Civic Environmentalism: A Model For Everglades Restoration And A Sustainable South Florida, Teresa U. Jabour
Civic Environmentalism: A Model For Everglades Restoration And A Sustainable South Florida, Teresa U. Jabour
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The Everglades restoration is now the centerpiece for environmental policymaking in South Florida. The 1991 settlement of the Everglades lawsuit marked a new era of environmental politics known as civic environmentalism. Concepts of civic environmentalism are used in this study to determine if policies developed since the 1991 lawsuit settlement support a successful Everglades restoration and a sustainable South Florida, a vital connection that ensures the socio-economic health of the built environment as well as the environmental health of South Florida's unique ecosystems. Indicators reveal that legislation supports a democratic process, but a nonformal model of civic environmentalism demonstrates that …

Comparison Of Demographics, Motivation, And Learning Strategies Of College Students Taking Traditional Campus-Based Courses And Internet-Based Distance Learning Courses, Deborah L. Maupin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The purpose of this study was to examine some the differences between students in traditional face-to-face courses and those in distance learning courses. Differences in teaming strategies, motivation, and demographics were examined. The study used an online version of the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) to assess the motivation and learning strategies used by college students. The instrument was administered to 111 students at a 4-year, public university in the southeast region of the United States during the Spring of 2003. The subjects included 64 students enrolled in the traditional campus-based version of Applied Educational Technology and 47 students …
Effect Of Music As A Nursing Intervention To Reduce Anxiety In Coronary Bypass And Valve Replacement Surgery Patients, Elizabeth J. Twiss
Effect Of Music As A Nursing Intervention To Reduce Anxiety In Coronary Bypass And Valve Replacement Surgery Patients, Elizabeth J. Twiss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The study investigated the effects of music to reduce anxiety and decrease intubation times in coronary artery bypass graft and valve replacement surgical patients in an acute care hospital. Anxiety can contribute to everything from heightened emotional stress, increased pain, blood pressure changes as well as lethal cardiac dysrhythmia and reduction in peripheral and renal perfusion. Research has shown, music as a therapeutic modality, relieves anxiety and pain in patients before and after surgery. What patients hear during surgery can be a rich source of anxiety. Wearing earphones during surgery will eliminate this source of anxiety. Music is reported to …
Effects Of Disability Labels On Special Education And General Education Teachers' Referrals For Gifted Programs, Margarita Bianco-Cornish
Effects Of Disability Labels On Special Education And General Education Teachers' Referrals For Gifted Programs, Margarita Bianco-Cornish
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study investigated the effect of the disability labels learning disabilities (LD) and emotional handicaps (EH) on general education and special education teachers' willingness to refer students to gifted programs. Referral differences between general education and special education teachers were also examined. Two hundred forty-seven teachers (195 general education teachers and 52 special education teachers) from one south Florida school district participated in this study. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions (no label, LD, EH) and asked to read a vignette describing a gifted student. All vignettes were identical except for one statement added to the LD …
Effect Of Steel Reinforcement Type And Surface Condition On Corrosion Initiation In Mortar, Yirong. Huang
Effect Of Steel Reinforcement Type And Surface Condition On Corrosion Initiation In Mortar, Yirong. Huang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study employed half-cell potential (Eoc), polarization resistance (PR) and galvanic current tests to explore effects of surface condition and steel reinforcement type on corrosion initiation in mortar. A low impurity steel plate and #10 grade 60 rebar were used. Four surface conditions (as-received, atmospherically rusted, #240 SiC paper polished, and #500 SiC paper polished) were employed. Cyclic wet and dry exposure of specimens in 15% NaCl solution was conducted. Half-cell potential measurements showed that the corrosion probability of specimens with as-received and pre-rusted surfaces was lower than that of specimens with a polished surface. However, the PR and galvanic …

High Frequency Pure Tone Audiometry And High Frequency Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions: A Correlational Analysis, Kimberly J. Lavoie
High Frequency Pure Tone Audiometry And High Frequency Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions: A Correlational Analysis, Kimberly J. Lavoie
Dissertations and Theses
Previous studies show that pure tone thresholds are strongly correlated with distortion product otoacoustic emission amplitudes when evaluating the frequency range from 1 to 8 kHz (Avan & Bonfils, 1993). Little is known about correlations between these two measures at higher frequencies from 9-16 kHz. This study compared pure tone thresholds and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) in this high frequency range for 29 normal hearing subjects ages 18-30. Pure tone thresholds were obtained at 250-16 kHz and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) 2,211-17,675 were measured in the same ears. DPOAE amplitudes were measured using a constant F1/F2 ratio of …

Cultural Change And "Catholic Lawyers", Stephen F. Smith

If there is anything that America definitely does not need, it would seem, it is more lawyers. Over the last thirty years or so, the number of lawyers practicing in the United States has almost tripled to current levels of roughly 900,000 practicing attorneys. To this number, our nation's law schools add another 35,000 attorneys annually. In spite of this, the purpose of this special inaugural law review issue is to commemorate the founding of a new school, the Ave Maria School of Law. It is an honor for me to be able to share in the joy and pride …

Legal Separation: The Relationship Between Law School And The Central University In The Late Nineteenth Century, Mark Bartholomew
Legal Separation: The Relationship Between Law School And The Central University In The Late Nineteenth Century, Mark Bartholomew
Journal Articles
Using Yale Law School as an example, this Article describes the interaction between university-affiliated law schools and the larger university during a crucial period in the development of legal education: the last third of the nineteenth century. At the same time, the Article contrasts Yale with other law schools of the day to show what made Yale unique and how Yale’s nineteenth-century idiosyncrasies would come to shape legal education at other schools in the twentieth century. Part I examines the university administration’s attitude toward the law school and how it typified law school-university relations in the late nineteenth century. Part …

A Crisis Of Caring: A Catholic Critique Of American Welfare Reform, Vincent D. Rougeau
A Crisis Of Caring: A Catholic Critique Of American Welfare Reform, Vincent D. Rougeau
Journal Articles
The current deterioration of the American economy is bringing new attention to the problem of poverty in the United States. After falling over the last few years, the number of Americans living in poverty has begun to rise once again. Notwithstanding the achievements of recent "welfare reforms," the American poor continue to be numerous by any measure.
Unfortunately, decades of affluence have exacerbated American tendencies to view liberal concepts such as freedom, autonomy, tolerance, and choice in ways that accentuate personal autonomy over community integration. These liberal values have been increasingly unhinged from strong countervailing principles like duty and responsibility, …
Pope John Paul Ii And The Dignity Of The Human Being, John J. Coughlin
Pope John Paul Ii And The Dignity Of The Human Being, John J. Coughlin
Journal Articles
Since his election in 1978 as the Successor to the Apostle Peter, His Holiness Pope John Paul II has remained one of the principal protagonists on the global stage for the dignity and value of every human being. Although the popular press and media sometimes have been slow to recognize this message, an online search of the Holy Father's copious encyclicals, addresses, and homilies reveals that he has advocated human dignity literally hundreds of times during the course of his twenty-five year pontificate. In fact, long before his election as Pope, Karol Wojtyla was developing his understanding of the dignity …

The International Telecommunications Sector : A Financial Investigation Of Post Privatisation Performance, Nasser Mubarak Shafi Al-Shafi
The International Telecommunications Sector : A Financial Investigation Of Post Privatisation Performance, Nasser Mubarak Shafi Al-Shafi
Plymouth Business School Theses
The focus of this thesis is an investigation of the post-privatisation performance of the international telecoms sector. Firstly, the general hypothesis (1) of this thesis has been pursued, which states that the privatised telecoms companies perform differently from their non-privatised (private) counterparts. Several tests were applied; namely, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. The principal finding was that there was no significant difference in performance. Secondly, the next hypothesis (2) states that the financial performance of each company is positively related to that of the other two selected companies. For this purpose, multiple regression tests were performed to investigate any inter-relationships …
An Empirical Study Of Malaysian Firms' Capital Structure, Sharifah Raihan Syed Mohd Zain
An Empirical Study Of Malaysian Firms' Capital Structure, Sharifah Raihan Syed Mohd Zain
Plymouth Business School Theses
It is sometimes purported that one of the factors affecting a firm's value is its capital structure. The event of the 1997 Asian financial crisis was expected to affect the firms' gearing level as the firms' earnings deteriorated and the capital market collapsed. The main objective of this research is to examine empirically the determinants of the capital structure of Malaysian firms. The main additional aim is to study the capital structure pattern following the 1997 financial crisis. Empirical tests were conducted on two different data sets: the first data set is the published data extracted from Datastream and consists …
