As Runs The Deer, Mignon Fahr
As Runs The Deer, Mignon Fahr
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
These eleven chapters comprise Part One of a novel of thirty-seven chapters, entitled As Runs the Deer. It is a dialectic play on the processes of Time, as well as a play with evolving dialects. Nominally set in the 19th c., in an Appalachian-like terrain, it shows the difficulties James Ian Pierson meets when emerging out of his wilderness to re-enter his former life. Opening his own story by means of his sycamore cane, the 19- yr.-old amnesiac must soon reconcile his past with the invading "Now!" He evades the intrusion of a drunken hunter, is overcome by the wintry …
The Association Between Callous-Unemotional Traits And Emotional Processing Within Individuals And Across Generations, Eva Kimonis
The Association Between Callous-Unemotional Traits And Emotional Processing Within Individuals And Across Generations, Eva Kimonis
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
There is evidence to suggest that an impaired ability to process distressing and threatening emotional stimuli may result in a callous-unemotional (CU) and thrill-andadventure- seeking (TAS) personality. In this study we examined emotional processing in fifty community children, each with one parent, using the emotional pictures dot-probe task, which is a computerized task measuring attention to emotional pictures in the form of a facilitation score. The relationship between emotional processing, CU traits, and TAS were examined to determine whether individuals high on CU traits would also be more TAS, and show a lack of facilitation to emotional pictures. The results …
Water Quality Modeling Of A Storm Water Channel, Sivaramakrishnan Sangameswaran
Water Quality Modeling Of A Storm Water Channel, Sivaramakrishnan Sangameswaran
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The fate of nutrients and their relationships in the London Avenue Canal is very complex. This study was undertaken to assess the water quality of the canal in wet and dry weather conditions, and to develop a 2 "“ layer model to predict the response of the canal to storm water discharges. Samples were collected at specific locations and at five different depths during wet and dry weather periods. These were used as background values in the model and for comparing the model output with the actual field results to verify the validity of the model. A 2-layer model has …

Why Wonder Bread Lost No Dough: Materiality, Settlements And The Ftc's Ad Substantiation Program, Richard S. Higgins, Fred S. Mcchesney
Law and Economics Papers
Previous studies (e.g., by Sam Peltzman) demonstrate the powerful share-value effects of Federal Trade Commission (FTC) actions against firms whose advertising the FTC claims violate the law. Curiously, however, when the FTC announces an investigation but simultaneous settlement of the case with the advertiser, no adverse impact results, an empirical finding thus far unexplained. This article uses a recent FTC action, in which the accused advertiser suffered no adverse equity impact, to explain that result. Many advertising messages challenged by the FTC are not material to consumers. If not - and especially when, as in the case discussed here, the …

Aquatic Oligochaeta (Annelida: Lumbriculidae, Haplotaxidae, Naididae, Tubificidae) Of Utah, Douglas R. Spencer, Richard L. Denton
Western North American Naturalist
Thirty-six species of aquatic Oligochaeta (Lumbriculidae, Haplotaxidae, Naididae, Tubificidae) are now known from Utah. Aquatic habitats in 27 counties were sampled, with 32 oligochaete species identified. An additional 4 species were added from other published investigations. The majority of species are cosmopolitan and occur in other areas of North America. Nais barbata, N. alpina, and N. pardalis are reported from the western United States for the first time. Ilyodrilus frantzi was found to be a major component of the oliogochaete fauna in the Great Basin lentic environment. The North American distribution of Telmatodrilus vejdovskyi is extended significantly eastward. Tow undetermined …
Estimates Of The Incidence Of Mistletoes In Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands Of The Coconino National Forest, Arizona, Carolyn M. Daugherty, Robert L. Mathiasen
Estimates Of The Incidence Of Mistletoes In Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands Of The Coconino National Forest, Arizona, Carolyn M. Daugherty, Robert L. Mathiasen
Western North American Naturalist
The relative incidence of mistletoes found in pinyon-juniper woodlands is estimated for the Coconino National Forest, Arizona, using a roadside survey. Approximately 50% of the pinyon-juniper woodlands surveyed were infested with juniper mistletoes (Phoradendron juniperinum or P. capitellatum). In contrast, only about 12% of the areas surveyed were infested with pinyon dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium divaricatum). In these infested woodlands, 70% with juniper mistletoes and 44% with pinyon dwarf mistletoe were lightly infested. Most areas where pinyon dwarf mistletoe populations were observed (90%) also had juniper mistletoe (P. juniperinum) present, but many juniper mistletoe populations …

West Nile Virus: Emerging Threat To Public Health And Animal Health, Robert G. Mclean
West Nile Virus: Emerging Threat To Public Health And Animal Health, Robert G. Mclean
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
West Nile virus (WNV) is in the genus Flavivirus, family Flavioiridae, and is closely related to other members of this genus: Japanese encephalitis virus in Southeast Asia, Murray Valley encephalitis virus in Australia, and St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus in North and South America. The principal vertebrate hosts for these arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are wild birds, and the primary vectors are mosquitoes. Little clinical disease or mortality has been reported previously in wild birds from natural infection with these viruses, although significant morbidity and mortality has occurred in humans and domestic animals. West Nile virus (WNV) previously occurred …
Discrimination: The Law Vs. Morality, Walter E. Williams
Discrimination: The Law Vs. Morality, Walter E. Williams
ExpressO
Terminology in racial literature is such that various behaviors are confused with one another making for less than rigorous analysis of racial problems. For some writers prejudice is used in a fashion signifying distaste for a particular race; others use the term suggesting the use of racial stereotypes; yet others use the term as a substitute for discrimination. Similar confusion surrounds the term segregation. Writers frequently refer to school segregation, meaning that few blacks in attendance at a predominantly white school but the same writers would never apply the term to an opera performance with few or no blacks in …
International Poverty Law: A Response To Economic Globalization, Timothy K. Kuhner
International Poverty Law: A Response To Economic Globalization, Timothy K. Kuhner
ExpressO
This paper is directed at poverty lawyers and, more generally, anyone with an interest in the relationship between poverty and globalization. In this paper, I argue that poverty law needs to expand its scope in order to encompass the international dimensions of poverty, and to thereby become responsive to the current nature of poverty. This need is evident, because wealth and poverty have been globalized, domestic issues have become international issues, and international issues have become domestic issues and produced domestic changes. After establishing these premises, I describe five areas of research and advocacy, each of which is located within …

Hypoxia-induced VEGF governs both physiological retinal vascular development and pathological retinal neovascularization. In the current paper, the mechanisms of physiological and pathological neovascularization are compared and contrasted. During pathological neovascularization, both the absolute and relative expression levels for VEGF164 increased to a greater degree than during physiological neovascularization. Furthermore, extensive leukocyte adhesion was observed at the leading edge of pathological, but not physiological, neovascularization. When a VEGF164-specific neutralizing aptamer was administered, it potently suppressed the leukocyte adhesion and pathological neovascularization, whereas it had little or no effect on physiological neovascularization. In parallel experiments, genetically altered VEGF164 …

The Spiritual Self: Toward A Conceptualization Of Spiritual Identity Development, Timothy B. Smith, Justin B. Poll
The Spiritual Self: Toward A Conceptualization Of Spiritual Identity Development, Timothy B. Smith, Justin B. Poll
Faculty Publications
Both researchers and practitioners have demonstrated considerable interest in identity development, and positive personal identities have been associated with numerous positive mental health outcomes. However, major theories of identity development have neglected the salience of spiritual identity, even though the early work of William James placed this as a central component of personality. This article reviews four major theories of identity development (cognitive, psychodynamic, systems, and narrative) and suggests spiritual identity parallels to these theories. A tentative model of spiritual identity development is presented. Implications for therapy and future research concerning spiritual identity development are discussed.
The Secretary's Commission On Opportunity In Athletics Squandered Its Opportunity: Commercial College Sports And Why Title Ix Cannot Achieve Full Gender Equality Or Prevent The Elimination Of Minor Men's Teams, Suzanne Sangree
ExpressO
The Department of Education recently announced that it would not revise the regulations which apply Title IX to athletics, thus rejecting the recommendations of its Commission on Opportunity in Athletics. The Commission’s recommendations would have drastically undercut Title IX’s efficacy and established a Bush Administration model for turning civil rights protections on their heads. Fortunately, the Administration heeded the public critique of the Commission’s recommendations and retreated from its previously stated intention to implement them. Instead, it reiterated its support for the principles of gender equality embodied in Title IX. We thus narrowly averted a civil rights disaster. The great …
