Optimization Of Artificial Neural Networks In Satellite Remote Sensing Da Ta Analysis, Tiegeng Ren
Optimization Of Artificial Neural Networks In Satellite Remote Sensing Da Ta Analysis, Tiegeng Ren
Open Access Master's Theses
Satellite remote sensing data have been broadly applied in extraction of thematic land cover information. The multi-spectral classification is the mostly used method. Traditional supervised classification algorithms are in the category of statistical pattern recognition. Due to the limitations of spatial and spectral resolutions of remotely sensed data, traditional classification has always been challenged in thematic accuracy of land cover mapping. To improve the performance, new technical approaches are in demand.
Artificial Neural Network is one of the emerging approaches in multi-spectral remote sensing and multi-source spatial data handling. However, none-optimized method always met difficulties to get an ideal result. …

Nesting Willow Flycatchers Discovered At Harrison, Arkansas, William C. Holimon, Douglas A. James
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The Willow Flycatcher, Empidonax traillii (Audubon), was a newly discovered species when John James Audubon found it at Arkansas Post in 1822. The bird was fairly common in summer in prairie-scrub habitat around Arkansas at least until the 1950s. There after numbers declined until one or two individuals were found occasionally at a single site in Benton County in the late 1980s through 1990s. We found a population consisting of three nesting territories on Baker Prairie Natural Area in Harrison, Boone County, Arkansas. This represents the first confirmed nesting since 1990 and only the second since 1969. A nest with …
Perceptions Of Minorities' Criminal Involvement In Grand Rapids: Community And Media Dialogue, Rafael E. Castanon
Perceptions Of Minorities' Criminal Involvement In Grand Rapids: Community And Media Dialogue, Rafael E. Castanon
McNair Scholars Journal
This study examines media overrepresentation and its effects on community perception. The research examines the perception of racial/ethnic involvement in violent crimes in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Grand Rapids Police Department arrest reports for violent crime were dichotomized by race/ethnicity and compared to news articles reporting violent crimes found in the Grand Rapids Press to determine if a disparity exists between those data sets. To measure public perceptions, questionnaires were administered concerning racial/ethnic groups and their likelihood to commit violent crimes. The overall intention is to provide a better understanding of root causes of minority disparity within the Criminal Justice System.
Understanding Prehistoric Ceramic Technology From The Grand River Valley, Jeff Chivis
Understanding Prehistoric Ceramic Technology From The Grand River Valley, Jeff Chivis
McNair Scholars Journal
This research focused on understanding the production process of ceramic construction (technological choices of potters) during the Woodland Period in western Michigan. This ultimately provided information regarding choices not only pertaining to style but also to material choices and firing strategies of early societies. The research involved the replication of pottery sherds, which were then compared to a sample of Early Woodland, Middle Woodland, and Late Woodland sherds from sites in the Grand River valley by using petrographic analysis. These sherds were extracted from the Prison Farm (20IA58), Norton Mounds (20KT1), Spoonville (20OT1), and the Converse Mounds sites (20KT2). Technological …

Though Many Have White Skin, Their Veins Flow Of Black Blood: Afro-Argentine Culture And History During The Twentieth Century In Buenos Aires, Argentina, Erika D. Edwards
McNair Scholars Journal
Although the Afro-Argentine population continued to decline during the twentieth century, the people played an integral role in shaping Argentina’s culture through their contributions in the field of dance, literature, and religion. Unfortunately, their vibrant culture and history are often ignored and overlooked because of Argentina’s subtle efforts to whiten its population. The purpose of this project is three-fold. First, it aims to recognize the survival of the Afro-Argentine community during the twentieth century. Second, it recaptures the means used to preserve African traditions. Finally, it reveals efforts of Afro-Argentine groups such as La Fundación Africa Vive that have dedicated …

Effect Of Water Removal On Introduced Caddisflies From A Tropical Mountain Stream, Mollie D. Mcintosh, Mark Eric Benbow, Albert J. Burky
Biology Faculty Publications
Tropical island streams worldwide are being threatened by existing or proposed dams and diversions. Numerous streams of the Hawaiian Islands have diversions that remove freshwater for human use; however, little research has addressed diversion effects on aquatic insect communities in tropical streams. We studied the effect of water removal by a stream diversion on density and biomass of two introduced Trichoptera, Cheumatopsyche analis (Banks) (Hydropsychidae) and Hydroptila potosina (Buenoa- Soria) (Hydroptilidae), in Iao Stream, Maui, Hawaii, from April-August 2000. Both species seem to have multivoltine life cycles. Pooled Trichoptera (both species) biomass was significantly greater above the diversion (178.3 mg.m-2 …
Accountants' Accountability To Nonclients In Texas., Jessica P. Gomez
Accountants' Accountability To Nonclients In Texas., Jessica P. Gomez
St. Mary's Law Journal
This Comment proposes that accountants be held liable to any foreseeable user of their work product to ensure the deterrence of negligence on their part. Currently, the three main common law theories concerning whether nonclients can sue accountants for negligence are: (1) the privity rule; (2) the Restatement (Second) of Torts § 552; and (3) the foreseeability standard. Many states follow the Restatement approach entitled “Information Negligently Supplied for the Guidance of Others.” Texas imposes liability on accountants but fails to extend protections to third parties who rely upon the accuracy of financial statements. Further, Texas liability does not expose …

The Role Of Soft Money, Independent, And Coordinated Expenditures In Elections For The United States House Of Representatives., Kevin R. Spiker
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the use and utility of soft money, independent, and coordinated expenditures in elections for the U.S. House of Representatives. While much is known about the effect of hard contributions on political campaigns, very little attention has been given to the role of soft money in congressional elections. Soft money contributions are donated to political parties at the federal level and these funds are ultimately transferred to state political parties to be used for “party building†activities. Given that prior to 2002, there were no limits on the amount of soft money that …
Gis Modeling Of Desert Root Crop Maturation On The Mid-Columbia Plateau, Mary Michelle Phillips
Gis Modeling Of Desert Root Crop Maturation On The Mid-Columbia Plateau, Mary Michelle Phillips
All Master's Theses
The settlement patterns of the prehistoric inhabitants of the Columbia Plateau were choreographed to match the cadence of the seasons, with movements timed to efficiently utilize available resources. Desert roots, such as lomatium and bitterroot, provided a primary source of dietary nutrition, yet the ideal conditions for exploiting these plant resources coalesced for a very limited time in any one location. It was therefore necessary to possess an intimate knowledge of the plants' lifecycles in order to effectively plan gathering activities. In order to predict the growth patterns and maturation rates of these desert root crops, a GIS model was …

Georgia Southern University's Mentoring Administrators Program: A Program Evaluation, Gina Gibbs Williams
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
High stakes accountability in education has changed nearly everything in school leadership. In the past, principals were expected to simply hold school each day with classes running smoothly and in an orderly fashion. Rising expectations have prompted state legislatures across the United States to implement high stakes accountability systems that hold schools responsible for student achievement. The responsibility for raising student achievement rests student achievement. The responsibility for raising student achievement rests one way to cultivate and make ready new administrators for the challenges that they will face as they begin their careers.
The purpose of this study was to …

A Comparison Of Youth Participation Motives In Organized Sports, Kirsty L. Carrihill
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
Youth participation in organized physical activity has increased by more than 5 million in the last decade (Smith & Smoll, 2002). Of the 48 million youth 8 to 16 years old in the United States, 20 million participated in organized sport (Gould & Petlichkoff, 1998; Seefeldt & Ewing, 1997; Smith & Smoll, 2002). Currently, the average age for youth to begin participating in organized sports in, or outside of, school is 11 years old (Klint & Weiss, 1986; Smith & Smoll, 2002). Although participation rates have increased, there are significant numbers of youth who drop out of sport. Over one-third …
Novel Techniques For Investigating The Permeation Properties Of Environmentally-Friendly Paper Coatings: The Influence Of Structural Anisotropy On Fluid Permeation In Porous Media, Paul Bodurtha
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
In this study, we have investigated the effects of structural anisotropy of porous media on the permeation of fluids. The motivation for the work was an increased understanding of the permeation of inks into paper coatings, which often contain platey or needle-like particles, which have been aligned during the coating process. However, the findings are also relevant to other systems, such as the sub-terranean migration of fluids, including pollutants, within shale that contains particles of high aspect ratio. Mineral pigments, comprising mainly of calcium carbonate or clay, are often are applied to the surface of paper to improve optical and …
