Block Scheduling And Music Education: Building Time For Effective Education, Laura J. Horst Jan 2003

Block Scheduling And Music Education: Building Time For Effective Education, Laura J. Horst

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Block scheduling is investigated in this study as a strategy of scheduling, specifically in the secondary vocal music program. There is a need to document the process of effective teaching in vocal music for extended teaching periods. Although there are certain agreed upon elements of successful music programs, much is unknown about teaching in the block format in vocal music. Nationally, music education programs are calling for an increased level of awareness in alternative scheduling, and therefore, teacher preparation programs have answered with various courses and integrated attempts to prepare preservice teachers as well as retrain experienced teachers to work …

Use Of Ground-Based Canopy Reflectance To Determine Radiation Capture, Nitrogen And Water Status, And Final Yield In Wheat, Glen L. Ritchie Jan 2003

Use Of Ground-Based Canopy Reflectance To Determine Radiation Capture, Nitrogen And Water Status, And Final Yield In Wheat, Glen L. Ritchie

Publications

Ground-based spectral imaging devices offer an important supplement to satellite imagery. Hand-held, ground-based sensors allow rapid, inexpensive measurements that are not affected by the earth’s atmosphere. They also provide a basis for high altitude spectral indices. We quantified the spectral reflectance characteristics of hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Westbred 936) in research plots subjected to either nitrogen or water stress in a two year study. Both types of stress reduced ground cover, which was evaluated by digital photography and compared with ten spectral reflectance indices. On plots with a similar soil background, simple indices such as the normalized …

Determination Of The Substrate-Docking Site Of Protein Tyrosine Kinase C-Terminal Src Kinase, Sungsoo Lee, Xiaofeng Lin, Nguyen Hai Nam, Keykavous Parang, Gongqin Sun Jan 2003

Determination Of The Substrate-Docking Site Of Protein Tyrosine Kinase C-Terminal Src Kinase, Sungsoo Lee, Xiaofeng Lin, Nguyen Hai Nam, Keykavous Parang, Gongqin Sun

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Protein tyrosine kinases (PTK) are key enzymes of mammalian signal transduction. For the fidelity of signal transduction, each PTK phosphorylates only one or a few proteins on specific Tyr residues. Substrate specificity is thought to be mediated by PTK–substrate docking interactions and recognition of the phosphorylation site sequence by the kinase active site. However, a substrate-docking site has not been determined on any PTK. C-terminal Src kinase (Csk) is a PTK that specifically phosphorylates Src family kinases on a C-terminal Tyr. In this study, by sequence alignment and site-specific mutagenesis, we located a substrate-docking site on Csk. Mutations in the …

A Professionally Cautious King And Queen: Institutional Agendas & Interactional Footings In Discourse About September 11th, Allison Christian Jan 2003

A Professionally Cautious King And Queen: Institutional Agendas & Interactional Footings In Discourse About September 11th, Allison Christian

Iowa Journal of Communication

This paper analyzes a segment of institutional talk from a news interview between Larry King and Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan taken from "Larry King Live." The subject matter of the interview centers around the September 11th events and their impact on Americans' view of Islam. Utilizing Goffman's notions of 'footing' and 'impression management,' this paper examines how Queen Rania utilizes various identities, shifts in footing, and professional caution in the pursuit of a particular institutional agenda. This agenda can be seen as promoting a positive characterization for the Islamic religion. This analysis illustrates the way in which identities …

The Effect Of Life Stress And Coping Resources On The Occurrence And Severity Of Athletic Injuries In Female Collegiate Athletics, Susan E. Stoker Jan 2003

The Effect Of Life Stress And Coping Resources On The Occurrence And Severity Of Athletic Injuries In Female Collegiate Athletics, Susan E. Stoker

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was designed to investigate the effects of life stress and coping resources on the occurrence and severity of athletic injuries for female collegiate athletes. Subjects from the university's women's volleyball and soccer team were classified as either injured or non-injured, depending on whether injury occurred during the athletic season. A further separation of the injured players divided them according to the severity of their injuries (minor, significant, and major). The LESCA and Coping Resources section of the Stress Audit Questionnaire were used to test life stress and coping resources athletes have for dealing with stress. Psychometric data was …

The Effects Of The Breathe-Right Nasal Strip On Oronasal Maximum Voluntary Ventilation, Sean Michael Linck Jan 2003

The Effects Of The Breathe-Right Nasal Strip On Oronasal Maximum Voluntary Ventilation, Sean Michael Linck

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In recent years coaches and athletes have given attention to the Breathe-Right nasal strip (BRNS) to help improve breathing and possibly enhance exercise performance. The BRNS is placed on the outer nose and is supposed to lift and expand the flexible cartilage of the nasal valve and make it "easier to breathe." This study was conducted to determine whether the application of the BRNS will improve maximum voluntary ventilation (MVV) using both nasal and oral breathing ( oronasal breathing). An MVV test is often used to simulate breathing at peak exercise and is the best indicator of overall function of …

Collaboration Between Student Affairs And Academic Affairs At Liberal Arts Institutions, Jessica Lynn Moon Jan 2003

Collaboration Between Student Affairs And Academic Affairs At Liberal Arts Institutions, Jessica Lynn Moon

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examined the perceptions, attitudes, and practices of senior student affairs administrators and academic affairs administrators regarding collaborative work between their respective divisions. Through a survey adapted for this study, senior administrators at liberal arts institutions were asked to report their perceptions and opinions on the relationship between student affairs and academic affairs at their institution. They were also asked their perceptions of the need for collaborative relationships, the benefits of partnerships, occurrences of collaboration, and the perceived barriers to collaboration at their institutions. Seven scale composites were created to allow for a clear comparison of administrative responses on …

Factors Associated With The Decision Not To Become 7–12 Principals By Those Holding The License, Gail Moorman Behrens Jan 2003

Factors Associated With The Decision Not To Become 7–12 Principals By Those Holding The License, Gail Moorman Behrens

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to find out from educators who held the requisite credentials to be a secondary principal, but were not serving in that position, why fewer licensed educators are choosing to apply for secondary principal positions. This investigation was initiated because a shortage of qualified secondary principals in the state of Iowa had been indicated.

Four research questions were utilized with a quantitative research approach. A survey instrument was mailed to a sample of Iowa educators holding the Iowa 7-12 principal license but not serving 7-12 principal positions. The final sample included 131 responses which represented …

An Author Co-Citation Analysis Of Medical Informatics, James E. Andrews Jan 2003

An Author Co-Citation Analysis Of Medical Informatics, James E. Andrews

School of Information Faculty Publications

Objective: This study presents the results of an author co-citation analysis of the interdisciplinary field of medical informatics.

Methods: An author co-citation analysis was conducted for the years 1994 to 1998, using the fifty most-cited American College of Medical Informatics fellows as an author population. Co-citation data were calculated for every author pair, and multivariate analyses were performed to ultimately show the relationships among all authors. A multidimensional map was created, wherein each author is represented as a point, and the proximity of these points reflects the relationships of authors as perceived by multiple citers.

Results and Conclusion: The results …
