A Man's Home Is His Castle: A Look At The Relationship Between Fathers And Children In The Novels Of Jane Austen, Miranda M. Johnson-Parries Oct 2003

A Man's Home Is His Castle: A Look At The Relationship Between Fathers And Children In The Novels Of Jane Austen, Miranda M. Johnson-Parries

English Theses & Dissertations

In western society, the father is one of, if not the most, significant roles possible for a man. In the 18th C bourgeois family, he was especially crucial. In the novels of Jane Austen, the father, even when absent, is a central figure: Dead fathers influence their children by their lack of planning and absence, while a physically present, but mentally distant father has much the same effect. I will analyze how seemingly peripheral male characters within Jane Austen's novels react to their stations in life and try to manipulate them in a similar way to Austen's much analyzed …

Review Of Laura Ingalls Wilder And The American Frontier: Five Perspectives Edited By Dwight M. Miller, Philip Heldrich Oct 2003

Review Of Laura Ingalls Wilder And The American Frontier: Five Perspectives Edited By Dwight M. Miller, Philip Heldrich

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

One of the most interesting literary figures of the twentieth century, Laura Ingalls Wilder, through her books about the American heartland, examines in many ways the heart of America. She questions the Euroamerican pioneer experience, the racial tensions of the contested West, and assumptions about gender roles. Even her relationship with her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, asks readers to reconsider the privileging of authorial autonomy; and, with respect to genre aesthetics, Wilder's mimesis of autobiography blurs the line between fact and fiction. Laura Ingalls Wilder and the American Frontier: Five Perspectives, a collection of essays that originated at the …

Review Of The Jesus Road: Kiowas, Christianity, And Indian Hymns By Luke Eric Lassiter, Clyde Ellis, And Ralph Kotay, Benjamin R. Kracht Oct 2003

Review Of The Jesus Road: Kiowas, Christianity, And Indian Hymns By Luke Eric Lassiter, Clyde Ellis, And Ralph Kotay, Benjamin R. Kracht

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Christianity, metaphorically referred to as the "Jesus road," came to the Kiowas of southwestern Oklahoma towards the end of the nineteenth century. Today, most Kiowas are at least nominally Christian, and, like other Oklahoma Indians, render prayers and hymns in their Native tongue in services that are otherwise Baptist, Methodist, or Pentecostal. In explaining why the Kiowas accepted Christianity and how Kiowa hymns still play a vital part in Kiowa community life, The Jesus Road contributes to a growing body of literature about Native American Christians who have not abandoned their personal and cultural identity. Anthropologist Luke Eric Lassiter, historian …

Suitability Of Pulse Train™, A Novel Digitally Implemented Real-Time Control Technique, For Bifred Converter, Mehdi Ferdowsi, Ali Emadi, Mark Telefus, Anatoly Shteynberg

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Pulse TrainTM, a new control scheme, is presented and applied to a BIFRED converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), which avoids the light-load high-voltage stress problem. In contrast to the conventional control techniques, the principal idea of Pulse Train is to regulate the output voltage using a series of high and low energy pulses generated by the current of the inductor. In this paper, applicability of the proposed technique to both the input and magnetizing inductances of BIFRED converter is investigated. Analysis of BIFRED converter operating in DCM as well as the output voltage ripple estimation are …

Modeling And Analysis Of Fault Tolerant Multistage Interconnection Networks, Minsu Choi, Nohpill Park, Fabrizio Lombardi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Performance and reliability are two of the most crucial issues in today's high-performance instrumentation and measurement systems. High speed and compact density multistage interconnection networks (MINs) are widely-used subsystems in different applications. New performance models are proposed to evaluate a novel fault tolerant MIN arrangement, thereby assuring performance and reliability with high confidence level. A concurrent fault detection and recovery scheme for MINs is considered by rerouting over redundant interconnection links under stringent real-time constraints for digital instrumentation as sensor networks. A switch architecture for concurrent testing and diagnosis is proposed. New performance models are developed and used to evaluate …

Resolution Of Multiple Ssdna Structures In Free Solution Electrophoresis, Eve F. Fabrizio, Ali Nadim, James D. Sterling Oct 2003

Resolution Of Multiple Ssdna Structures In Free Solution Electrophoresis, Eve F. Fabrizio, Ali Nadim, James D. Sterling

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

By using high concentrations of buffer, electroosmotic flow within uncoated channels of a microfluidic chip was minimized, allowing the free solution electrophoretic separation of DNA. More importantly, because of the ability to efficiently dissipate heat within these channels, field strengths as high as 600 V/cm could be applied with minimal Joule heating (< 2 °C). As a result of the higher field strengths, separations within an 8-cm-long channel were achieved within a few minutes. However, when the electrophoretic separation of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) less than 22 bases in length was performed, containing the fluorophore Texas Red as an end label, more than the expected single peak was observed at this high electric field. On the other hand, the free solution electrophoresis of a double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) consisting of a random sequence did exhibit the expected single peak. The appearance of these multiple peaks for ssDNA is shown to be dependent upon the base content and sequence of the ssDNA as well as on the chemical structure of the fluorophore used to tag the DNA for detection. Specifically, the peaks can be attributed to different secondary structures that result either from hydrophobic interactions between the DNA bases and an uncharged fluorescent dye or from G-quadruplexes within guanine-rich strands.

The Enhancement Bias In Consumer Decisions To Adopt And Utilize Product Innovations, Shenghui Zhao, Robert J. Meyer, Jin K. Han Oct 2003

The Enhancement Bias In Consumer Decisions To Adopt And Utilize Product Innovations, Shenghui Zhao, Robert J. Meyer, Jin K. Han

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The ability of consumers to anticipate the value they will draw from new product generations that expand the capabilities of incumbent goods is explored. Drawing on previous research in affective forecasting, the work explores a hypothesis that consumers will frequently overestimate the benefits they envision drawing from new added product features and underestimate the learning costs required to realize those benefits. This hypothesis is tested using a computer simulation in which subjects are trained to play a Pacman-like arcade game where icons are moved over a screen by different forms of tactile controls. Respondents are then given the option to …

Store Brands: Who Buys Them And What Happens To Retail Prices When They Are Introduced?, Andre Bonfrer, Pradeep K. Chintagunta Oct 2003

Store Brands: Who Buys Them And What Happens To Retail Prices When They Are Introduced?, Andre Bonfrer, Pradeep K. Chintagunta

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this paper we study store brand demand behavior by examining a panel of household level and store-level data in five stores located in a competing market area. We seek to address three fundamental questions from this data. First, is there a link between store loyalty and brand loyalty? Second, does store loyalty raise store brand choice probabilities? Third, if a store brand is introduced into a category, what happens to the retail prices of the incumbent brands in the category? We find that store loyalty is negatively associated with brand loyalty, and that store loyalty increases the likelihood of …

Making The Key Agreement Protocol In Mobile Ad Hoc Network More Efficient, Gang Yao, Kui Ren, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng, Dengguo Feng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mobile ad hoc networks offer convenient infrastructureless communications over the shared wireless channel. However, the nature of mobile ad hoc networks makes them vulnerable to security attacks, such as passive eavesdropping over the wireless channel and denial of service attacks by malicious nodes. To ensure the security, several cryptography protocols are implemented. Due to the resource scarcity in mobile ad hoc networks, the protocols must be communication efficient and need as less computational power as possible. Broadcast communication is an important operation for many application in mobile ad hoc networks. To securely broadcast a message, all the members in the …

Adaptive Collusion Attack To A Block Oriented Watermarking Scheme, Yongdong Wu, Robert H. Deng Oct 2003

Adaptive Collusion Attack To A Block Oriented Watermarking Scheme, Yongdong Wu, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose an adaptive collusion attack to a block oriented watermarking scheme [1]. In this attack, traitors conspire to selectively manipulate watermarked blocks to remove the watermark information. To this end, the traitors compare the watermarked blocks generated from the same original block. If two watermarked block are not equal, they average these two blocks to generate a pirated block. Then, replace the watermarked blocks with the pirated blocks so as to build a pirated image. The pirated image has no watermark but has much higher quality than watermarked images. We also give a theoretical analysis on …

An Efficient Public-Key Framework, Jianying Zhou, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng Oct 2003

An Efficient Public-Key Framework, Jianying Zhou, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Public-key certificates play an important role in binding the public key with the identity of the owner of the corresponding private key. A certificate might be revoked before its scheduled expiry date by the issuing CA. Efficient and timely distribution of certificate revocation information is a big challenge facing the PKI providers. Existing certificate revocation schemes place a considerable processing, communication, and storage overheads on the CA as well as the relying parties. To improve the current situation, we propose a revocation-free public-key framework, in which the maximum lifetime of a certificate is divided into short periods and the certificate …

The Navlab group at Carnegie Mellon University has a long history of development of automated vehicles and intelligent systems for driver assistance. The earlier work of the group concentrated on road following, cross-country driving, and obstacle detection. The new focus is on short-range sensing, to look all around the vehicle for safe driving. The current system uses video sensing, laser rangefinders, a novel light-stripe rangefinder, software to process each sensor individually, and a map-based fusion system. The complete system has been demonstrated on the Navlab 11 vehicle for monitoring the environment of a vehicle driving through a cluttered urban environment, …

Automatic Video Summarization By Graph Modeling, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu-Fei Ma, Hong-Jiang Zhang Oct 2003

Automatic Video Summarization By Graph Modeling, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu-Fei Ma, Hong-Jiang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a unified approach for summarization based on the analysis of video structures and video highlights. Our approach emphasizes both the content balance and perceptual quality of a summary. Normalized cut algorithm is employed to globally and optimally partition a video into clusters. A motion attention model based on human perception is employed to compute the perceptual quality of shots and clusters. The clusters, together with the computed attention values, form a temporal graph similar to Markov chain that inherently describes the evolution and perceptual importance of video clusters. In our application, the flow of a temporal graph is …

An Efficient Known Plaintext Attack On Fea-M, Hongjun Wu, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng Oct 2003

An Efficient Known Plaintext Attack On Fea-M, Hongjun Wu, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Yi et al. have proposed a cipher called the fast encryption algorithm for multimedia (FEA-M). Recently Mihaljevi and Kohno pointed out that FEA-M is insecure. However, their attacks are not efficient: their chosen plaintext attack and known plaintext attack require 237-bit chosen plaintext and 260-bit known plaintext, respectively. In this paper we give an efficient known plaintext attack against FEA-M. Our attack requires only 228-bit known plaintext and about 233 XOR operations.
