Housing Discrimination In Metropolitan America: Findings From The Latest National Paired Testing Study, Margery Austin Turner, Stephen L. Ross
Economics Working Papers
During the summer and fall of 2000, local fair housing organizations in twenty major metropolitan areas nationwide conducted a total of 4,600 paired tests, directly comparing the treatment that African Americans and Hispanics receive to the treatment that whites receive when they visit real estate or rental offices to inquire about available housing. This study, which was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and conducted by the Urban Institute, provides the most complete and up-to-date information available about the persistence of housing market discrimination against African American and Hispanic homeseekers in large urban areas of the …

Question Negotiation And The Technological Environment, Joseph Janes, Joanne Silverstein
Question Negotiation And The Technological Environment, Joseph Janes, Joanne Silverstein
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
The information world is a very different place in 2003 than it was a few years ago. It is possible, for example, to find information more quickly and easily than ever before, using new tools, and drawing on sources of information unavailable or even nonexistent not so very long ago. People seeking answers or providing them now have many more options for "question negotiation", in the broadest Tayloresque sense [1]. Consulting an information professional continues to be one of those options. In fact, such professionals can now be much more accessible via these new tools and technologies.
Geographic Information System Methodologies To Evaluate Relationships Between Land Use And Groundwater Quality In South Central Kentucky, Rhonda Pfaff
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The development of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology has provided techniques for a holistic approach to the study of karst groundwater contamination. While karst groundwaters supply water to a large percentage of the earth's population, its complex environments often have lacked the scientific examination and conservation measures typical of non-karst regions. In this study, GIS methodologies were explored to examine the relationships between land-use and water quality in karst watersheds. Eight watersheds throughout southern and western Kentucky were examined. The study areas included the Mammoth Cave Karst Aquifer, which is the watershed that drains the Mammoth Cave System, and seven …

Effects Of Holocene Climate Change On Mercury Deposition In Elk Lake, Minnesota: The Importance Of Eolian Transport In The Mercury Cycle, W.F. Cannon, Walter E. Dean, John H. Bullock Jr.
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Sediments in Elk Lake, Minnesota, consist of 10,400 varve layers that provide a precise chronology for Holocene fluctuations in climate and biota recorded in the strata. Progressively greater concentrations and accumulation rates of mercury since ca. A.D. 1875 reflect deposition of anthropogenic mercury additions to the atmosphere. Within the Holocene record are numerous short intervals in which mercury concentrations and accumulation rates exceed the modern values. The highest mercury concentrations formed ca. 8 ka, coincident with a rapid change from cool, moist conditions to warm, dry conditions. A related change in flora from pine forest to prairie caused destruction of …

Intergovernmental Cooperation, Metropolitan Equity, And The New Regionalism, Laurie Reynolds
Intergovernmental Cooperation, Metropolitan Equity, And The New Regionalism, Laurie Reynolds
Washington Law Review
The economic gap between affluent suburbia and the urban core has recently received widespread attention among state and local government law scholars. Although the underlying normative arguments rest on very different rationales, scholars with a wide range of doctrinal approaches appear to have formed a consensus that the current concentration of wealth and resources in metropolitan areas is unacceptable. Their common goal of reducing regional disparities has made the scholarly dialogue a dispute over how, rather than whether, to achieve a better distribution. For many of what can be described as the "New Regionalist" scholars, voluntary intergovernmental cooperative efforts may …

Student Works (2000-2009)
Cinema Ticketing System (CTS) is my final year thesis project title. CTS is a web-enable management system. It designed for a local cinema organization use. With this capability, the system is able to provide tightly integrated online real-time reservation, payment transaction order and electronic information dissemination such as email and promotion to its members. Moviegoers, employee and the management level are the target group who will benefit if the system developed in a success. This report introduces the CTS project. It defines the objectives, significance, Scope and project schedule that should identified before development of this system. Beside that, it …

Background: Four multicenter Networks (GenNet, GENOA, HyperGEN, SAPPHIRe) form the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Family Blood Pressure Program (FBPP), to search for hypertension/blood pressure (BP) genes. The networks used different family designs and targeted multiple ethnic groups, using standardized protocols and definitions. Linkage genome scans were done on samples within each network (N = 6245 relatives). Methods: The evidence was synthesized using meta-analysis. Results: Combining ethnic groups, no region reached LOD >2, but several small peaks were identified, including chromosome 2p where two other recent reports find hypertension linkage. Conclusions: No regions show uniformly large effects on BP/hypertension …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications
A high diversity library of recombinant human antibodies was selected on complex antigen mixtures from midguts of female Anopheles gambiae Giles. The library of phage-displayed single chain variable region fragment constructs, derived from β-lymphocyte mRNA of naïve human donors, was repeatedly selected and reamplified on the insoluble fraction of midgut homogenates. Five rounds of panning yielded only one midgut-specific clone, which predominated the resulting antibody panel. In A. gambiae, the epitope was found throughout the tissues of females but was absent from the midgut of males. The cognate antigen proved to be detergent soluble but very sensitive to denaturation and …

The slate of Nebraska recently witnessed a controversy surrounding the names of several geophysical features, like rivers or creeks. According to a February 191 2001, Omaha World-Herald article by Todd von Kampen and Nichole Aksamit, the push was to change all the place names that contain the word "squaw" to more appropriate, less offensive names. The movement was strictly voluntary; no law required the changes. However, there was a good deal of resistance, even from some lawmakers. According to the article, Bellevue City Councilman John Stacey said, “I don’t have any problem with the name …

Henry Beard Delany And Emma Beard Delaney, Brien Laing
Books
Henry Beard Delany and Emma Beard Delaney were two African-Americans who rose from the obscurity of an enslaved family to achieve distinguished success in their individual lives. A period of time does not portray a history. To achieve that, one needs ideas, theories, and assumptions. There must be a concept with a structure systematically laid out, which reaches points of view leading to firm conclusions that allow the recording of this history of two dynamic African-Americans. This study is an examination of two remarkable lives. Theirs is a story of dignified control over their destinies, displaying only rare flinching from …

Asian trace gas and aerosol emissions into carbon, nitrogen, and other elemental cycles will figure prominently in near term Earth system evolution. Atmospheric hydrocarbon measurements resolve numerous chemical species and can be used to investigate sourcing for key geocarriers. A recent aircraft study of biomass burning and lightning (BIBLE A) explored the East Asian atmosphere and was unique in centering on the Indonesian archipelago. Samples of volatile organics taken over/between the islands of Japan, Saipan, Java, and Borneo are here examined as a guide to whole-air-based studies of future Asian biogeochemistry. The midlatitude onshore/offshore pulse and tropical convection strongly influence …

Urban Harbors Institute Publications
The boundary of a federally approved coastal program defines a geographic area that receives special planning and management attention through regulations, financial assistance, and technical support. Section 306(d)(2)(A) of the federal Coastal Zone Management Act provides the basis for determining the coastal boundary. In Section 304 of the act, the coastal zone refers to coastal waters (and the lands below them) and the adjacent shorelands, “strongly influenced by each other and in proximity to the shorelines of the several coastal states, including transitional and intertidal areas, salt marshes, wetlands, and beaches. The zone extends…seaward to the outer limit of State …

Russia In Afghanistan And Chechnya: Military Strategic Culture And The Paradoxes Of Asymmetric Conflict, Robert M. Cassidy Major
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The author uses a detailed assessment of the Russian experience in Afghanistan and Chechnya to draw important conclusions about asymmetric warfare. He then uses this to provide recommendations for the U.S. military, particularly the Army. Major Cassidy points out that small wars are difficult for every great power, yet are the most common kind. Even in this era of asymmetry, the U.S. Army exhibits a cultural preference for the "big war" paradigm. He suggests that the U.S. military in general, including the Army, needs a cultural transformation to master the challenge of asymmetry fully. From this will grow doctrine and …
