Race And Local Television News Crime Coverage, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt Nov 2003

Race And Local Television News Crime Coverage, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt

Communication Faculty Publications

Viewers of local television newscasts across the United States are regularly exposed to crime news stories. Crime coverage by local television stations is studied with an interest in how live reporting, dramatic video, and timeliness influence perceptions of race in the United States. Crime coverage did not always identify the race of a suspect because that information often was not available from police. However, when violent criminals or suspects were identified, race normally was shown through a mug shot, photograph, or video from the scene. When an African-American suspect was shown in police custody, the images tended to reinforce existing …

Health Hazards Of Welding Fumes, Sultan A. Meo, Thamir Al-Khlaiwi Nov 2003

Health Hazards Of Welding Fumes, Sultan A. Meo, Thamir Al-Khlaiwi

Saudi Medical Journal

Even in the twenty-first century, welding is still a common and a highly skilled occupation. The hazardous agents associated with welding processes are acetylene, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, ozone, phosgene, tungsten, arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, manganese, nickel, silver, tin, and zinc. All welding processes involve the potential hazards for inhalation exposures that may lead to acute or chronic respiratory diseases. According to literature described earlier it has been suggested that welding fumes cause the lung function impairment, obstructive and restrictive lung disease, cough, dyspnea, rhinitis, asthma, pneumonitis, pneumoconiosis, carcinoma of the lungs. In addition, welding …

Deniz: The Electronic Database For B-Thalassemia Mutations In The Arab World, Ghazi O. Tadmouri, Resul I. Gulen

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Data on the distribution of beta-thalassemia mutations in Arab populations are usually destined to disparate locations and much of these become increasingly difficult for an average researcher to locate. That is why we aimed at establishing an electronic database network, called Deniz, for beta-thalassemia allele frequency distributions in the Arab world at http://biobase.fatih.edu.tr. METHODS: The scheme of the database combines the benefits of the relational and hierarchical systems. Detailed statistics of the frequencies of beta-thalassemia mutations are retrieved in tabular forms. Multiple permanent connections allow flexible movement within the database. Queries are processed by the systems language and sent …

Contributory Or Comparative: Which Is The Optimal Negligence Rule?, Christopher J. Robinette, Paul G. Sherland Nov 2003

Contributory Or Comparative: Which Is The Optimal Negligence Rule?, Christopher J. Robinette, Paul G. Sherland

Northern Illinois University Law Review

In this article, the authors examine whether contributory or some form of comparative negligence is the superior rule based on the goals of tort law. The authors conclude pure comparative negligence is the preferable rule. From a compensation perspective, pure comparative negligence compensates the most tort victims. From a corrective justice perspective, pure comparative negligence, unlike the other rules, requires tortfeasors to correct their wrongs in all cases. Finally, the authors use statistical analyses to determine if any of the rules has a stronger deterrent effect than the others. Based on claims data for automobile accidents in the various jurisdictions, …

Gambling With Terrorism And U.S. Military Readiness: Time To Ban Video Gambling Devices On U.S. Military Bases And Facilities?, John Warren Kindt

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article examines the effect that video gambling devices (VGDs) on US military bases have on military readiness in the 21st century's "Age of Terrorism. " The harmful effects of gambling on military personnel outweigh any potential benefits. However, this conclusion is not clear from the information upon which military analysts and researchers rely. Upon examining the harmful effects that gambling has on military readiness, issues arise regarding the potential biases of the informational sources that study the impact of gambling. A review of these informational sources reveals that many sources have close associations with the gambling industry including the …

Killing The Fatted Calf: Managed Care Liability In A Post-Pegram World, Karene M. Boos, Eric J. Boos

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Over one hundred million Americans receive their health care benefits under some kind of managed care plan. At the heart of every managed care plan is an emphasis on cost containment. The courts traditionally protected the proprietary economic interests of managed care by holding that claims against managed care organizations and plan directors were preempted under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). This was done as a means of facilitating a better health care delivery system for Americans and in spite of the number of patients who suffered poor health consequences as a result of decisions by managed care …

Kaslow, James J. Goedert, Margaret Hilgartner, Steffanie A. Strathdee, Priya Duggal, Stephen J. O'Brien, Jacquie Astemborski, Mary Carrington

Biology Faculty Articles

Following an acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, clearance or persistence is determined in part by the vigor and breadth of the host immune response. Since the human leukocyte antigen system (HLA) is an integral component of the immune response, we hypothesized that the highly polymorphic HLA genes are key determinants of viral clearance. HLA class I and II genes were molecularly typed in 194 Caucasian individuals with viral persistence and 342 matched controls who had cleared the virus. A single class I allele, A*0301 (odds ratio [OR], 0.47; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.30 to 0.72; P = 0.0005) was …

Reconstructing The Genomic Architecture Of Mammalian Ancestors Using Multispecies Comparative Maps, William J. Murphy, Guillaume Bourque, Glenn Tesler, Pavel Pevzner, Stephen J. O'Brien Nov 2003

Reconstructing The Genomic Architecture Of Mammalian Ancestors Using Multispecies Comparative Maps, William J. Murphy, Guillaume Bourque, Glenn Tesler, Pavel Pevzner, Stephen J. O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

Rapidly developing comparative gene maps in selected mammal species are providing an opportunity to reconstruct the genomic architecture of mammalian ancestors and study rearrangements that transformed this ancestral genome into existing mammalian genomes. Here, the recently developed Multiple Genome Rearrangement (MGR) algorithm is applied to human, mouse, cat and cattle comparative maps (with 311-470 shared markers) to impute the ancestral mammalian genome. Reconstructed ancestors consist of 70-100 conserved segments shared across the genomes that have been exchanged by rearrangement events along the ordinal lineages leading to modern species genomes. Genomic distances between species, dominated by inversions (reversals) and translocations, are …

Variables Associated With The Likelihood Of Adopting A Policy Of Hiring Nonsmokers Only Among Nonprofit Organizations In Omaha, Nebraska, Jillian M. Golden Nov 2003

Variables Associated With The Likelihood Of Adopting A Policy Of Hiring Nonsmokers Only Among Nonprofit Organizations In Omaha, Nebraska, Jillian M. Golden

Student Work

To address the costs associated with employees who smoke, some organizations have adopted a policy of hiring nonsmokers only or may be considering such a policy. The purpose of this study was to explore the possible relationship between the degree of likelihood of adopting a policy of hiring nonsmokers only and four variables (type of service, number of employees, size of yearly budget, and the level of smoking policy). A written, mail-out/mail-back survey was sent to 130 nonprofit organizations in Omaha, Nebraska. Of the 130 participants in this study, 97 (75 percent) returned the survey. Descriptive statistics were calculated for …
