Globalization Of Innovations: A Multilevel-Multimethod Framework To Explain Diffusion And Adoption Of The Internet, Nir B. Kshetri Jan 2003

Globalization Of Innovations: A Multilevel-Multimethod Framework To Explain Diffusion And Adoption Of The Internet, Nir B. Kshetri

Open Access Dissertations

Little research has been conducted to understand the factors influencing the global diffusion of information and communications technologies (ICTs) such as the Internet. Moreover, the existing literature has a severe lack of studies dealing with the diffusion of ICTs in developing countries. The developing countries' increasingly important roles in international relations and global e-commerce make research focusing on Internet diffusion in these countries still more important. A focus on the developing world--home to 80% of humanity--is also an antidote to the tendency in the field of consumer research of becoming "increasingly isolated and of marginal relevance". To fill these research …

Stress Management During Pregnancy: An Investigation Of The Psychosocial, Behavioral, And Cognitive Correlates, Leanne Marie Mauriello Jan 2003

Stress Management During Pregnancy: An Investigation Of The Psychosocial, Behavioral, And Cognitive Correlates, Leanne Marie Mauriello

Open Access Dissertations

Health professionals recognize and study the multitude of health risks initated by the occurrence of stress during childbearing months. However, very few researchers have examined how women cope with or manage stress during pregnancy. In this study preliminary measurement and prediction analyses were conducted to initiate research on stress management during pregnancy using the framework of the Transtheoretical Model. A sample of 156 pregnant women was recruited from waiting rooms at midwife and obstetrician offices. Measures of decisional balance, confidence, stress, and coping specific to a pregnant population were developed. Exploratory measurement analyses produced relatively brief and internally consistent instruments …

The Embedded Writing Institute: A Study Of Professional Development, Beverly A. Paesano Jan 2003

The Embedded Writing Institute: A Study Of Professional Development, Beverly A. Paesano

Open Access Dissertations

In this ethnographic inquiry, I examined the experiences of twenty-one teachers who engaged in a job-embedded model of professional development in the teaching and learning of writing. This initiative, which became known as the Embedded Institute, draws from the National Writing Project model of teacher development that is commonly referred to in Writing Project sites across the country as the Summer Institute. The Embedded Institute reflected a nation-wide shift in the principles that inform practices of teacher development and of teaching and learning writing. Such a shift from product to process-oriented and from teacher to learner-centered practices both in teacher …

Gilded Age Spaces, Actual And Imagined: Edith Wharton As A Spatial Activist And Analyst, Renee Dara Somers Jan 2003

Gilded Age Spaces, Actual And Imagined: Edith Wharton As A Spatial Activist And Analyst, Renee Dara Somers

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation seeks to alter the reductive classification of Edith Wharton as "the upper class, Old New York, author of fiction" by re-imagining her place in American literature and culture. Viewing Wharton as a spatial activist accomplishes this task; she devoted much of her life to exploring the relationships that exist between people and their built environments. Wharton's spatial activism can be found in her interior design, her architecture, her landscape artistry and her life in general as much as they can be located in her literary texts. Her theories of space are practiced and materially executed, in addition to …

From Free/Slave Binaries To Black/White Dialectics: The Problem Of Race In Antebellum Discourse (1831-1861), Sally Gomaa Jan 2003

From Free/Slave Binaries To Black/White Dialectics: The Problem Of Race In Antebellum Discourse (1831-1861), Sally Gomaa

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation argues that the death of slavery in the nineteenth-century paralleled the birth of "race" as an operational term in matters of social policy, cultural production, and legal disputes. This claim requires investigating the dialectical relationship between Blackness and Whiteness as categories of being. Therefore, this project operates on two levels: fixing the boundaries between Blackness and Whiteness in the antebellum period in order to unfix them, and contesting the idea of boundaries or boundary-making as an ontological act. Specifically, this project looks at four dimensions of the discourse of race in antebellum America: law as a constitutive element …

Best Methods For Increasing Medical Translators For Limited English Proficient Patients: The Carrot Or The Stick?, Paula Hein Jan 2003

Best Methods For Increasing Medical Translators For Limited English Proficient Patients: The Carrot Or The Stick?, Paula Hein

Journal of Law and Health

Private physicians struggle to provide translators for patients, especially in rural areas like the one in which Dr. Kerr practices. Translators cost anywhere from thirty dollars to four hundred dollars depending on such factors as the time needed to translate, whether or not the translator is trained as a medical translator, and the language that is being translated. Telephone language lines, which provide translation over the phone through a dial up service, costs providers an average of two dollars and fifty cents ($2.50) per minute. There is also the price of the extra personnel time that is required to develop, …

Dramatic Relocation: The Time And Place For Shakespeare On Film, Lydia Lunning Jan 2003

Dramatic Relocation: The Time And Place For Shakespeare On Film, Lydia Lunning

Honors Papers

"Doing Shakespeare is simply harder than anything else," Colm Feore says to his interviewer, while apparently on break from rehearsing his role as Marcus Andronicus before principal photography begins for Julie Taymor's film, Titus (1999). "It's harder than Chekov, it's harder than Moliere, it's harder than Racine, it's harder than .. . anything!" ("The Making of Titus," DVD Special Features). The team involved in Michael Almereyda's Hamlet (2000) as well as that of Richard Loncraine's Richard III (1995) didn't have it any easier. By all accounts of each filmmaking process, none of the films to be discussed here had the …

Yoga 'Holistic' Exercise In Ohio, Theresa Schmidt Jan 2003

Yoga 'Holistic' Exercise In Ohio, Theresa Schmidt

Honors Papers

Yoga is depicted in U.S. popular culture as the sacred practice of an ancient tradition, guaranteed to initiate the western participant into the secrets of health and well being, i.e. a low-impact exercise regimen. However, the yoga that is practiced in the U.S. is often removed from its actual history. The physical practices are regularly isolated from the holistic philosophy and come to be understood as the entirety of yoga and marketed as a "spiritual" form of exercise. This paper will explore literature relevant to these themes and examine the reasons for yoga's popularity and the manner in which it …

"Stuff You Really Want To Read:" Pleasure And Negotiation In Teen Magazine Reading, Margaret E. Troyer Jan 2003

"Stuff You Really Want To Read:" Pleasure And Negotiation In Teen Magazine Reading, Margaret E. Troyer

Honors Papers

The first half of my paper closely examines teen magazines, with three major thematic areas of focus. Because the constructed ideal is such a fundamental part of teen magazines' pleasure, I look at editors' rhetorical strategies for establishing their expectations of their audience. Teen magazines depend so heavily on advertising revenue that they must necessarily construct the ideal teen as materialistic. In my next section, I consider some effects of magazines' focus on commodities. Finally, I look at the ways in which the special discourse of teen magazines shapes the constructed ideal and affects readers' pleasure. I focus on the …

Cloning And Characterization Of A Git1 Homolog Gene From Schizosaccharomyces Pombe, Christi Nolder Jan 2003

Cloning And Characterization Of A Git1 Homolog Gene From Schizosaccharomyces Pombe, Christi Nolder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Phosphatidylinositol (PI) deacylation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae results in the formation and excretion of glycerophosphoinositol (GPI). This is a predominant route of PI turnover and is not unique to S. cerevisiae. Released GPI can be transported back into the cell through a membrane permease encoded by the GIT1 gene, Git1p. Maximum transport is achieved in low inositol/low phosphate conditions at pHs below 7, and the addition of a protonophore to the GPI transport assay abolishes transport activity. These findings suggest that Git1p is a proton symporter. An excess of unlabeled glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P) inhibits the transport of radiolabeled GPI into S. cerevisiae. …

Theoretical Aspects Of Designing New Vaccines For Breast Cancer: Docking Studies Of Peptide/Hla-A2.1 Complexes, Tugba Kucukkal Jan 2003

Theoretical Aspects Of Designing New Vaccines For Breast Cancer: Docking Studies Of Peptide/Hla-A2.1 Complexes, Tugba Kucukkal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

HER2/neu is a transmembrane glycoprotein that is overexpressed in many tumors, including ovarian and breast cancers. The HER2/neu peptide IISAVVGIL (GP2) is recognized by tumor-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes in the context of human class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC) HLA-A2.1. One limiting-factor for using GP2 as a tumor vaccine is its poor affinity for HLA-A2.1, even though it has the correct peptide-binding motif. The research aims are to develop an accurate docking method for the binding of GP2 to HLA-A2.1, to understand the molecular forces that give rise to strong binding, and to predict mutations that lead to new tumor …

The Responsibility To Protect: A Beaver Without A Dam Review Of The Responsibility To Protect: Reprot Of The International Commission On Intervention And State Sovereignty, Jeremy I. Levitt Jan 2003

The Responsibility To Protect: A Beaver Without A Dam Review Of The Responsibility To Protect: Reprot Of The International Commission On Intervention And State Sovereignty, Jeremy I. Levitt

Journal Publications

The beaver's dam is comparable to protective intervention for at-risk populations.' Beavers need dams to enlarge the underwater habitat that will be open to them in winter, by creating a pond deep enough so that the bottom will not freeze. Humanitarian corridors and safe havens serve parallel functions for displaced civilians during times of conflict. Deep water, whether it is due to a beaver dam or not, provides storage for winter food and year-round underwater access to the den secure from predators. The shelter and safety deep water provides can be likened to the physical protection needed to safeguard civilians …

Problem Behavior Theory In An Ethnically Diverse Female Prison Sample, Kristen J. Quinlan Jan 2003

Problem Behavior Theory In An Ethnically Diverse Female Prison Sample, Kristen J. Quinlan

Open Access Master's Theses

Research on female inmates has shown that this population engages in a variety of risky behaviors, like alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and risky sexual activities, and that these problem behaviors seem to share high positive intercorrelations. Problem Behavior Theory (PBT) explains these positive intercorrelations by viewing problem behaviors like alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and risky sexual activities as a single factor, or a single behavioral syndrome. Although the presence of this syndrome has been demonstrated in a variety of ethnically diverse adolescent samples, little work has been done to evaluate its presence in a sample of adults. Adult female inmantes …

Scale Validation Of High School Teachers’ Attitudes Toward Inclusion Of Students With Disabilities, Catherine Ernst Jan 2003

Scale Validation Of High School Teachers’ Attitudes Toward Inclusion Of Students With Disabilities, Catherine Ernst

Open Access Master's Theses

Research has shown that teacher attitudes influence their expectations of students and the way in which they interact with them (Brophy & Good, 1972; Brownwell & Pajares, 1999; Bryan 1974; Cook 2001; Harris, Snodgrass, & Rosenthal, 1986; Jordan & Stanovich, 2001; Kuklinski & Weinstein, 2001; Rosenthal, 2002). Ajzen and Fishbein (1969) developed the Theory of Reasoned Action, which proposes that people's behavior is determined by intention and that these intentions are represented in people's attitudes toward the behavior and the perceived norm of that behavior. Beginning with the passage of Public Law 94-142 and the IDEA reauthorization, regular education teachers …

International Regulation Of Underwater Sound: Establishing Rules And Standards To Address Ocean Noise Pollution, Elena Marie Mccarthy Jan 2003

International Regulation Of Underwater Sound: Establishing Rules And Standards To Address Ocean Noise Pollution, Elena Marie Mccarthy

Open Access Dissertations

An increasing awareness of anthropogenic sound in the ocean has generated international concern that it is affecting marine mammal behavior and could affect entire marine ecosystems as well. Presently there is a lack of a coherent policy framework for evaluating the environmental impacts of underwater noise pollution. No international treaties or laws specifically address the transmission of sound in waters under national jurisdiction or on the high seas. This dissertation examines the issue of underwater noise pollution in a global context and considers the extent to which the international legal and environmental community has addressed it. The sharp increase in …

Herpetofaunal Inventory Of Arkansas Post National Memorial, Arkansas County, Arkansas, Malcolm L. Mccallum, Stanley E. Trauth, Robert G. Neal, Vernon E. Hoffman

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Arkansas Post National Memorial (ARPO) is a unique historical landmark with an interesting herpetofaunal community. We conducted an amphibian and reptile inventory of this national park from 2000-2002. We found eight amphibian and 21 reptilian species inhabiting the park. These included eight species not previously identified at ARPO. Overall species richness was highest at Alligator Slough, although the northern portion of ARPO was relatively rich. Aquatic trophic guilds included 7 (36.8%) piscivores, 7 (36.8%) omnivores, 4 (21.1%) insectivores, and one (5.3%) carnivore. The terrestrial trophic guilds included 13 (76.5%) insectivores, 2 (11.8%) carnivores, and 1 (5.9%) each of omnivores …

Perceptions Of Minorities' Criminal Involvement In Grand Rapids: Community And Media Dialogue, Rafael E. Castanon Jan 2003

Perceptions Of Minorities' Criminal Involvement In Grand Rapids: Community And Media Dialogue, Rafael E. Castanon

McNair Scholars Journal

This study examines media overrepresentation and its effects on community perception. The research examines the perception of racial/ethnic involvement in violent crimes in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Grand Rapids Police Department arrest reports for violent crime were dichotomized by race/ethnicity and compared to news articles reporting violent crimes found in the Grand Rapids Press to determine if a disparity exists between those data sets. To measure public perceptions, questionnaires were administered concerning racial/ethnic groups and their likelihood to commit violent crimes. The overall intention is to provide a better understanding of root causes of minority disparity within the Criminal Justice System.

“Guided By Faith And Matchless Fortitude”: Milton’S Portrayal Of The Son In Paradise Lost, Ryan Mccarty Jan 2003

“Guided By Faith And Matchless Fortitude”: Milton’S Portrayal Of The Son In Paradise Lost, Ryan Mccarty

McNair Scholars Journal

Though he was Secretary of Language during Oliver Cromwell’s Puritan rule of England, John Milton never referenced the authoritarian figure in his greater works. Through examinations of texts discussing Paradise Lost in reference to seventeenth century British history, this essay seeks to show the placement of Cromwell as the Son. Although several dominant figures in the field of Milton studies have produced works that support this thesis, there has been no direct connection between the two militant figures of Christ and Cromwell. Investigating Milton’s philosophies regarding the timeless nature of his work, the significant anthropomorphic intentions of Paradise Lost become …
