Regulating Clinical Research: Informed Consent, Privacy, And Irbs, Sharona Hoffman
Faculty Publications
During the past two decades, the United States has experienced dramatic developments in the area of biomedical research. Expanding budgets, augmented computer capabilities, and the Human Genome Project have all significantly enhanced research capabilities. Consequently, the number of research projects conducted in this country is ever growing, and the enrollment of an adequate number of human subjects is becoming an increasingly challenging task.
Clinical research involving human participants is governed by federal regulations that have been promulgated by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In light of the proliferation of medical …

Bodies Moving In Space: Ancient Mesoamerican Human Sculpture And Embodiment, Holly Bachand, Rosemary Joyce, Julia A. Hendon
Bodies Moving In Space: Ancient Mesoamerican Human Sculpture And Embodiment, Holly Bachand, Rosemary Joyce, Julia A. Hendon
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Judith Butler’s proposal that embodiment is a process of repeated citation of precedents leads us to consider the experiential effects of Mesoamerican practices of ornamenting space with images of the human body. At Late Classic Maya Copán, life-size human sculptures were attached to residences, intimate settings in which body knowledge was produced and body practices institutionalized. Moving through the space of these house compounds, persons would have been insistently presented with measures of their bodily decorum. These insights are used to consider the possible effects on people of movement around Formative period Olmec human sculptures, which are not routinely recovered …
Engaging Secondary School Students In Lifelong Learning, Jennifer Bryce, Graeme Withers
Engaging Secondary School Students In Lifelong Learning, Jennifer Bryce, Graeme Withers
Indigenous Education Research
A 'lifelong learning' orientation to education is seen as vital if young people are to thrive in the knowledge rich, constantly changing world of today and the immediate future. This study identifies ways that the foundations for lifelong learning can be built in secondary schools. 'Lifelong learning' is interpreted as engaging people with learning throughout all stages of their lives. Lifelong learning at secondary school level is concerned with keeping students engaged in learning, and developing in those students the characteristics that will make learning an integral and valued part of their lives when they leave school. Thus the report …

Medical Restrictive Covenants In Illinois: At The Crossroads Of Carter-Shields And Prairie Eye Center, Stuart Gimbel, Miles J. Zaremski
Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences
This article examines the history, development and treatment by Illinois courts of medical restrictive covenants. The authors highlight two recent cases from Illinois, one from the Supreme Court and the other authored by an appellate court panel. The article concludes by providing not only a forecast of how such covenants should be treated by Illinois state courts in the future, but also a pathway for the expectations of health care practitioners who wish to use restrictive covenants in their employment relationships with their colleagues.

The Influence Of Macrofaunal Burrow Spacing And Diffusive Scaling On Sedimentary Nitrification And Denitrification: An Experimental Simulation And Model Approach, Franck Gilbert, Robert C. Aller, Stefan Hulth
Journal of Marine Research
The influence of burrow spacing on sedimentary nitrification and denitrification was simulated experimentally using sediment plugs of different thicknesses immersed in aerated seawater reservoirs. Different plug thicknesses mimic different distances between oxygenated burrow centers and produce similar changes in aerobic-anaerobic reaction balances as a function of diffusive transport scaling. The thicknesses used were roughly equivalent to transport scales (interburrow spacing) that could be produced by burrow abundances of ~400 to 50,000 m-2, depending on burrow lumen radii (e.g., 0.05-1 cm). Following the exposure of anoxic sediment plugs to aerated water, an efficient aerobic nitrification zone was established within …
Variation Of Nonlocal Irrigation In A Subtidal Benthic Community, Stefan Forster, Arzhang Khalili, Jarmila Kitlar
Variation Of Nonlocal Irrigation In A Subtidal Benthic Community, Stefan Forster, Arzhang Khalili, Jarmila Kitlar
Journal of Marine Research
Irrigation, the effect of the pumping activity by benthic infauna on pore water solute distribution and fluxes, may be represented by a nonlocal irrigation function, α (units: 1/time) in the general diagenetic equation. We derived α from the distribution of a solute tracer, bromide, during laboratory incubations of sediment cores containing their natural faunal community. Sediments were sampled on 4 occasions over a period of one year from a site at 30 m depth in the southern North Sea. Fitting an irrigation function exponentially decaying with depth, we arrived at α-values ranging from 25 to >200 yr-1 at the sediment …
The Wildlands Project Outside North America, David Johns
The Wildlands Project Outside North America, David Johns
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Wildlands Project seeks to create a connected system of protected areas across North America that will ensure the survival of all native species, including top predators and wideranging species, in the context of fully functioning ecosystems. Core protected areas are designated based on the biological needs of key species and the requirements of critical ecological processes. To work they must have, or will be restored to have, those attributes traditionally ascribed to wilderness. Some critics argue that The Wildlands Project model is inapplicable to other parts of the world, especially the developing world. The inapplicability is based on nonbiological …

Sabbaticals
The purpose of my sabbatical work was to learn about resources related to mathematics and art, nature, music and architecture. These subjects appeal to a wide audience, yet their mathematical connections are often on the periphery of a mathematics student's studies. In this way I planned to increase my knowledge of mathematics but at the same time broaden my understanding of cross-disciplinary subjects.

Newcastle disease is a rapidly spreading virus that attacks domestic poultry and other birds. This NebGuide explains disease transmission, symptoms and prevention and control.
Introduction
Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is an acute, rapidly spreading viral disease that affects domestic poultry and other birds. It has a rapid onset and a mortality rate that can be as high as 100 percent. The disease is found worldwide, with the possible exception of some islands and Oceania.
Newcastle disease was first reported in 1926 in the East Indies and then in 1927 at Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, for which it is named. Newcastle disease virus …

A Philosophical Explanation Of Education Today : A Reflective Essay, Brant J. Bemus

"In one sense it is not so much the capacity for education as the necessity of education that differentiates man from the lower animals" (p. 8). This quote by Bagley (1905) summarizes his beliefs on what the foundation of education is built. Despite many changes in education since Bagley's time, the purpose of education remains constant - to provide the best opportunities for students to achieve their highest attainment and become well-rounded individuals in an ever changing society. It is the necessity of education that makes the duty of public and private education so crucial. It is our job, as …

A Simulation Application To Analyze The Utilization Of Computer Laboratories, Mehmet E. Bahadir
Graduate Research Papers
Efficiency is a widely used term in industry, education, economics and science to define the wisely use of input to achieve a certain level of output with minimum waste. In terms of material usage, efficiency is working with the optimum number of resources to provide the required service. Computer labs are one of the main facilities of modem universities. Efficient usage of computer labs in terms of utilization is one of the factors that affects the quality and performance of the education. The problem of this study is to investigate the efficiency of selected computer centers at a Midwestern university.
