The Internet Direct Public Offering: Establishing Trust In A Disintermediated Capital Market, Jason Trainor Jan 2003

The Internet Direct Public Offering: Establishing Trust In A Disintermediated Capital Market, Jason Trainor

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

Whereas the process of financial intermediation was once human capital and relationship intensive, it is now heavily influenced by technological innovation and consumer demand, factors which have tended to disrupt the monopoly power of financial intermediaries. Technological innovation alone, however, is not sufficient to replace the institutions and actors that previously dominated the market for public offerings; rather, the concept of disintermediation by definition creates a vacuum that must be filled. Law firms and other intermediaries can create additional value for their clients by assuming some or all of the tasks currently apportioned to investment bankers in the public offering …

Efficiency And Social Citizenship: Challenging The Neoliberal Attack On The Welfare State, Martha T. Mccluskey Jan 2003

Efficiency And Social Citizenship: Challenging The Neoliberal Attack On The Welfare State, Martha T. Mccluskey

Journal Articles

In the face of rising economic inequality and shrinking welfare protections, some scholars recently have revived interest in T.H. Marshall's theory of "social citizenship." That theory places economic rights alongside political and civil rights as fundamental to public well-being. But this social citizenship ideal stands against the prevailing neoliberal ("free market") ideology, which asserts that state abstention from economic protection generates societal well-being. Using the examples of AFDC and workers' compensation in the 1990s, I analyze how arguments about economic efficiency have worked to characterize social welfare programs as producers of public vice rather than public virtue. A close examination …

Citizenship And Severity: Recent Immigration Reforms And The New Penology, Teresa A. Miller Jan 2003

Citizenship And Severity: Recent Immigration Reforms And The New Penology, Teresa A. Miller

Journal Articles

Over the past twenty years, scholars of criminal law, criminology and criminal punishment have documented a transformation in the practices, objectives, and institutional arrangements underlying a range of criminal justice system functions that are at the heart of penal modernism. In contrast to the preceding eighty years of criminal justice practices that were progressively more modern in their belief in the rationality of the criminal offender and their concern for enhancing civilization through rehabilitative responses to criminality, these scholars note that since the mid-198''0s the relatively settled assumptions about the framework that shaped criminal justice and penal practices for nearly …

Involving Engineering With In-Service K-4 Teachers, Theresa M. Swift, Steve Eugene Watkins, Kristine Swenson, Evalee Lasater, Robert Mitchell Jan 2003

Involving Engineering With In-Service K-4 Teachers, Theresa M. Swift, Steve Eugene Watkins, Kristine Swenson, Evalee Lasater, Robert Mitchell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A strong workforce in science and engineering and literate citizens in a technology-based society depends on an educational system that prepares students in science, mathematics, and engineering. Unfortunately, many K-12 students lose interest in such topics early in their school years. Engineering applications can capture the imagination of students and illustrate the concepts in science and mathematics. Level-appropriate resources are as necessary for primary teachers and our young scholars as for teachers and students in higher grades. A model for interaction between engineers and K-4 teachers is proposed. The State of Missouri defines curriculum standards in each subject area and …

Supporting Patriarchy And Consumerism Through Sex Rhetoric: Power, Foucault And Sex And The City, Alyson Chace Arnold Jan 2003

Supporting Patriarchy And Consumerism Through Sex Rhetoric: Power, Foucault And Sex And The City, Alyson Chace Arnold

Open Access Master's Theses

As Americans seek identification through the media, Foucault's "bio-power" extends the power of patriarchy and consumerism through gender prescriptions. A study of modern sexuality discourses can show what those prescriptions are and how the current power-knowledge regimes are maintained by them. This paper focuses on the aspects of Foucault's theories on power that deal with gender and sexuality discourses, explicating the cable show Sex and the City to discuss its role in the perpetuation of the status quo of patriarchy and consumerism through gendered identities. The paper also identifies aspects of the show that reveal a progressive pattern of resistance …

Coping With Human Immunodeficiency Disease As Predictor Of Adherence With Antiretroviral Medication, Saurabh Mistry Jan 2003

Coping With Human Immunodeficiency Disease As Predictor Of Adherence With Antiretroviral Medication, Saurabh Mistry

Open Access Master's Theses

Infection by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a multifactor disease process in which the patient must confront an array of physiological, sociocultural, economic, and psychological stressors that have the collective potential for triggering major stress responses and psychological dysfunction. People's reactions to and the outcomes of traumatic events are mediated by their subjective style of coping. Coping is defined as a person's "constantly changing cognitive and behavioral efforts to manage specific external and internal demands that are appraised as taxing or exceeding the resources of a person". Coping, an important psychological construct has been shown to affect outcomes such as …

The South Providence Kosher Meat Boycott Of 1910: A Study Of Jewish Women’S Consumer Activism, Kimberly Susan Nusco Jan 2003

The South Providence Kosher Meat Boycott Of 1910: A Study Of Jewish Women’S Consumer Activism, Kimberly Susan Nusco

Open Access Master's Theses

This thesis examines a kosher meat boycott in South Providence in 1910, placing this event in the broader context of Jewish immigrant women's activism around food issues and the popular strategy of consumer protest during the Progressive Era. Through an analysis of press accounts, census data, and community statistics, this study presents an analysis of the possible causes and impacts of this example of immigrant Jewish women's activism in early twentieth-century Providence.

As women serve as both preservers of culture and mediators of the outside world (as expressed through domestic consumption), such incidents as kosher meat boycotts provide an opportune …

Stories Of Mothers Of Medically Vulnerable Infants, Sarah E. Davis Jan 2003

Stories Of Mothers Of Medically Vulnerable Infants, Sarah E. Davis

Master's Projects

As with any new baby, a medically vulnerable infant must be incorporated into the life of the family. The work of this transition is principally the work of the mother as primary caretaker. The mother considers what it will mean to have this infant in the family, how he will fit in, and what things will change. The mother wonders about how his personality will unfold and what his future will bring. She thinks about her role as a mother and how to best meet her child's special needs. With a medically vulnerable infant, a mother also has to consider …

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of An Anaphylaxis Training Program For Unlicensed Assistive Personnel, Jean A. Litarowsky Jan 2003

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of An Anaphylaxis Training Program For Unlicensed Assistive Personnel, Jean A. Litarowsky

Master's Projects

This study evaluated a training program designed to prepare unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) in high school settings to recognize and respond effectively to an anaphylactic emergency. Subjects included 53 adults employed by a high school district in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. A training model was developed based on Bandura's theory of sources of self-efficacy. Knowledge and perceived self-efficacy of participants were measured before and after the training program to determine if a theory-based anaphylaxis recognition and epinephrine auto-injector training program would increase participants' knowledge and self-efficacy in responding to an anaphylactic emergency. Paired t-tests revealed significant improvement …

Best Practices In Implementing Operational Controls Of Iso 14001 Environmental Management Systems Into Small And Medium Businesses, Kuldeep Khalsa Jan 2003

Best Practices In Implementing Operational Controls Of Iso 14001 Environmental Management Systems Into Small And Medium Businesses, Kuldeep Khalsa

Theses

Studies show that many small and medium businesses (SMBs) that have implemented environmental management systems (EMSs) and got certified to the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard experienced obstacles along the way. For SMBs the standards appear unnecessarily bureaucratic, and represent a way of working that fits poorly into their organizational cultures and decision-making structures of small companies. Studies also show that environmental management systems such as ISO 14001 provide a framework for organizations that wish to effectively manage their environmental affairs. Implementing an EMS that conforms to the ISO 14001 standard helps businesses integrate environmental values into their operations.
