Correlations Between Activity And Blood Pressure In African American Women And Girls, Brian A. Murray, C. Jayne Brahler, Janine Baer, John Marotta
Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications
Is the level of physical activity recommended by the Surgeon General enough to elicit the beneficial effects of exercise on blood pressure in African American women and girls? This study investigated self-reported physical activity level and its relationship to blood pressure in a population of African American women (N=25) between the ages of 21 and 53 years and girls (N=52) between the ages of 5 and 17 years, in Dayton, Ohio, USA. Physical activity levels were estimated by an interviewer-administered questionnaire, which determined the average hours per week over the past year spent in occupational and leisure activities. Blood pressure …

Staying Longer At School And Absenteeism: Evidence From Australian Research And The Longitudinal Surveys Of Australian Youth., Sheldon Rothman
LSAY Conference Papers
Youth in Transition (YIT), a program of longitudinal surveys conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), began in 1978. The program was designed to trace national samples of 6 000 young people who were born in 1961 and had participated as 14-year-olds in the Australian Studies in School Performance in 1975 (Keeves & Bourke, 1976). New samples were added in 1981, 1985 and 1989, based on cohorts of young people born in 1965, 1970 and 1975, respectively. Data were collected on each of the first three cohorts until the mid-1990s; data collection from the 1975 birth cohort ended …

Marketing Health Promotion For People With Disabilities, Craig Ravesloot Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute
Health and Wellness
Healthy People 2010 is the blueprint for improving the health and well being of all Americans. Its overall focus is to decrease health risks and to increase the proportion of people engaging in healthy behaviors. For the first time, Healthy People includes a chapter on the health of people with disabilities. Chapter Six specifically addresses secondary conditions as a public health concern. Secondary conditions are medical and psycho-social conditions people often experience following the onset of disabilities or chronic illnesses. Our research suggests people with disabilities annually experience 14 secondary conditions that limit their health and independence.

Measuring School Effects Across Grades, Njora Hungi
Measuring School Effects Across Grades, Njora Hungi
Shannon Research Press
This study investigates the issue of the value-added components of the education provided across Grade 3 and Grade 5 in primary schools in South Australia and how these components could be measured. The study shows that it is very difficult to identify effective or ineffective schools because the amount of variance left unexplained at the school-level is small. As a solution to this problem, it is more meaningful to identify effective or ineffective schools when the school effects are expressed in terms of years of learning that a student spends at school.

Disability & Aging
The HCBS Work Book is a technical assistance guide to assist state agencies with their HCBS quality improvement efforts. It provides step-by-step guidance on how to conduct quality improvement projects within the HCBS waiver program, and illustrates the principles of quality improvement in an easy to use format. The Work Book was developed for CMS by the Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine.
A 'Causal' Estimate Of The Effect Of Schooling On Full-Time Employment Among Young Australians, Chris Ryan
A 'Causal' Estimate Of The Effect Of Schooling On Full-Time Employment Among Young Australians, Chris Ryan
LSAY Research Reports
This paper exploits a policy change that occurred in South Australia in the mid 1980s to generate a 'causal' estimate of the effect of schooling on full-time employment outcomes. The Early Years of School policy changed the way that an identifiable subset of students progressed through junior primary school, causing them to obtain an additional year of schooling for any completed grade or level compared with their predecessors. The policy affected individuals born in specific months of the year (most of those born in October to February inclusive and some of those born in July to September inclusive) whereas individuals …

New Mexico's Right To Know: The Impacts Of Lanl Operations On Public Health And The Environment, Concerned Citizens For Nuclear Safety, Steve Wind Ph.D., Bernd Franke, Catherine M. Richards M.S, David Richardson
Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety (CCNS)
Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety (CCNS) contracted with Bernd Franke, Catherine M. Richards, M.S., Steve Wing, Ph.D., and David Richardson, Ph.D. to investigate the following public health issues concerning LANL emissions:
• Historical and current emissions of radioactive materials from LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory) operations into the air;
• Incidence and mortality rates for LAC (Los Alamos County) residents for 24 types of cancer compared with state and national reference populations; and
• Occupational health studies of LANL employees exposed to radionuclides.
These studies focus on localized impacts at LANL and in LAC. LANL employees and LAC residents may …

Subsistence Food Use In Unalaska And Nikolski, Aleutian/Pribil Of Islands Association, Institute For Circumpolar Health Studies, Kari Hamrick, Janell Smith
Aleutian/Pribil of Islands Association
The purpose of this project was to document established subsistence use patterns for two Tribes represented by APIA; the Nikolski Tribe and the Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska. The APIA Environmental Program, directed by Bob Patrick works with communities in the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands region to determine the health impacts posed by the nuclear weapons tests conducted at Amchitka Island, which is in close proximity to the villages of Nikolski and Unalaska. The actual amounts of subsistence foods consumed by individuals in each community that are reported in this document is needed to provide a better understanding of food preferences, …

Randomization Tests For Small Samples: An Application For Genetic Expression Data, Gary L. Gadbury, Grier P. Page, Moonseong Heo, John D. Mountz, David B. Allison
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
An advantage of randomization tests for small samples is that an exact P-value can be computed under an additive model. a disadvantage with very small sample sizes is that the resulting discrete distribution for P-values can make it mathematically impossible for a P-value to attain a particular degree of significance. We investigate a distribution of P-values that arises when several thousand randomization tests are conducted simultaneously using small samples, a situation that arises with microarray gene expression data. We show that the distribution yields valuable information regarding groups of genes that are differentially expressed between two groups: A treatment group …

Modern Statistical Methods For Handling Missing Repeated Measurements In Obesity Trial Data: Beyond Locf, Gary L. Gadbury, C. S. Coffey, D. B. Allison
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper brings together some modern statistical methods to address the problem of missing data in obesity trials with repeated measurements. Such missing data occur when subjects miss one or more follow-up visits or drop out early from an obesity trial. a common approach to dealing with missing data because of dropout is 'last observation carried forward' (LOCF). This method, although intuitively appealing, requires restrictive assumptions to produce valid statistical conclusions. We review the need for obesity trials, the assumptions that must be made regarding missing data in such trials, and some modern statistical methods for analyzing data containing missing …
Barriers And Best Practices: Marketing Health Promotion For People With Disabilities, Craig Ravesloot Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute
Barriers And Best Practices: Marketing Health Promotion For People With Disabilities, Craig Ravesloot Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute
Health and Wellness
Health promotion for people with disabilities attracts a diverse audience: people with disabilities themselves, policymakers, service providers and others. This Guideline discusses our research on effective strategies for marketing and promoting RTC: Rural’s two health promotion programs: Living Well with a Disability (an eight-week workshop) and the New Directions physical activity program. It also describes the barriers people with disabilities anticipate when they consider participating in a health promotion program. If marketing strategies address these barriers, more people with disabilities may participate in health promotion activities. Secondary conditions are the medical and psycho-social conditions people with disabilities often experience following …
