Measuring Helping Behavior Across Cultures, Robert V. Levine Feb 2003

Measuring Helping Behavior Across Cultures, Robert V. Levine

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

This chapter focuses on some of the special challenges and difficulties in conducting cross-cultural research. In particular, it describes some of the problems my colleagues and I have faced in our own research: a series of studies in which helpfulness toward strangers was assessed in 36 cities across the United States and 23 large cities around the world. We conducted independent field experiments in each city to measure helping in various situations, such as seeing if passersby would alert a pedestrian who dropped a pen, offer help to a pedestrian with a hurt leg trying to reach a pile of …

University Extension And Urban Planning Programs: An Efficient Partnership, Zenia Kotval Feb 2003

University Extension And Urban Planning Programs: An Efficient Partnership, Zenia Kotval

Journal of Extension

Community-university partnerships have taken many forms as higher educational institutions assess their "engagement" while at the same time communities attempt to tap academia for needed resources. This article describes and evaluates the partnership developed between Extension and Urban and Regional Planning Program at Michigan State University, Urban Planning Partnerships. It is a model that provides an opportunity for a university to strengthen its links to communities throughout its state. It is a partnership that facilitates the experiential 1eaming needs of urban planning students while assisting urban Extension staff with capacity-building resources.

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The possibility to cross-species amplify microsatellites in fruit flies of the genus Ceratitis was tested with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by analysing 23 Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) microsatellite markers on the genomic DNA of three other economically important, congeneric species: C. rosa (Karsch), C. fasciventris (Bezzi) and C. cosyra (Walker). Twenty-two primer pairs produced amplification products in at least one of the three species tested. The majority of the products were similar, if not identical in size to those expected in C. capitata. The structures of the repeat motifs and their flanking sequences were examined for a total of 79 …

Who Are The Children Of Lehi?, D. Jeffrey Meldrum, Trent D. Stephens Jan 2003

Who Are The Children Of Lehi?, D. Jeffrey Meldrum, Trent D. Stephens

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

By covenanting with Abraham, God promised him that through his seed all the families of the earth would be blessed—his seed would be as leaven within bread. This metaphor can likewise be applied to the children of Lehi, who introduced the Abrahamic covenant to the much larger indigenous Mesoamerican population. The larger gene pool with which the children of Lehi assimilated makes it very likely that no genetic evidence will ever substantiate an American–Middle Eastern link, although Native American populations show a strong affinity with Asian populations. The assumption that all modern-day Native Americans are descended exclusively from Book of …

Before Dna, John L. Sorenson, Matthew Roper

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Critics of the Book of Mormon often cite genetic evidence in their attacks on the historicity of the text, saying that the lack of any Near Eastern–American Indian DNA links conclusively proves that no emigration ever occurred from the Near East to the Americas. Their simplistic approach—that the Book of Mormon purports to be a history of the entire American Indian race—is not supported by archaeological or Book of Mormon evidence. The authors pose and respond to questions about the geographical scene, the spread of Book of Mormon peoples, Latter-day Saint traditions about the scenes and peoples of the Book …

Dna And The Book Of Mormon: A Phylogenetic Perspective, Michael F. Whiting Jan 2003

Dna And The Book Of Mormon: A Phylogenetic Perspective, Michael F. Whiting

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

This paper debunks the myth that the Book of Mormon has been proved false by modern DNA evidence. Critics have tried to apply American Indian DNA-based research to the Book of Mormon without designing a study specifically for that purpose. It is extraordinarily difficult to use DNA sequence information to track the lineage of any group with such a complex lineage history as the Nephites and Lamanites. Possible hypotheses about the populations from the Book of Mormon include the global colonization hypothesis (in which the three colonizing groups came to a land void of humans) and the local colonization hypothesis …

Taking Root In The Silicon Forest: The Role Of High Technology Firms As Surrogate Universities In Portland, Oregon, Heike Mayer Jan 2003

Taking Root In The Silicon Forest: The Role Of High Technology Firms As Surrogate Universities In Portland, Oregon, Heike Mayer

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the evolution of the high technology industry in the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan region. The research explains how and why the region was able to grow a high technology industry cluster in the absence of a major world-class engineering and computer science research university. The research challenges the conventional assumption that a research university must be in place to create a high technology center. It was hypothesized that high technology firms functioned as surrogate research universities by attracting and developing labor, creating knowledge, and functioning as incubators for startup companies. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that a regional innovation milieu …
