"Muslim Rage" And Islamic Law, Wael B. Hallaq Jan 2003

"Muslim Rage" And Islamic Law, Wael B. Hallaq

UC Law Journal

In this Lecture, it is argued that a significant factor behind the recent rise of so-called Islamic "fundamentalism," in both of its violent and nonviolent forms, is the structural uprooting of the Islamic legal institutions during the middle of the nineteenth century and thereafter (a factor neglected by analysts). When the colonialist powers induced western legal "reforms" that came to displace traditional and indigenous Islamic law, little did they realize that such a process of aggressive change was in the long run to lead to both brutal military dictatorships (during the past half century) and, more recently, to violent reactions …

Fear And Loathing In America: Application Of Treason Law In Times Of National Crisis And The Case Of John Walker Lindh, Suzanne Kelly Babb

UC Law Journal

Treason is the only crime defined in the Constitution. It occupies this notable position neither because the framers were particularly fearful of the effects of traitorous activities nor because they believed it to be far more heinous than all other crimes. Rather, the available historical notes, and the language of the provision itself, make clear that the reason the constitution's authors included a definition for the crime of treason was because they were concerned with what might happen to those accused of the crime if it were not carefully circumscribed. Treason is a loaded concept, carrying with it notions of …

“Promise Me Nothing On Heroes’ Square: Marianne Hoppe’S Twentieth Century", William Grange Prof. Dr.

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

On the occasion of Marianne Hoppe=s death in Siegsdorf, Bavaria on October 23, 2002, obituaries in several German newspapers recalled her as one of the great stars of the Third Reich. Most recalled her rise under the Nazis, and some inferred that she attained stardom largely for the wrong reasons. Her marriage to Hermann Goering's favorite actor and director, Gustaf Gründgens (1899-1963), was a political cloud that hovered over her until her death. Her frank admission that she was aware of the regime=s persecution, terror, and concentration camps did little to dispel persistent misgivings about her, even as she continued …

Janosky, Michael J. Fine, Mahlon Raymund, Stephen A. Wilson, Inis Jane Bardella, Anne R. Medsger, Mary Patricia Nowalk

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

BACKGROUND: Despite strong evidence of the effectiveness of influenza vaccination, immunization rates have reached a plateau that is below the 2010 national goals. Our objective was to identify facilitators of, and barriers to, vaccination in diverse groups of older patients.

METHODS: A survey was conducted in 2000 by computer assisted telephone interviewing of patients from inner-city health centers, Veterans Affairs (VA) outpatient clinics, rural practices, and suburban practices. The inclusion criteria were age ≥ 66 years and an office visit after September 30, 1998.

RESULTS: Overall, 1007 (73%) interviews were completed among 1383 patients. Influenza vaccination rates …

Bob Lewis’ Encounter With The ‘Great Death:’ Port Jervis’ Entrance Into The ‘United States Of Lyncherdom, Kristopher B. Burrell

Publications and Research

This paper is a local study of a lynching in Port Jervis, New York in 1892. The victim was a black man, Bob Lewis. This study intends to situate Lewis’ lynching in both its historical and cultural contexts. Larger than that, this paper argues that even though southern and northern lynchings, particularly when the victims were African American, resembled one another in several important ways—including higher incidences of mutilation and torture; often becoming a form of white communal entertainment in which white participants often collected and/or sold relics in order to commemorate the event; and the bodies often being left …

Linguistic Landscapes Of Bangkok, Thom Huebner Jan 2003

Linguistic Landscapes Of Bangkok, Thom Huebner

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The effects of globalization of the world economy on English, now the dominant world language, has been well documented. While increasing attention has been paid to its changing form and to issues of identity and power (Phillipson 1992, Pennycook 1994, 1998, Fishman et al. 1996, McArthur 1998, Bex and Watts 1999, etc.), less attention has been paid to the effects of globalization on the use of other languages for wider communication, particularly in large cosmopolitan urban areas in expanding circle countries. The current paper examines over 600 signs found in fifteen Bangkok "neighborhoods" to explore how the use of language …

Case Studies On The Implementation Of The Workforce Investment Act: Focus On Accessibility, Sheila Fesko, Jaimie Ciulla Timmons, Allison Cohen Hall

Case Studies Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

Universal access is a central tenet of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and mandates that One-Stop Career Center (One-Stop) services be accessible for individuals with disabilities. Partnerships between Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) and workforce development agencies have increased awareness about the importance of service accessibility and states have been responding to this issue in their planning and service delivery. This brief highlights the innovative strategies states have used to make their One-Stops better able to support job seekers with disabilities. This brief is part of a series of products offering practical solutions for state and local entities as they implement the …
