Restorative Justice And The Danger Of "Community", Robert Weisberg Jan 2003

Restorative Justice And The Danger Of "Community", Robert Weisberg

Utah Law Review

Community is another name for the phenomenally complex strand of populism in American history, in all of whose versions community is selectively invoked and law always appropriated to achieve highly contestable social ends to police boundaries or resolve disputes. At one extreme, we have from the 1960s Saul Alinsky-type left-wing "community organizing," which explicitly seeks to create a new sense of community identity in order to achieve highly specific redistributive goals. But, at the other extreme, we have racist enclave-protecting crime aimed at solidifying a sense of community, and somewhere along the continuum we have Not In My Backyard environmental …

Piano Letters., Scott Ronald Randall Jan 2003

Piano Letters., Scott Ronald Randall

Theses and Dissertations

In preparing this work of fiction, the author examined how characters used storytelling and acts of imagination to create their own lives. The two central characters of this work come to know one another largely through the sharing of memory and their shared imaginings, and their eventual union is a coming together of their individual stories. The text includes twelve short stories that may either be read as independent works or as a sustained whole.

Graduate Student Projects

The preparations, performance, and post-show analysis of a full scale production of Harvey involving young actors was studied. Twenty high school students and one recent high school graduate participated in the preparations, rehearsal, and performance of this production. The results helped prove the hypothesis that such a performance could be accomplished while meeting specified learning goals. Implications for program development are discussed.

Meristic And Morphometric Differences In Populations Of Rivulus Marmoratus, D. Scott Taylor Jan 2003

Meristic And Morphometric Differences In Populations Of Rivulus Marmoratus, D. Scott Taylor

Gulf of Mexico Science

Rivulus marmoratus (Pisces: Aplocheilidae) is a small cyprinodontid found in mangroves of the western tropical Atlantic and is the only known self-fertilizing, hermaphroditic vertebrate. Populations normally consist of genetically diverse groups of homozygous clones. Rivulus marmoratus has the widest range of any member of the genus (southern Brazil to central Florida) and is the only marine representative of the genus. There has been considerable speculation about the "origin" of the species in an otherwise sexually reproducing genus and family. Although well studied in the laboratory, few specimens have been collected from the wild until recently. This study examined meristic and …

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper I will discuss the effects of online communication on social connectivity and the development of community, as specifically related to teacher communities. I will then discuss modern technologies in the realm of CMC (Computer-Mediated Communication), the foundations of these technologies as actual tools for collaboration and community, and the role these technologies play in developing connectedness in communities. I will then draw out characteristics and value in virtual community interaction and its …
