Georgia Southern University's Mentoring Administrators Program: A Program Evaluation, Gina Gibbs Williams Jan 2003

Georgia Southern University's Mentoring Administrators Program: A Program Evaluation, Gina Gibbs Williams

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

High stakes accountability in education has changed nearly everything in school leadership. In the past, principals were expected to simply hold school each day with classes running smoothly and in an orderly fashion. Rising expectations have prompted state legislatures across the United States to implement high stakes accountability systems that hold schools responsible for student achievement. The responsibility for raising student achievement rests student achievement. The responsibility for raising student achievement rests one way to cultivate and make ready new administrators for the challenges that they will face as they begin their careers.

The purpose of this study was to …

A Comparison Of Youth Participation Motives In Organized Sports, Kirsty L. Carrihill Jan 2003

A Comparison Of Youth Participation Motives In Organized Sports, Kirsty L. Carrihill

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Youth participation in organized physical activity has increased by more than 5 million in the last decade (Smith & Smoll, 2002). Of the 48 million youth 8 to 16 years old in the United States, 20 million participated in organized sport (Gould & Petlichkoff, 1998; Seefeldt & Ewing, 1997; Smith & Smoll, 2002). Currently, the average age for youth to begin participating in organized sports in, or outside of, school is 11 years old (Klint & Weiss, 1986; Smith & Smoll, 2002). Although participation rates have increased, there are significant numbers of youth who drop out of sport. Over one-third …

Novel Techniques For Investigating The Permeation Properties Of Environmentally-Friendly Paper Coatings: The Influence Of Structural Anisotropy On Fluid Permeation In Porous Media, Paul Bodurtha Jan 2003

Novel Techniques For Investigating The Permeation Properties Of Environmentally-Friendly Paper Coatings: The Influence Of Structural Anisotropy On Fluid Permeation In Porous Media, Paul Bodurtha

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

In this study, we have investigated the effects of structural anisotropy of porous media on the permeation of fluids. The motivation for the work was an increased understanding of the permeation of inks into paper coatings, which often contain platey or needle-like particles, which have been aligned during the coating process. However, the findings are also relevant to other systems, such as the sub-terranean migration of fluids, including pollutants, within shale that contains particles of high aspect ratio. Mineral pigments, comprising mainly of calcium carbonate or clay, are often are applied to the surface of paper to improve optical and …

Investigation Of Primary Productivity Along The Atlantic Meridional Transect (50°N To 33°S) Through Fast Repetition Rate Fluorometry, Claudia Yuki Omachi Jan 2003

Investigation Of Primary Productivity Along The Atlantic Meridional Transect (50°N To 33°S) Through Fast Repetition Rate Fluorometry, Claudia Yuki Omachi

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Phytoplankton physiology and primary productivity at basin scales were determined using in situ data from fast repetition rate (FRR) fluorometry. Samples were collected along the Atlantic Meridional Transect cruise 11 (AMTll, September-October 2000), between 50°N and 33°S in the Atlantic Ocean. Because of the large-scale nature of the study, consistent knowledge about oceanographic conditions and the phytoplankton community structure of each sampling station were required. The province analysis was carried out by detecting the regional variations of water mass characteristics in the upper 200 m layer. Temperature versus salinity diagrams were plotted at each station and further analyses of nitrate …

Uncertainty Contributions To Species Specific Isotope Dilution Analysis, Rob Clough Jan 2003

Uncertainty Contributions To Species Specific Isotope Dilution Analysis, Rob Clough

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Mercury speciation in solid sample matrices has been investigated using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with multicollector sector field (MCSF) and quadrupole (Q) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for species specific isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS). 199Hg enriched methylmercurychloride has been synthesised and recovered in the solid form for use as a spike material. The stability of methylmercury during the IDMS procedure was investigated using 199Hg and 13C labelled methylmercury isotopomers and ¹H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy. IntermoIecuJar exchange of the methylmercury halide counter ion was observed, the halide counter ion order of preference was l>Br>Cl. …

Cross-Shore Sediment Transport Processes On Natural Beaches And Their Relation To Sand Bar Migration Patterns, Ismael De Jesus Marino Tapia Jan 2003

Cross-Shore Sediment Transport Processes On Natural Beaches And Their Relation To Sand Bar Migration Patterns, Ismael De Jesus Marino Tapia

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

During the last two decadess everalf ield studiesh ave shown a clear pattern in the cross-shores ediment transport processes on beaches. Outside the surf zone, the stronger onshore velocities under unbroken (Stokes-type) wave crests, produce a dominant onshore sediment transport. Inside the surf zone, strong offshore-directed mean currents (undertow) drive sediments offshore. It is of great interest for the scientific community to verify further the consistency of this pattern under different morphodynamic conditions, understand the underlying physics and quantify/parameterise this behaviour in order to improve the understanding of cross-shore sediment transport and simplify the modelling of beach profile change. The …

The research spans a wide range from genetic studies of the human population of the Indian sub-continent to various agricultural …

From Violent Crime To Terrorism: The Changing Basis Of The Federal, State And Local Law Enforcement Dynamic, Daniel C. Richman Jan 2003

From Violent Crime To Terrorism: The Changing Basis Of The Federal, State And Local Law Enforcement Dynamic, Daniel C. Richman

Faculty Scholarship

Two lines of questions dominate discussions about how the nation ought to respond at home to the new (or rather newly perceived) terrorist threat: How do we ensure that information about potential terrorist activities is effectively gathered, shared, and used? And how do we ensure that the Government neither abuses the investigative authority we give it, nor demands more authority than it needs? Each line can profitably be pursued in its own terms. Yet to keep the conversations separate is to miss seeing how the very process of creating an effective domestic intelligence network may introduce a salutary level of …

Cerebrovascular accident (CV A) is the primary cause of disability in the United States. l It is estimated that 75% of those who have a CVA survive and function with multiple degrees of impairments. These impairments impact their activities of daily living in a variety of ways. One of the goals of rehabilitation is to minimize the negative effects a CVA has on the functioning of an individual and allow each person to reach his or her maximum potential. Limited research has been conducted exploring the positive outcomes of partial body weight support treadmill training (PBWSTT) in those who have …

The Effects Of Partial Body Weight Support For Gait For Patients With Neurological Dysfunction: A Case Study Approach, Larae Haas, Beth Millage, Becky Sorenson

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of partial body weight support during gait for individuals with neurological dysfunction. Body weight support (BWS) training provides a safe environment in which the individual can perform and practice mechanics of normal gait at a variety of speeds with or without body weight support, depending on the level of function. The subjects who participated in this study were community ambulators older than 20 years of age with a neurological diagnosis. Each subject was tested initially and at the conclusion of the study to compare data using a battery of balance …

Self-Perceptions Of Speech Language Pathologists-In-Training Before And After Pseudostuttering Experiences On The Telephone, Manish Rami, Joseph Kalinowski, Andrew Stuart, Michael P. Rastatter Jan 2003

Self-Perceptions Of Speech Language Pathologists-In-Training Before And After Pseudostuttering Experiences On The Telephone, Manish Rami, Joseph Kalinowski, Andrew Stuart, Michael P. Rastatter

Communication Sciences & Disorders Faculty Publications

Purpose: This survey investigated the effect of pseudostuttering experiences on self-perceptions of 29 female, graduate students enrolled in a graduate seminar in stuttering.

Method: Perceptions of self prior to, and immediately after, participation in five scripted telephone calls which contained pseudostuttering were measured via a 25-item semantic differential scale.

Results: Data showed that the participants perceived themselves as significantly more (p < 0.002) withdrawn, tense, avoiding, afraid, introverted, nervous, self-conscious, anxious, quiet, inflexible, hesitant, dull, passive, unpleasant, insecure, unfriendly, guarded, and reticent. after their pseudostuttering telephone call experiences.

Conclusions: Findings suggests that the ‘pseudostuttering’ experiences have an impact on self-perceptions and that the experience of ‘adopting the disability of a person who stutter’s’ may provide insight as to the social and emotional impact of communicative failure. …

(2003) Transforming How Teachers Teach And How Students Learn, Laurance J. Splitter Jan 2003

(2003) Transforming How Teachers Teach And How Students Learn, Laurance J. Splitter

Collected Papers of Laurance J. Splitter

For some time, I have been interested in taking the idea of the community of inquiry (COI) beyond the context of philosophy and philosophy for children, to other subject areas and learning areas. We sometimes speak in impressively general terms about transforming "the classroom" into a community of inquiry assuming, perhaps, that once the practice of collective inquiry is established in one domain (eg philosophy), it will inevitably spread to others by the community itself. Another, somewhat more provocative way of stating this claim is to say that not only can subjects other than philosophy be taught as modes or …
