Admissions Of A Director, Sarah C. Zearfoss Jan 2003

Admissions Of A Director, Sarah C. Zearfoss

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

The admissions process at one of the nation's most prestigious law schools is as much art as it is science. Sarah Zearfoss, Director of Admissions and Assistant Dean at the University of Michigan Law School, offers a firsthand account of the school's admissions program. In the process she answers the commonly asked question, just what do admissions committees take into account when they review an application? She describes the Law School's admissions program from a functional point of view, and explains why the concept of diversity embodies far more than race. She also refutes Justice Rehnquist's analysis in dissent in …

Teaching Critical Practice For Future Technologies, Leslie Sharpe Jan 2003

Teaching Critical Practice For Future Technologies, Leslie Sharpe

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

What are the issues when faculty wishes to teach art students critical or alternative practices with newer technologies not yet widely available to the public? Can one teach alternative practices that consider social or personal contexts when the technologies are not yet publicly available? What other issues are involved when teaching art students to do fine art with such technologies, and when not training artists to do commercial work for the communications industry or mainstream media? What does it mean for the art students who wants to use these technologies for fine art to have ideas for their use, but …

Editorial: Research, Visual Cultural Studies, Programs, Jan Jagodzinski

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This year’s journal explores a number of social issues that continue to reassert themselves on the postmodern landscape. How can social and cultural justice assert itself in arts based education? What is our responsibility to “at risk” children when it comes to a critical pedagogy? The first two essays use innovative approaches to arts based research by incorporating a critical autobiographical methodology. James Sanders and Diane Conrad, drawing their theoretical base from critical autoethnographic inquiry, attempt to examine themselves within the context of their investment as administrator, teacher and researcher.

Unromancing The Stone Of “Resistance:” In Defense Of A Continued Radical Politics In Visual Cultural Studies, Jan Jagodzinski Jan 2003

Unromancing The Stone Of “Resistance:” In Defense Of A Continued Radical Politics In Visual Cultural Studies, Jan Jagodzinski

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The question of resistance as a pleasurable activity continues to be a theme within cultural studies. This essay argues that the ideology of pleasurable resistance is precisely the way that capitalist patriarchy maintains its hegemony through seduction. By focusing mainly on the writings of John Fiske and his employment of Foucault´s power/knowledge couplet and Barthe´s appropriation of jouissance, it is argued that the discursive subject position overlooks the value of the psychoanalytic understanding of fantasy identification. It is suggested that a more radical understanding of jouissance as developed within a psychoanalytic view of the split-subject needs to be addressed (or …

Holding The Line In I Corps: The Unintended Consequences Of Mcnamara's Electronic Fence, Nathaniel R. Helms

Theses

The primary focus of this thesis is the development, implementation, and results of a multi-billion dollar electronic anti-personnel barrier that once divided North and South Vietnam during America's involvement in the Vietnam War, a conflict that pitted the strongest nation on earth against one of the weakest.

United States participation in the Vietnam War lasted from 1959 to 1975 in one degree or another and conservatively cost the world more than two million lives, among them almost 57,000 Americans, two million Vietnamese, 1.5 million Cambodians, several hundred thousand Laotians, and a smaller number of Thais, Filipinos, Australians, New Zealanders, Chinese, …

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Manganese (Mn) is an essential element and a neurotoxicant. Regulation of Mn movement across the blood–brain barrier (BBB) contributes to whether the brain Mn concentration is functional or toxic. In plasma, Mn associates with water, small molecular weight ligands and proteins. Mn speciation may influence the kinetics of its movement through the BBB. In the present work, the brain influx rates of 54Mn2+, 54Mn citrate and 54Mn transferrin (54Mn Tf) were determined using the in situ brain perfusion technique. The influx rates were compared to their predicted diffusion rates, which were determined from …

Missions Appendix, John V. York Jan 2003

Missions Appendix, John V. York

Syllabi

Missions theology begins with God's stated plan for history--the mission of God1--and may be traced by following the major statements of divine intention using the diachronic methodology of biblical theology.2 In this article, the mission of God is viewed as the blessing of all peoples through Jesus Christ. God's method to accomplish this mission is by His outbreaking presence among a covenant people. Covenant people are referred to as a Kingdom under God with a mission to bless the nations. This mission of God stands as the foundation for a missions theology.

Movements Of Mind: The Matrix, Metaphors, And Re-Imagining Education, Alison Cook-Sather Jan 2003

Movements Of Mind: The Matrix, Metaphors, And Re-Imagining Education, Alison Cook-Sather

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

Using the popular movie The Matrix to evoke both metaphors for human existence and models for teaching and learning, this article revisits arguments made by educators, philosophers, linguists, and anthropologists that metaphors govern our ways of perceiving, naming, and acting in the world, whether we are aware of this phenomenon or not. Building on this premise and through an examination of two metaphors that have dominated notions of and approaches to education in the United States, the article invites readers to make conscious the metaphors that inform our thoughts and actions, discern the "realities" we construct for ourselves and for …

Tres Vidas, Una Guerra Rafael Iznaga, Bárbara Pérez Y Gregoria Quesada Entre La Emancipación Y La Ciudadanía, Rebecca Scott

Book Chapters

In this article, Scott takes a microhistorian approach as she looks at the ways in which three Cubans of color (Rafael Iznaga, Bárbara Pérez and Gregoria Quesada), from the same rural neighborhood, sought to define and attain citizenship during and immediately after the Cuban War of Independence from 1895-1898. Juxtaposing oral and written sources, Scott shows how such evidence can be both complementary and contradictory, and how each source should be examined in light of the others.

Rafael Iznaga fought in the war as a soldier of the Liberation Army, and returned with prestige and status. While his life can …

A Practical Guide Using A Variety Of Instructional Methods For Teaching Reading To Gifted Students, Melissa Caveness Jan 2003

A Practical Guide Using A Variety Of Instructional Methods For Teaching Reading To Gifted Students, Melissa Caveness

All Graduate Projects

Gifted students spend most of their school day, if not all, learning in the regular classroom. Often, this environment is not conducive to their learning needs, and there is a lack of readily available supplemental materials that teachers can use to meet the needs of the gifted students. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to create a handbook that provides different strategies for teachers to use when teaching gifted students in the regular classroom. The project contains five thematic units that incorporate and utilize literature and comprehension strategies. This project first focuses definitions and identifiers of gifted students academically …

William Blake: An Integrated Teaching Approach, Shawn C. Gaspaire Jan 2003

William Blake: An Integrated Teaching Approach, Shawn C. Gaspaire

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to explore the usefulness of providing integrated curricula in today's contemporary classroom. The literature review illustrates that integrated approaches to teaching improve classroom engagement rates, retention, and skill level across grade levels when compared to non-integrated environments. A tenweek model using William Blake as a catalyst is presented. The integrated approach using Blake incorporates history, English, the arts, vocational arts, communication, and the technologies. Implications of integrated curriculum and William Blake are discussed.
