Frustrated Fertility: Infertility And Psychological Distress Among Women, Julia Mcquillan, Arthur L. Greil, Lynn K. White, Mary Casey Jacob Nov 2003

Frustrated Fertility: Infertility And Psychological Distress Among Women, Julia Mcquillan, Arthur L. Greil, Lynn K. White, Mary Casey Jacob

Bureau of Sociological Research: Faculty Publications

Using a random sample of 580 Midwestern women, we test the hypothesis that women who have experienced infertility report higher psychological distress. Approximately one third of our sample reports having experienced infertility sometime in their lives, although the majority of the infertile now have biological children. Drawing hypotheses from identity and stress theories, we examine whether roles or resources condition the effects of infertility or whether its effects are limited to childless women. Infertility combined with involuntary childlessness (including biological and social) is associated with significantly greater distress. For women in this category, the risk of distress is substantial.

Fum9 Is Required For C-5 Hydroxylation Of Fumonisins And Complements The Meitotically Defined Fum3 Locus In Gibberella Moniliformis, Robert A. E. Butchko, Ronald D. Plattner, Robert H. Proctor Nov 2003

Fum9 Is Required For C-5 Hydroxylation Of Fumonisins And Complements The Meitotically Defined Fum3 Locus In Gibberella Moniliformis, Robert A. E. Butchko, Ronald D. Plattner, Robert H. Proctor

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Deletion of the Gibberella moniliformis FUM9 gene resulted in mutants that produce only fumonisins that lack a C-5 hydroxyl group. This phenotype is identical to that of previously described mutants with defective alleles at the meiotically defined Fum3 locus. Transformation with a wild-type FUM9 gene into a Fum3- defective mutant restored wild-type fumonisin production. These results indicate that the FUM9 protein catalyzes the C-5 hydroxylation of fumonisins and that FUM9 and the Fum3 locus are the same gene.

Students' Self-Reported Preferences For Print And Online Newspapers, Kristin Williams Nov 2003

Students' Self-Reported Preferences For Print And Online Newspapers, Kristin Williams

Theses

The present study investigated the self-reported print and online newspaper reading habits of students at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). . A survey was distributed to a convenience sampling of 87 students in August 2003. Respondents were asked to self-report their ideas, attitudes and opinions about and towards online and printed news. . The results support previous research, including a 1999 study at RIT as well as those conducted at Pennsylvania State University and by the Pew Research Center, which revealed that college students were not reading newspapers with any regularity, but still thought that keeping up with news was …

Twixt, Karen Schlesinger Nov 2003

Twixt, Karen Schlesinger

Theses

This thesis discusses photographs exhibited at the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences Gallery at Rochester Institute of Technology from April 28 - May 10, 2003. In these photographs of desecrated landscapes at liminal times of day, the eerie light and vibrant colors of dusk and dawn enable me to create views of my personal world, a foreign and perilous place for some audiences, an intoxicating and disquieting environment for others. As the light gives way to darkness, the deepening shadows of the vegetation come alive as monstrous figures. Fears lurk in the darkness and become threatening creatures of the …

Comparative Pathogenicity Of Escherichia Coli O157 And Intimin-Negative Non-O157 Shiga Toxin-Producing E. Coli Strains In Neonatal Pigs, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, Angela R. Melton-Celsa, Joachim F. L. Pohlenz, Harley W. Moon, Alison D. O’Brien Nov 2003

Comparative Pathogenicity Of Escherichia Coli O157 And Intimin-Negative Non-O157 Shiga Toxin-Producing E. Coli Strains In Neonatal Pigs, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, Angela R. Melton-Celsa, Joachim F. L. Pohlenz, Harley W. Moon, Alison D. O’Brien

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

We compared the pathogenicity of intimin-negative non-O157:H7 Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O91:H21 and O104:H21 strains with the pathogenicity of intimin-positive O157:H7 and O157:H- strains in neonatal pigs. We also examined the role of Stx2d-activatable genes and the large hemolysinencoding plasmid of O91:H21 strain B2F1 in the pathogenesis of STEC disease in pigs. We found that all E. coli strains that made wild-type levels of Stx caused systemic illness and histological lesions in the brain and intestinal crypts, whereas none of the control Stx-negative E. coli strains evoked comparable central nervous system signs or intestinal lesions. By contrast, …

Sublime Hunger: A Consideration Of Eating Disorders Beyond Beauty, Sheila Lintott Nov 2003

Sublime Hunger: A Consideration Of Eating Disorders Beyond Beauty, Sheila Lintott

Faculty Journal Articles

n this paper, I argue that one of the most intense ways women are encouraged to enjoy sublime experiences is via attempts to control their bodies through excessive dieting. If this is so, then the societal-cultural contributions to the problem of eating disorders exceed the perpetuation of a certain beauty ideal to include the almost universal encouragement women receive to diet, coupled with the relative shortage of opportunities women are afforded to experience the sublime.

Aa Flexible And Scalable Authentication Scheme For Jpeg 2000 Image Codestreams, Cheng Peng, Robert H. Deng, Yongdong Wu, Weizhong Shao Nov 2003

Aa Flexible And Scalable Authentication Scheme For Jpeg 2000 Image Codestreams, Cheng Peng, Robert H. Deng, Yongdong Wu, Weizhong Shao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

JPEG2000 is an emerging standard for still image compression and is becoming the solution of choice for many digital imaging fields and applications. An important aspect of JPEG2000 is its "compress once, decompress many ways" property [1], i. e., it allows extraction of various sub-images (e.g., images with various resolutions, pixel fidelities, tiles and components) all from a single compressed image codestream. In this paper, we present a flexible and scalable authentication scheme for JPEG2000 images based on the Merkle hash tree and digital signature. Our scheme is fully compatible with JPEG2000 and possesses a "sign once, verify many ways" …

Issue Definition And The Opinion-Policy Link: Public Preferences And Health Care Spending In The Us And Uk, Stuart N. Soroka, Elvin T. Lim Nov 2003

Issue Definition And The Opinion-Policy Link: Public Preferences And Health Care Spending In The Us And Uk, Stuart N. Soroka, Elvin T. Lim

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article explores the extent to which yearly changes in health spending reflect yearly changes in public preferences. Time series modelling suggests that health care spending is remarkably more responsive to yearly changes in public opinion in the US than in the UK.A content analysis of party manifestos suggests the significant role of ‘issue definition’ in accounting for this difference. Health care issues in the US have more often been viewed as problems of expenditure, while UK policy-makers have tended to focus on efficiency. Results suggest that the responsiveness of health care expenditures to public preferences in the US and …

The Situation: An Introduction To The Situational Character, Critical Realism, Power Economics, And Deep Capture, Jon Hanson, David Yosifon Nov 2003

The Situation: An Introduction To The Situational Character, Critical Realism, Power Economics, And Deep Capture, Jon Hanson, David Yosifon

Faculty Publications

Throughout most of this introductory Article, we will focus our arguments primarily on economics and law and economics. We believe, however, that the implications of our inquiry extend far beyond those domains. The tendencies we hope to elucidate find their origins in the human animal, not in any particular legal theoretic perspective. It happens that these tendencies are especially prominent in law and economics, currently the dominant theoretical paradigm for creating and analyzing legal policy. But the relevance of our thesis is not confined to one approach , or even to legal-political questions. All humans are more or less implicated, …

Kalman Filtering For Fuzzy Discrete Time Dynamic Systems, Daniel J. Simon Nov 2003

Kalman Filtering For Fuzzy Discrete Time Dynamic Systems, Daniel J. Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper uses Kalman filter theory to design a state estimator for noisy discrete time Takagi–Sugeno (T–S) fuzzy models. One local filter is designed for each local linear model using standard Kalman filter theory. Steady state solutions can be found for each of the local filters. Then a linear combination of the local filters is used to derive a global filter. The local filters are time-invariant, which greatly reduces the computational complexity of the global filter. The global filter is shown to be unbiased and (under certain conditions) stable. In addition, under the approximation of uncorrelatedness among the local models, …

Sec Enforcement Heuristics: An Empirical Inquiry, Randall Thomas, James D. Cox Nov 2003

Sec Enforcement Heuristics: An Empirical Inquiry, Randall Thomas, James D. Cox

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This Article examines the overlap between SEC securities enforcement actions and private securities fraud class actions. We begin with an overview of data concerning all SEC enforcement actions from 1997 to 2002. We find that the volume of SEC enforcement proceedings is relatively modest. We next examine the scope of the recently enacted "Fair Fund" provision that authorizes the SEC to designate civil penalties it recovers from defendants to benefit defrauded private investors. We conclude that this provision offers only limited potential relief for private investors. We complete this Part of the Article with an analysis of the serious resource …

It's Time To Make The Administrative Procedure Act Administrative, Edward L. Rubin Nov 2003

It's Time To Make The Administrative Procedure Act Administrative, Edward L. Rubin

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The Administrative Procedure Act (APA) has been out of date from the day it was written because it fails to address the administrative character of the modern state. The APA imposes procedural requirements on agency rulemaking and adjudication, two activities that are singled out because they resemble legislation and judicial decision making in the premodern state. The requirements for adjudication are based on the procedural rules that govern courts; the requirements for rulemaking would be based on the procedural rules that govern legislatures, but because very few such rules exist, they are also based on the rules that govern courts. …

Prospect Theory, Risk Preference, And The Law, Chris Guthrie Nov 2003

Prospect Theory, Risk Preference, And The Law, Chris Guthrie

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

To understand how people behave in an uncertain world - and to make viable recommendations about how the law should try to shape that behavior - legal scholars must employ a model or theory of decision making. Only with an understanding of how people are likely to respond to legal rules can legal scholars, judges, legislators, and regulators craft rules that are likely to encourage desirable behavior and discourage undesirable behavior. Rather than rely on rational choice theory, behavioral law and economics scholars (or legal decision theorists) have turned to Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky's "prospect theory" to inform their …

2001 Michigan Hospital Cqi/Tqm Study, Colleen L. Croxall Nov 2003

2001 Michigan Hospital Cqi/Tqm Study, Colleen L. Croxall

Wayne State University Dissertations

In recent years, there has been significant interest in the application of total quality management/continuous quality improvement (TQM/CQI) within health care organizations. The health care industry, in its quest to improve outcomes with fewer resources, began to look at CQI/TQM as a possible solution. To date, the most comprehensive and enthusiastic response to efforts to improve quality while containing or lowering costs is reflected in hospitals' commitment to continuous quality improvement/total quality management (CQI/TQM). The health care industry, particularly hospitals, has embraced the concepts of CQI/TQM with the belief that adoption will lead to an improvement in both the quality …

Faculty Development For Teaching Online: Educational And Technological Issues, Anne M. Barker Nov 2003

Faculty Development For Teaching Online: Educational And Technological Issues, Anne M. Barker

Nursing Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to describe the process of creating a faculty development program for online instruction. Both educational and technological issues are discussed. Factors that will facilitate and barriers that will impede the implementation of online courses are included. Many faculty concerns regarding online courses relate to the issues of quality and student learning. Faculty development activities are directed to ensure that courses are developed using sound educational theory and principles. Online courses are first about student learning; using the technology is second. Thus, faculty development programs must be two-pronged, involving instructional design and technology. It is …

Newspaper Coverage Of Animal Abuse, Lara Jasmine Imbrock Nov 2003

Newspaper Coverage Of Animal Abuse, Lara Jasmine Imbrock

Student Work

The abuse of animals is an important social issue. Animals play a vital role in society, serving as companions and service animals for people. A qualitative content analysis was conducted to evaluate Midwest newspaper coverage of animal abuse in 1993, 1998, and 2002. The theories of social construction of reality, agenda setting, and priming were used to examine the effects of media coverage of animal abuse. Results showed that animal abuse has received increased coverage over the years.

The Effects Of Self-Efficacy And Locus Of Control On The Sexual Behaviors Of College Females, Michelle Noah Nov 2003

The Effects Of Self-Efficacy And Locus Of Control On The Sexual Behaviors Of College Females, Michelle Noah

Student Work

This research examined the relationship between self-efficacy, locus of control, and sexual behaviors among college females. The research null hypotheses suggest that; 1) There is no correlation between self-efficacy and responsible sexual behaviors, and 2) There is no correlation between locus of control and responsible sexual behaviors. Questionnaire data were collected from 109 undergraduate females at a Midwestern University. The sample was primarily Caucasian (89%), heterosexual (96.3%), and single (73.4%) with a mean age of 23 years. An investigator designed questionnaire, adapted in part, from the Rotter Internal-External Locus of Control Scale (RIELC), The General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE), and a …

Tobacco use in the U.S. is the cause of approximately 440,000 deaths annually and is the leading preventable cause of death. Smoking can result in death due to cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, and stroke. Smoking can also result in death due to cancers such as lung cancer, respiratory diseases such as pneumonia and bronchitis, and other deaths including diseases among infants and bum deaths (American Cancer Society, 2003). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that due to smoking, the cost of medical care and lost productivity added up to approximately $157 billion each year …

For And Against Marriage: A Revision, Anita Bernstein Nov 2003

For And Against Marriage: A Revision, Anita Bernstein

Michigan Law Review

When anthropologist Henry Sumner Maine issued his famous proclamation that modern legal development evolved "from Status to Contract," he used juridical categories to make a statement about progress. Voluntary relations now build the law, Maine declared. The alternative to voluntary relations - identity-based legal labels to decree what people may and may not do - must relocate to the dustbin of history. Only a backwater society would keep them. American legal change in the century-plus since Maine's death in 1888 gives credence to the claim that status inexorably yields to contract. At one level, newer developments refute the Maine thesis. …
