School -To -Home Communication In High School: Effects On Task Engagement And Homework Completion, Daniel Mcdonnell

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

This quasi-experimental study examined the effects of consistent school-to-home communication on homework completion, project completion, grades, attendance, student engagement, student behavior, and student attitude toward homework. Three high school English composition teachers reported data from a sample of 121 sophomores, who completed a pre- and post-survey, the Student Survey of Homework Practices. Each teacher taught a control and treatment class in which communication with the home was increased through phone calls home and weekly notes sent home with students. The post-test analyses by group found that students in the treatment group significantly decreased the amount of homework planning they did. …

Midazolam And Thiopentone Co-Induction: Looking For Improvement In Quality Of Anaesthesia, M A. Khan, F A. Khan

Department of Anaesthesia

Objective: To evaluate improvement in quality of anaesthesia induction using thiopentone and midazolam for co-induction of anaesthesia. An additional end point was taken as loss of response to a tetanic stimulation (50 Hz) delivered for 5 seconds after the loss of verbal contact and eyelash reflex. Methods: Ninety ASA I and II patients, within the age range of 20-60 years were studied. Patients were randomly divided into three equal groups; A, B and group C.Results: Onset of induction and loss of response to a tetanic stimulation was achieved earlier in group B as compared to the other study groups (p < 0.05).CONCLUSION: Co-induction with midazolam 0.02 mg x kg(-1) followed by thiopentone 3 mg x kg(-1) was superior to other two groups. Induction of anaesthesia in this group was found to be smoother and faster, provided better hemodynamic stability, better airway maintenance and with lesser incidence of untoward effects.

“Vacation” At Sea: Judicial Remedies And Equitable Discretion In Administrative Law, Ronald M. Levin Nov 2003

“Vacation” At Sea: Judicial Remedies And Equitable Discretion In Administrative Law, Ronald M. Levin

Duke Law Journal

Scholars have rarely examined the remedial issues that federal courts may face when they find that an administrative agency has acted unlawfully. This Article presents a broad survey of that topic in the course of exploring a narrower doctrinal issue: the validity of "remand without vacation." That term denotes a practice whereby a court remands an agency action for further work but allows the action to remain in place during the remand proceedings. In recent years many appellate panels have resorted to this practice in order to minimize disruption of an ongoing administrative program or to protect private reliance interests. …

Lentiviruses exist in vivo as a population of related, nonidentical genotypes, commonly referred to as quasispecies. The quasispecies structure is characteristic of complex adaptive systems and contributes to the high rate of evolution in lentiviruses that confounds efforts to develop effective vaccines and antiviral therapies. Here, we describe analyses of genetic data from longitudinal studies of genetic variation in a lentivirus regulatory protein, Rev, over the course of disease in ponies experimentally infected with equine infectious anemia virus. As observed with other lentivirus data, the Rev variants exhibited a quasispecies character. Phylogenetic and partition analyses suggested that the Rev quasispecies …

Meeting Cereal Demand While Protecting Natural Resources And Improving Environmental Quality, Kenneth G. Cassman, Achim R. Dobermann, Daniel T. Walters, Haishun Yang

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Agriculture is a resource-intensive enterprise. The manner in which food production systems utilize resources has a large influence on environmental quality. To evaluate prospects for conserving natural resources while meeting increased demand for cereals, we interpret recent trends and future trajectories in crop yields, land and nitrogen fertilizer use, carbon sequestration, and greenhouse gas emissions to identify key issues and challenges. Based on this assessment, we conclude that avoiding expansion of cultivation into natural ecosystems, increased nitrogen use efficiency, and improved soil quality are pivotal components of a sustainable agriculture that meets human needs and protects natural resources. To achieve …

Presentation Of Allergen In Different Food Preparations Affects The Nature Of The Allergic Reaction: A Case Series, K. E. C. Grimshaw, R. M. King, Julie A. Nordlee, S. L. Hefle, John O. Warner, J. O.'B. Hourihane

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Background: Characterization of fatal and nonfatal reactions to food indicates that the majority of reactions are due to the ingestion of prepared foods rather than the nonprocessed allergen. In an ongoing study that used a double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge to investigate peanut allergy and clinical symptoms, the observed reaction severity in four of the first six subjects was greater than anticipated. We hypothesized that this was due to differences in the composition of the challenge vehicle.

Objective: The aim was to investigate whether the severity of observed challenge reactions would be repeated on rechallenge with a lower fat …
