Best Practices For Integration Of Iso 14001 Environmental Management Systems Into Small To Medium Size Businesses, Najib Hakim
Best Practices For Integration Of Iso 14001 Environmental Management Systems Into Small To Medium Size Businesses, Najib Hakim
Theses
Small to Medium size Businesses (SMBs) are now confronted with a new challenge; "Would it be appropriate to implement and incorporate a strategic Environmental Management System (EMS) into their business?" SMBs have to live up to certain environmental responsibilities similar to large corporations. Major corporations are starting to favor suppliers that have a certified ISO 14001 environmental management system, so the question for many SMBs is, "Is it feasible to incorporate such a system?" Industries currently face a certain degree of challenge when it comes to the environment, environmental performance, and demands by society for cleaner, more efficient processes. In …
Workplace Violence Prevention And Systems Management, Megan Ahn
Workplace Violence Prevention And Systems Management, Megan Ahn
Theses
Violence in the workplace has become a major concern to labor, business, and government. In the past ten years, between 600 and 1000 work related deaths have been attributed to homicide. The repercussions of non-fatal aggression and violence in the workplace are not yet clear. What is clear is that all organizations are at some degree of risk and that regulatory and legal requirements dictate that preventive action be taken to protect employees, other stakeholders and the public from workplace violence. This thesis posits that by using a systems management approach along with the techniques of quality management, instances of …

Solid-Phase Combinatorial Synthesis: Wittig Reaction For C=C Formation In Tamoxifen Derivatives, David Yu-Chung Lee
Solid-Phase Combinatorial Synthesis: Wittig Reaction For C=C Formation In Tamoxifen Derivatives, David Yu-Chung Lee
Theses
Tamoxifen has a backbone structure of triphenylethylene and is a drug that has been used for over 20 years to treat patients with breast cancer. It has been discussed in the literature that the C=C formation would be the desired synthetic approach because of its flexibility in the introduction of suitable functional groups using readily available reagents. Solid-phase combinatorial approach is adopted for the purpose of product diversity and simplicity in product analysis. This research focused on optimization of each reaction step in the Wittig mechanism to overcome low yield caused by employing solid-state chemistry and the steric hindrance of …

Character Education Program : An Evaluation Description, Hou Chun Kuong
Graduate Research Papers
In today 's world, all children face great uncertainties in a complex and sometimes troubled society. These traits are not always readily apparent and easy to grasp or learn. Today, schools face the challenge of providing youth with the self-esteem, stamina, and support they need to survive, be successful, and develop into strong, competent, caring, and responsible citizens. To meet the challenge schools have either developed or adopted character education programs.
This paper focused on three elements common to most character education programs: (]) the school program must include parent and community outreach, planning and structure, school climate, curriculum, and …

Orchestrating A Student's Reading Fluency In The Elementary Classroom, Sarah A. Yoder
Orchestrating A Student's Reading Fluency In The Elementary Classroom, Sarah A. Yoder
Graduate Research Papers
As you listen to a piece of music, you hear the sound of instruments blending together to create a harmonious sound, to create a mood, or tell a story. With that same sense of coordination and ease a successful, fluent reader quietly orchestrates his/her reading to derive meaning from a text. It is common for teachers to have the goal of developing fluent, young readers in the elementary classroom, but it is often unclear how to go about obtaining this goal. This article is written for elementary teachers who want to foster fluent reading, but are unsure how to direct …

Active Learning Techniques To Teach Spanish Vocabulary, Sara E. Janssen
Graduate Research Papers
The journal article, "Pictures, John Travolta moves, and Sign Language: Active Learning Techniques to Teach Spanish Vocabulary," discusses the experiences 8th grade Spanish students had while using three instructional practices for learning vocabulary. Active learning strategies are a popular method for educators, especially those at the middle level. Educators can get their students active in learning by doing many different things. Pictures, "silly signs," and sign language were used to engage my students in learning fourteen Spanish vocabulary words.
Three groups of Spanish exploratory classes were the subjects in this study. Each of the three groups received instruction using one …

An Introduction To Genetically Modified Foods, Kathleen Hart
An Introduction To Genetically Modified Foods, Kathleen Hart
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
Thank you. I have been visiting a lot of bookstores since Eating in the Dark came out last year, including a wonderful bookstore, I should mention, which is right here in Richmond called the Fountain Bookstore. People often ask me if I’ve changed my diet as a result of what I learned while researching the book. Mainly, have I stopped eating genetically engineered foods? I always answer that I’m an American, so of course I eat genetically engineered foods because we have no choice in the matter. GM foods are ubiquitous in the processed foods, and they’re not labeled. But …

Regulating Genetically Modified Foods: Is Mandatory Labeling The Right Answer?, Jean Halloran
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
hank you. Consumer Union, which is the organization that I work for, favors labeling genetically engineered food. At the base of our view on this issue is the view that genetically engineered food is different than regular food. I know some of our previous speakers have spoken about how this is all just one big continuum from conventional crops, but when you look at spider- silk goats, which are goats genetically engineered to produce spider silk in their milk that do in fact exist already on a test farm, the ordinary persons sees something different. To the ordinary person, a …

Remarks On Regulating Genetically Modified Foods In The United States, David Hegewood
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
I would like to thank the Richmond Journal of Law & Technology for inviting me this afternoon and for organizing this forum. I’ve never been on Crossfire, and it’s easy to see why Val has, so I probably won’t be quite as entertaining. In fact most of what I wanted to say this afternoon has already been said in one form or another. Val just stole the last one with the Watson and Crick Fiftieth Anniversary. What I want to do is maybe give you more of a sense of perspective and then go over some of the facts.

Design-Build Method Viewed By Public Agencies In Southern Nevada Compared To Arizona And Utah, Jose W Oliveira
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Area is the fastest growing large urban area in the United States. Between 1990 and 2000, the population expanded 83.3 percent. To meet the growing population in the Las Vegas Valley, local agencies struggle to construct public facilities such as community centers, schools, municipal buildings and transportation facilities. The most common construction contracting method being used by local agencies consists of local municipalities hiring a design professional, usually an architect or engineer, under one contract, and then bidding the construction services out to a general contractor; An innovative form of construction contracting now exist, where only …
Effects Of Blood Vessel Permeability On Mechanical Properties Of Bone Under Micro-Gravity Conditions, Robert L Drollinger
Effects Of Blood Vessel Permeability On Mechanical Properties Of Bone Under Micro-Gravity Conditions, Robert L Drollinger
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Loss of bone mass is one important physiological change observed in astronauts after medium and long-term exposure to microgravity conditions. The objective of the current study is to test the hypothesis that loss of bone mass under microgravity can be inhibited if the same micro-force distribution under earth gravity (body weight) is achieved by increasing the blood vessel permeability to increase the transcortical interstitial fluid flow. A method of exposure to bio-frequency spectrum (BFS) light (infrared to micrometer wavelength) was used to increase the blood vessel permeability. We tested the hypothesis by examining the bone mechanical properties (Young's modulus) of …
Gender Differences In Predictors Of Filipino Out-Marriage, Bryan Jonathan James
Gender Differences In Predictors Of Filipino Out-Marriage, Bryan Jonathan James
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Previous research demonstrates that Filipinas have higher rates of out-marriage to whites than Filipinos. This thesis asks, what factors explain this gender difference in Filipino/as' out-marriage patterns? Using a sample of Filipino/as married to whites, I examine gender differences in rates of out-marriage, employ logistic regression to predict the likelihood of out-marriage, and test for gender differences in the effects of independent variables. Bivariate results demonstrate a small, but significant gender difference in out-marriage. Results show that when controlling for all variables, there is no gender difference in the likelihood of out-marriage. However, the effects of spouse's citizenship and spouse's …
