The Glass Ceiling For Women In Business, Megan Abels Jan 2003

The Glass Ceiling For Women In Business, Megan Abels

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

What better inspiration for research on the glass ceiling than the words of such influential women. As a young woman who will soon graduate college and enter the business world, in a field still dominated by men, the glass ceiling was a natural choice for my Presidential Scholar's research. When I first heard mention of the topic, it sounded like an age-old concept; one that was no longer in the public perception for the simple fact that it no longer existed. All my life, I have been led to believe that as a woman I can do anything, and that …

Creating Chaos: Us' Policies In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Kelly Shell Jan 2003

Creating Chaos: Us' Policies In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Kelly Shell

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Since 1885, when the United States' government became the first to officially recognize King Leopold's claim to the Congo, the United States has continuously undermined the democratic attempts and economic prosperity of the Congolese population. Throughout the DRC's political history the United States has successfully used covert operations under the guise of the United Nations, clandestine CIA maneuvers, and/or the pretense of humanitarian relief to control American interests in the Great Lakes Region. Although other western nations have used their own means to advance their interests in the Congo, this paper will focus on the US' role in the Congo. …

Plagiarism, Melissa Cast-Brede Jan 2003

Plagiarism, Melissa Cast-Brede

Criss Library Faculty Publications

The news media today is filled with articles on plagiarism. Well known figures such as Stephen Ambrose and Doris Kearns Goodwin parade across our newspapers charged with plagiarizing. Studies from around the country show a high number of high school and college students admitting to using others' works as their own. It's fairly clear that more should be done to prevent plagiarism. In reviewing the literature, prevention of plagiarism involves three issues: understanding why it happens, detecting it and structuring assignments to prevent it.

Thinking Globally, Acting Locally: Documenting Environmental Activism In New York State, Brian Keough, Amy Schindler

Criss Library Faculty Publications

A significant component of the political history of New York and other states in the second half of the twentieth century is the extraordinary growth of a social movement directed at environmental issues. The authors completed a case study of a documentation project to collect archival records about the history of environmental affairs in New York State. This article critically examines documentation strategy and the evolution of statewide documentation projects in New York, describes the implementation of a documentation project for environmental affairs, and suggests methods for improving the identification and selection of records of enduring value. The project set …

Self-Perceptions Of Speech Language Pathologists-In-Training Before And After Pseudostuttering Experiences On The Telephone, Manish Rami, Joseph Kalinowski, Andrew Stuart, Michael P. Rastatter Jan 2003

Self-Perceptions Of Speech Language Pathologists-In-Training Before And After Pseudostuttering Experiences On The Telephone, Manish Rami, Joseph Kalinowski, Andrew Stuart, Michael P. Rastatter

Communication Sciences & Disorders Faculty Publications

Purpose: This survey investigated the effect of pseudostuttering experiences on self-perceptions of 29 female, graduate students enrolled in a graduate seminar in stuttering.

Method: Perceptions of self prior to, and immediately after, participation in five scripted telephone calls which contained pseudostuttering were measured via a 25-item semantic differential scale.

Results: Data showed that the participants perceived themselves as significantly more (p < 0.002) withdrawn, tense, avoiding, afraid, introverted, nervous, self-conscious, anxious, quiet, inflexible, hesitant, dull, passive, unpleasant, insecure, unfriendly, guarded, and reticent. after their pseudostuttering telephone call experiences.

Conclusions: Findings suggests that the ‘pseudostuttering’ experiences have an impact on self-perceptions and that the experience of ‘adopting the disability of a person who stutter’s’ may provide insight as to the social and emotional impact of communicative failure. …

Cross-Employee Redistribution Effects Of Mandated Employee Benefits, Sharon Rabin-Margalioth Jan 2003

Cross-Employee Redistribution Effects Of Mandated Employee Benefits, Sharon Rabin-Margalioth

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

Whether mandated employee benefit policies are efficient, depends on the ratio of aggregate value attached by employees to the benefit, compared to the aggregate employer cost of providing the benefit. The higher the aggregate value/cost ratio is, the stronger is the justification for implementing the policy. High value/cost ratios are indicative of the existence of market failures in the voluntary provision of the benefit. Mandated benefits, efficient or not, do not entail employer-employee redistributive outcomes. The fact that no employment rate changes can be traced following the enforcement of a mandate program is usually indicative of full employer cost shifting. …

The Potential For State Labor Law: The New York Greengrocer Code Of Conduct, Matthew T. Bodie Jan 2003

The Potential For State Labor Law: The New York Greengrocer Code Of Conduct, Matthew T. Bodie

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

While labor law academics bemoan the ossification of federal labor law, the potential for state labor law has just begun to be explored. This Article takes a closer look at the New York Greengrocer Code of Conduct, a unique approach to the problem of industry-wide employment law violations. The Code, negotiated by the New York Attorney General's Office in conjunction with groups representing workers and greengrocers, provides a set of minimum terms and conditions for grocers which to some extent go beyond statutory requirements. In return for agreeing to the Code, grocers can avoid liability for past state employment law …

I Yelled At My Mother: Narrative Introspection Into The Multifaceted Emotions Of Sympathy & Compassion In Care-Giving, Elizabeth A. Curry Jan 2003

I Yelled At My Mother: Narrative Introspection Into The Multifaceted Emotions Of Sympathy & Compassion In Care-Giving, Elizabeth A. Curry

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

Sympathy, empathy and compassion have been widely studied in many different disciplines but there has been little agreement among researchers. Studies often address the process of giving sympathy but little has been done with the process of receiving sympathy or the complex intersection of the two. This paper is an autoethnography that explores the relational way we develop an understanding of sympathy and compassion. I use an introspective process to study how I have come to understand compassion and sympathy in care giving for my mother. I seek a different approach to compassion and sympathy as a social process of …

Longevity Studies Of Sindbis Virus Infected Aedes Albopictus, Jonida Kosova Jan 2003

Longevity Studies Of Sindbis Virus Infected Aedes Albopictus, Jonida Kosova

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The persistent captive life cycle of a virus infected mosquito was examined. The model system used was Aedes albopictus and the Alphavirus, Sindbis virus. The adult life span of virus infected Ae. albopictus was compared to the life span of virus free Ae. albopictus. Intrathoracic inoculation was the method used to infect the experimental group of the adult female Ae. albopictus with Sindbis virus. This experimental data demonstrates that this virus does not hamper the mosquito life span. The results from this experiment can be used in future experiments, such as examining the immune system of the mosquito and its …

Self-Esteem, Sex Differences, And Self-Disclosure: A Study Of The Closeness Of Relationships, Christien Marie Seamon Jan 2003

Self-Esteem, Sex Differences, And Self-Disclosure: A Study Of The Closeness Of Relationships, Christien Marie Seamon

All Volumes (2001-2008)

It was hypothesized that self-esteem, sex, and relationship closeness would affect self-disclosure. Participants imagined either a best friend or a casual acquaintance while completing a modified version of the Marital Self-Disclosure Questionnaire (MSDQ; Waring, Holden, & Wesley, 1998). The MSDQ measured four facets of self-disclosure: relationship, sex, money, and imbalance. Self-esteem was assessed using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (1965). In general, self-disclosure was greater for females than for males and in close relationships than in distant relationships. There were no differences in self-disclosure between high and low self-esteem individuals. In close relationships, females disclosed more than did males; in distant …

Prejudicial Attitudes Toward Homosexuals As A Function Of Religious Orientation, Jacqueline E. Mandra Jan 2003

Prejudicial Attitudes Toward Homosexuals As A Function Of Religious Orientation, Jacqueline E. Mandra

All Volumes (2001-2008)

This study investigated prejudicial attitudes toward homosexuals as a function of individuals' religious affiliation and orientation. It was predicted that intrinsically oriented individuals would be more prejudiced toward homosexuals than would extrinsically oriented individuals. This trend was expected more for Catholics than for Protestants. Students answered several questionnaires about their attitudes toward homosexuals and their religious beliefs. Although intrinsically oriented individuals were more prejudiced toward homosexuals than were extrinsically oriented individuals, this trend was stronger for Protestants than for Catholics. Understanding how prejudicial attitudes against homosexuals are formed may help to eliminate discrimination toward this group.

Phylogenetic Analysis Of Borrelia Species Detected In Small Mammals And Ticks In Florida, Karen Overly Jan 2003

Phylogenetic Analysis Of Borrelia Species Detected In Small Mammals And Ticks In Florida, Karen Overly

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The infection prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi, the etiological agent of Lyme disease, was estimated among small mammals and ticks at two sites in northern Florida using molecular methods. Analysis of the B. burgdorferi flagellin gene in samples extracted from the ticks and small mammals was used to construct a phylogenetic tree. The phylogenetic tree was used to compare partial flagellin gene sequences of the Borrelia strains from Florida with reference Borrelia strains. The infection prevalences of small mammals at the University of North Florida and Guana River State Park were 90% and 47%, respectively, with 6 of 7 small …

Liquid Avonex® (Interferon beta-1 a) manufactured by Biogen, Inc. is indicated for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) to slow the accumulation of physical disability and decrease the frequency of clinical exacerbations. The recommended dosage of A vonex® for the treatment of relapsing forms of MS is 30 μg injected intramuscularly once a week. Several complications have been reported following intramuscular (IM) injections, of which pain at the injection site is the most common. Though factors such as site of injection, injection volume, concentration and nature of the drug may affect the reception of pain, one factor …

Remote Sensing And Landscape Analysis Of Indicators Of Estuarine Condition In The Northeastern United States, Wilfrid Rodriguez Jan 2003

Remote Sensing And Landscape Analysis Of Indicators Of Estuarine Condition In The Northeastern United States, Wilfrid Rodriguez

Open Access Dissertations

I focused on four questions: (1) are measures of estuarine water quality the same across study regions; (2) are spatial setting variables and intense rainfall events important in explaining variation in water quality measures; (3) what is the relationship between patterns of land cover and estuarine condition; and (4) is land-cover change a good regional indicator of estuarine condition? Estuarine data was extracted from the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP) and Coastal-2000 surveys. Geographical Information System's modeling, land cover change detection, cumulative distribution functions and multiple linear regression analyses were used to quantify land-water interactions in three regions representing …

Ferulic Acid And Peroxidase Infusion Into Disparate Vegetables And Its Effect On Texture, Karen Rose Conca Jan 2003

Ferulic Acid And Peroxidase Infusion Into Disparate Vegetables And Its Effect On Texture, Karen Rose Conca

Open Access Dissertations

The texture quality of canned fruits and vegetables can be severely degraded or softened due to thermal processing. Increased ferulic acid cross-linking and cell-cell adhesion has been associated with increased firmness of texture in fruits and vegetables. In order to test such a theory for maintaining firmness and cross-linkages of ferulic acid after thermal processing, vegetables were pre-treated/infused with peroxidase enzyme and ferulic acid. Carrots, beets and Chinese water chestnuts were chosen for their extreme differences in texture. Various methods for measuring texture were tested. Flat head compression was selected as the most sensitive method of assessing texture. Various infusion …

The Role Of Meat, Poultry, And Fish Consumption In The Occurrence Of Rheumatoid And Other Forms Of Arthritis, Asnake Hailu Jan 2003

The Role Of Meat, Poultry, And Fish Consumption In The Occurrence Of Rheumatoid And Other Forms Of Arthritis, Asnake Hailu

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of arthritis or rheumatism are now the leading cause of disability in the United States. The etiology and pathogenesis are less understood and available treatment options are not always satisfactory. This dissertation measures the prevalence and cumulative incidence of rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of arthritis or rheumatism, and examines any associations with current and lifetime consumption of meat, poultry, and fish (meat) using the Adventist Health Study and the Adventist Mortality Study databases. From these databases, it was possible to reconstruct a prospective cohort, obtain self-reported information on demographic characteristics, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, other …
