimal functioning of equipment, and the health and safety of the personnel. Hence, humidity sensing is becoming very important, especially in the control systems for industrial processes. Since humidity is expressed in different ways, it is very difficult to come up with a reliable, consistent, and repeatable humidity measurement approach. In contrast to other sensors employed for measuring other parameters like temperature and pressure, a humidity sensor has to be in contact with the process environment and hence is …

Combined Ozone And Ultraviolet Inactivation Of Escherichia Coli, Gaurav Savant Aug 2003

Combined Ozone And Ultraviolet Inactivation Of Escherichia Coli, Gaurav Savant

Theses and Dissertations

The kinetics of Escherichia coli inactivation were studied using ultraviolet (UV) radiation, ozone, and UV and ozone (UVO) in combination in a batch reactor at varying pH levels (6, 7, and 8) and at a constant temperature of 25°C. The inactivation kinetics for all three treatment processes was pseudo first order, and the reaction rate constants were considered to be additive such that a combined reaction rate could be obtained by adding the kinetic rates of the processes applied and numerically small rates could be neglected in the computation of the combined rate. Statistical tests (ANOVA and student's t-test) performed …

Avhrr-Based Spectral Vegetation Index For Quantitative Assessment Of Vegetation State And Productivity: Calibration And Validation, Felix Kogan, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Edige Zakarin, Lev Spivak, Lubov Lebed

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The goal of the work was to estimate, quantitatively, vegetation state and productivity using AVHRR-based Vegetation Condition Index (VCI). The VCI algorithm includes application of post-launch calibration to visible channels, calculation of NDVI from channels’ reflectance, removal of high-frequency noise from NDVI’s annual time series, stratification of ecosystem resources, and separation of ecosystem and weather components in the NDVI value. The weather component was calculated by normalizing the NDVI to the difference of the extreme NDVI fluctuations (maximum and minimum), derived from multi-year data for each week and land pixel. The VCI was compared with wheat density measured in Kazakhstan. …
