The Utility Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms In Inferences Of Population History, Robb T. Brumfield, Peter Beerli, Deborah A. Nickerson, Scott V. Edwards May 2003

The Utility Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms In Inferences Of Population History, Robb T. Brumfield, Peter Beerli, Deborah A. Nickerson, Scott V. Edwards

Faculty Publications

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) represent the most widespread type of sequence variation in genomes, yet they have only emerged recently as valuable genetic markers for revealing the evolutionary history of populations. Their occurrence throughout the genome also makes them ideal for analyses of speciation and historical demography, especially in light of recent theory suggesting that many unlinked nuclear loci are needed to estimate population genetic parameters with statistical confidence. In spite of having lower variation compared with microsatellites, SNPs should make the comparison of genomic diversities and histories of different species (the core goal of comparative biogeography) more straightforward than …

Mental Health Referral Patterns Of Rural Pastors, Alicia A. Clark May 2003

Mental Health Referral Patterns Of Rural Pastors, Alicia A. Clark

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

This research evaluated the role of the rural pastor in making mental health referrals. A questionnaire was mailed to pastors in several rural California counties in order to assess the referral patterns of pastors to mental health professionals. The questionnaire consisted of demographic information and Likert-style questions inquiring about pastoral interaction, willingness to refer, and referral history with mental health professionals. It was expected that many variables including levels of education, counseling experience, exposure to mental health, specific denominations, and belief systems would affect the referral pattern to mental health professionals. It was also expected that all rural pastors would …

Transformation And The Defense Industrial Base: A New Model, Robbin F. Laird May 2003

Transformation And The Defense Industrial Base: A New Model, Robbin F. Laird

Defense Horizons

American force transformation is about building a new expeditionary model with flexible, modular forces that can be managed on a global basis to protect U.S. interests. Breaking the tyranny of geography on military forces is a key aspect to change.

Transformation represents a shift in the demand side of the defense industrial business to provide for these new capabilities. The Department of Defense (DOD) is seeking system-of-systems management to deliver capabilities to the services and for joint military operations. This represents a shift from the past emphasis upon platforms and a primary focus upon service-specific technologies and programs.

As the …

This catalog accompanied the exhibit which illustrated the development and impact of printing, from Johann Gutenberg's mid-fifteenth century invention in Germany of moveable type, through its effects for the Renaissance in classical learning, for the Reformation in religion, for science and geography during the age of exploration, and (more briefly) for illustration, science, and literature. Among the items on display are an illuminated medieval manuscript codex from c. 1420; an early printed book from 1483, with hand-colored initials, and its original wooden binding; a wood-engraving by the German artist Albrecht Durer; a leaf from the 1611 first edition of the …

A Study Of Students' Learning Styles In Itv Broadcast, Remote, And Traditional Classrooms At East Tennessee State University., Donna Sue Crabtree

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if the learning styles of students enrolled in ITV sections and students enrolled in a traditional section of the same course, all taught by the same instructor, had any influence on the academic performance of the students enrolled in those courses.

A two-part survey was used to gather data for this study. The first part was designed by the researcher to gather demographic information about why each student selected the instructional form in which he or she was enrolled, as well as a student's preferences for classroom format. The second part of …

Bulgarian Contribution In Building The Byzantine Commonwealth In The Ninth And Tenth Centuries., Pavel Stoyanov Murdzhev May 2003

Bulgarian Contribution In Building The Byzantine Commonwealth In The Ninth And Tenth Centuries., Pavel Stoyanov Murdzhev

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines factors contributing to Bulgaria’s important role and involvement in the creation the Eastern European Orthodox Community under the cultural influence of Byzantine Empire from the middle of ninth century.

The study primarily uses original Greek and Latin sources translated either in Old Church Slavonic or in contemporary Bulgarian, Russian, Serbo-Croatian or English. The approach of this thesis places Bulgarian-Byzantine relations in the context of the creation of the Eastern European Orthodox Community, illustrating that adopting and interpreting of Byzantine culture by the Slavic nations is a process of mutual acculturation, with paramount importance for the creation of …

The United States And Colombia: The Journey From Ambiguity To Strategic Clarity, Gabriel Marcella Dr. May 2003

The United States And Colombia: The Journey From Ambiguity To Strategic Clarity, Gabriel Marcella Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

American strategy towards Colombia has shifted from a counternarcotics focus to more comprehensive support for that nation's security. This shift recognizes that Colombia's problems are deeply rooted and go beyond illegal narcotics. In the last year the Bush administration committed the United States to help Colombia defend democracy and to defeat the illegal armed groups of the left and right, doing so by promising to help that nation extend effective sovereignty over national territory and provide basic security to the people. The author identifies the strategic challenge of Colombia within the framework of the weak state and ungoverned space, made …

Get It Out Of My Backyard! Why We Need To Proactively Plan For “Sensitive” Uses, Tara A. Kelly May 2003

Get It Out Of My Backyard! Why We Need To Proactively Plan For “Sensitive” Uses, Tara A. Kelly

Master's Projects

Today’s planning literature is ripe with articles and books proclaiming the value of “Smart Growth” and to a lesser degree New Urbanism. Planning conferences*, magazines and websites repeatedly proclaim the need for planners and municipal leaders to adopt Smart Growth practices and New Urbanist design guidelines as they shape the futures of their regions.

Broadly, Smart Growth is a set of planning principles largely defined and popularized in reaction to what is seen as the failures of sprawling single-family development which has dominated post-World War II housing construction in the United States.

Smart Growth’s counterpart, New Urbanism, was developed primarily …

Scotia, California: From Lumber Mill Company Town To The New Urbanism Ideal, Joanna E. Gomes

Master's Projects

In northwestern California, nestled between the Eel River and redwood forests, survives the lumber mill company town of Scotia. For over one hundred years, the Pacific Lumber Company has owned and operated this small and friendly community. As one of the last surviving company towns in America, Scotia provides a glimpse of early efforts at site planning since much of its traditional layout endures. Where and how Scotia fits within the history of American company towns is explored in this paper. Also addressed is the evolution of company town design as a whole and the ways in which towns reflected …

"With A Joint View To The Entertainment And Information Of Mankind:" The Development Of Eighteenth Century British Tourism, Sarah Caroline Wegener

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Tourism in its current form did not exist until the nineteenth century with the emergence of the railroads. However, crucial developments in mid-eighteenth century Great Britain started the process leading to modem tourism. Over the course of the eighteenth century, the concept behind tourism expanded and its motivations were transformed. Early eighteenth century tourism was associated with wealth and class. United in their various interests by a common desire, tourists sought experience to assist them in their future life. By the end of the century a shift had taken place, and tourism took on a new face. Though this form …
