A Contrast-Based Neural Control System For Ant Navigation, Joanna R. Wares, Predrag-Peter Ilich, Daniel P. Dougherty Jan 2003

A Contrast-Based Neural Control System For Ant Navigation, Joanna R. Wares, Predrag-Peter Ilich, Daniel P. Dougherty

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

A mathematical model for a neural control system of ant locomotion was developed. Contrast-based detectors using excitation and inhibition were tuned to specific contrast orientations. A control system using multiple orientation contrast detectors was then developed and optimized for a model ant, which could move via a biased random walk. The system allowed sufficient control to guide the ant through various mazes.

Protecting Children From Pornography On The Internet: Freedom Of Speech Is Pitching And Congress May Strike Out, Dawn S. Conrad

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

The Internet provides the First Amendment’s “freedom of speech” with a world of opportunity. Any person with access to the Internet may take advantage of a wide variety of information and communication methods. This unique medium, known to its users as cyberspace, is located in no particular geographical location and has no centralized control point, but is available to anyone, anywhere in the world with access." In the past twenty years, the Internet, a network of connected computers, has experienced extraordinary growth. The number of “host” computers, or those that store information and relay communications, increased between the years of …

The Academy Chokes On Food Biotech, Public Policy Suffocates, Henry I. Miller

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

The National Academy of Sciences, under its 1863 congressional charter, is supposed to be dedicated to “investigate, examine, experiment, and report upon any subject of science or art whenever called upon to do so by any department of the government.” At least insofar as judging the scienti c integrity of governmental regulation of biotechnology is concerned, however, two recent “expert” committees of the National Research Council (NRC), the research arm of the Academy, have been plagued by apparent bias, and their recommendations have been dubious.

Attacks on poorly-secured information systems containing personal information are nearing epidemic proportion. Hardly a month passes without a news story regarding a security breach that exposed hundreds or thousands of data subjects’ personal information. As dependence on e-Commerce continues to expand, personal information stolen from poorly secured systems is becoming a multi-billion-dollar industry.

Beliefs About The Appropriate Degree Of Directiveness In The Management Relationship, As Related To Demographic Characteristics, Educational Background, And Organizational Position, Janet L. Pershing

Harold L. Hodgkinson Award for Outstanding Dissertation

Correlations between beliefs about management and age, gender, nationality, level of education, education field, functional area, and hierarchical level were examined. Analyses were conducted at the ecological level and focused on beliefs regarding appropriate degree of directiveness in the managerial relationship. Two thousand staff members of an international intergovernmental organization received an electronically distributed written survey. Factor analysis was used to develop summated rating scales for each independent variables. Differences between subgroup means were then examined using ANOVA or t tests. The strength of the association between the independent variables and a common scale was assessed using eta squared. Directiveness …

Climatological Study Of Transport To The Pico-Nare Site Using Atmospheric Backward Trajectories, Robert Christopher Owen Jan 2003

Climatological Study Of Transport To The Pico-Nare Site Using Atmospheric Backward Trajectories, Robert Christopher Owen

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

This study developed a transport climatology to the PICO-NARE station, in the central North Atlantic Ocean, using a 40-year set of atmospheric back trajectories. The trajectory set was subjected to a cluster analysis in order to group trajectories into six flow patterns, or clusters. An air flow probability analysis was conducted in conjunction with the cluster analysis in order to determine the source regions for flow to the site. Seasonal differences in the flow patterns were found, which included enhanced westerly flow in the winter, decreased westerly flow in the summer, and spring and fall having moderate westerly flow. The …

Exclusion Of Terrorist-Related Harms From Insurance Coverage: Do The Costs Justify The Benefits, Jeffrey E. Thomas Jan 2003

Exclusion Of Terrorist-Related Harms From Insurance Coverage: Do The Costs Justify The Benefits, Jeffrey E. Thomas

Faculty Works

The September 11 attack was the largest single insured event in history. In the end, insurance companies are expected to pay approximately $50 billion to victims of the attack. In response to the perceived potential of future terrorist losses, many insurers have begun to exclude terrorist-related losses from their policies. In light of the size and uncertainty of future losses, this is understandable. In adopting this approach, however, it appears that little thought has been given to the transaction costs associated with the exclusion. One of the significant contributions of Law and Economics to legal literature has been to illuminate …

Breast Screening Outreach Education For Rural, Indigent Women, Stephanie Welch Rnc, Laurie Johnson Bsn, Holly Gore Bsn, Katie Cravey Bsn, Susan Blick Bsn

The Corinthian

Few research articles are available in the literature regarding the outcomes of interventions involving education about breast health in a health fair environment coupled with one-on-one teaching of the Mammacare, metl1od of breast examination. If women's compliance with breat self-examination could be increased and their perc_ eption about breast screening could be changed by such an interven? 0n, health care providers could have a valuable tool for reducing tl1e ll1cidence of breast cancer mortality in at-risk populations.

Nursing Home Tort Reform And Ohio House Bill 412: Why Have We Abandoned Our Neglected And Abused Elderly Population, Robin P. Bravchok Jan 2003

Nursing Home Tort Reform And Ohio House Bill 412: Why Have We Abandoned Our Neglected And Abused Elderly Population, Robin P. Bravchok

Cleveland State Law Review

This Note will show that nursing home tort reform statutes, like Ohio's, have totally missed the mark by disregarding our elders' rights and ignoring the problem of abuse and neglect in nursing facilities. Part II of this Note will look at our nation's elderly population and the poor state of our country's nursing homes. Part III will briefly look at Florida's lawsuit reform act that was passed in May of 2001. Florida, with its large elderly population, was plagued by increasing insurance costs allegedly due to rising litigation and damage awards. Its new law, which has led to strict reductions …

Beyond The Precautionary Principle, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2003

Beyond The Precautionary Principle, Cass R. Sunstein

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

The precautionary principle has been highly influential in legal systems all over the world. In its strongest and most distinctive forms, the principle imposes a burden of proof on those who create potential risks, and it requires regulation of activities even if it cannot be shown that those activities are likely to produce significant harms. Taken in this strong form, the precautionary principle should be rejected, not because it leads in bad directions, but because it leads in no directions at all. The principle is literally paralyzing— forbidding inaction, stringent regulation, and everything in between. The reason is that in …

The Analysis Of Partial Dominance Of Intragenic Mutations At The Adh Locus In Drosophila Melanogaster At Two Different Alcohol Concentrations, Vatan Taşkin Jan 2003

The Analysis Of Partial Dominance Of Intragenic Mutations At The Adh Locus In Drosophila Melanogaster At Two Different Alcohol Concentrations, Vatan Taşkin

Turkish Journal of Biology

The dominance of a de novo mutation determines its effect on the viability of the first and succeeding generations; therefore, it is a major factor in estimating the risk from mutations to human health. It is well established that large deletions lead to significant dominance, but until the recent development of molecular methods for amplification and sequencing of mutations it was not possible to determine the dominance of specific intragenic changes in DNA. The purpose of this study was to determine the dominance for a series of Adh-null mutations, each with a minimum mutation of a transition at one base …

The Glass Ceiling For Women In Business, Megan Abels Jan 2003

The Glass Ceiling For Women In Business, Megan Abels

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

What better inspiration for research on the glass ceiling than the words of such influential women. As a young woman who will soon graduate college and enter the business world, in a field still dominated by men, the glass ceiling was a natural choice for my Presidential Scholar's research. When I first heard mention of the topic, it sounded like an age-old concept; one that was no longer in the public perception for the simple fact that it no longer existed. All my life, I have been led to believe that as a woman I can do anything, and that …

Creating Chaos: Us' Policies In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Kelly Shell Jan 2003

Creating Chaos: Us' Policies In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Kelly Shell

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Since 1885, when the United States' government became the first to officially recognize King Leopold's claim to the Congo, the United States has continuously undermined the democratic attempts and economic prosperity of the Congolese population. Throughout the DRC's political history the United States has successfully used covert operations under the guise of the United Nations, clandestine CIA maneuvers, and/or the pretense of humanitarian relief to control American interests in the Great Lakes Region. Although other western nations have used their own means to advance their interests in the Congo, this paper will focus on the US' role in the Congo. …

Plagiarism, Melissa Cast-Brede Jan 2003

Plagiarism, Melissa Cast-Brede

Criss Library Faculty Publications

The news media today is filled with articles on plagiarism. Well known figures such as Stephen Ambrose and Doris Kearns Goodwin parade across our newspapers charged with plagiarizing. Studies from around the country show a high number of high school and college students admitting to using others' works as their own. It's fairly clear that more should be done to prevent plagiarism. In reviewing the literature, prevention of plagiarism involves three issues: understanding why it happens, detecting it and structuring assignments to prevent it.

Thinking Globally, Acting Locally: Documenting Environmental Activism In New York State, Brian Keough, Amy Schindler

Criss Library Faculty Publications

A significant component of the political history of New York and other states in the second half of the twentieth century is the extraordinary growth of a social movement directed at environmental issues. The authors completed a case study of a documentation project to collect archival records about the history of environmental affairs in New York State. This article critically examines documentation strategy and the evolution of statewide documentation projects in New York, describes the implementation of a documentation project for environmental affairs, and suggests methods for improving the identification and selection of records of enduring value. The project set …
