Network Security Risk Assessment Modeling Tools For Critical Infrastructure Assessment, George Baker, Joseph Blandino, Samuel Redwine Jan 2003

Network Security Risk Assessment Modeling Tools For Critical Infrastructure Assessment, George Baker, Joseph Blandino, Samuel Redwine

Selected Works

The James Madison University (JMU) CIPP research team is developing Network Security Risk Assessment Modeling (NSRAM) tools that will enable the assessment of both cyber and physical infrastructure security risks. The effort is driven by the need to predict and compute the probability of adverse effects stemming from system attacks and malfunctions, to understand their consequences, and to improve existing systems to minimize these consequences. The tools are targeted at systems supporting critical infrastructures varying from individual systems to organization-wide systems, to systems covering entire geographical regions. Early work emphasizes computing systems, but systems sharing the network nature of computing …

Genetic Variability In Cotesia Davipes And Its Importance In Biological Control Of Lepidopteran Stemborers, Emmanuel Iyamulemye Niyibigira Jan 2003

Genetic Variability In Cotesia Davipes And Its Importance In Biological Control Of Lepidopteran Stemborers, Emmanuel Iyamulemye Niyibigira

All PhD Dissertations

Lepidoperan stemborers are a major constraint to increasing the production of maize and sorghum under subsistence farming conditions in sub-Saharan Africa. Classical biological control is considered as the most cost-effective form of pest management but it has not attained the desired success rate. It has been postulated that one major reason for the failures in classical biological control is related to the genetic diversity of released_ individuals of natural enemies. The aim of this study was to examine the importance of genetic variability in the establishment and performance of the parasitoid Cotesia flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) as a classical biological control …

Mate Preference: A Possible Causal Mechanism For A Moving Hybrid Zone, C. L. Bronson, Thoams C. Grubb, Jr., Gene D. Sattler, Michael J. Braun

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The study of patterns and underlying mechanisms within hybrid zones may provide insight into speciation. Black-capped (Poecile atricapillus; BC) and Carolina (P. carolinensis; CA) chickadees hybridize in an east–west band in the U.S.A. from New Jersey to Kansas. Within the past century, the Ohio portion of this hybrid zone and the CA range to the south have been moving northward while the BC range has retracted. We examined mate preference in females of both species as one possible causal mechanism for this shift. To be conservative about the nomenclature and results, the samples are referred to as either ‘BC-like’ or …

The Pseudomonas Syringae Type Iii-Secreted Protein Hopptod2 Possesses Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Activity And Suppresses Programmed Cell Death In Plants, Avelina Espinosa, Ming Guo, Vincent C. Tam, Zheng Qing Fu, James R. Alfano

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

The bacterial plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae possesses a type III protein secretion system that delivers many virulence proteins into plant cells. A subset of these proteins (called Avr proteins) is recognized by the plant’s innate immune system and triggers defences. One defence-associated response is the hypersensitive response (HR), a programmed cell death (PCD) of plant tissue. We have previously identified HopPtoD2 as a type III secreted protein from P. s. pv. tomato DC3000. Sequence analysis revealed that an N-terminal domain shared homology with Avr- PphD and a C-terminal domain was similar to protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs). We demonstrated that purified …

Experience, Culture And Reality: The Significance Of Fisher Information For Understanding The Relationship Between Alternative States Of Consciousness And The Structures Of Reality, Charles D. Laughlin, Jason C. Throop Jan 2003

Experience, Culture And Reality: The Significance Of Fisher Information For Understanding The Relationship Between Alternative States Of Consciousness And The Structures Of Reality, Charles D. Laughlin, Jason C. Throop

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The majority of the world’s cultures encourage or require members to enter alternative states of

consciousness (ASC) while involved in religious rituals. The question is, why? This paper suggests

an explanation for the culturally prescribed ASC from the view of Fisher information. It argues

from the position, first put forward by Emile Durkheim in his magnum opus, The Elementary

Forms of the Religious Life, that all religions are grounded in reality. It suggests that many of the

structural elements of cultural cosmologies are similar and that the ritual induction of ASC may

help to bring individual experience into greater accord …

Using Nonfiction Trade Books As Opposed To Textbook Instruction In A Fourth Grade Plant Science Unit, Susan J. Lorenz Jan 2003

Using Nonfiction Trade Books As Opposed To Textbook Instruction In A Fourth Grade Plant Science Unit, Susan J. Lorenz

Graduate Research Papers

In teaching elementary students I have observed that many of them show reluctance to explore science concepts. Reading for information in science textbooks, they seem unable to connect new learning with what they may already know. In science activities many do not open up to exploration.

My intent would be to motivate students to use their natural curiosity in our science classroom. A hypothesis could be formulated for the learning problems my students exhibit. There is a relationship between the choice of science reading materials used for instruction and the ability of students to demonstrate knowledge of basic plant science …

The Two Isoforms Of Rat Metallothionein Are Coordinately Regulated In Vivo, Diane M. Todd Jan 2003

The Two Isoforms Of Rat Metallothionein Are Coordinately Regulated In Vivo, Diane M. Todd

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Metallothionein (MT) is an inducible protein whose unique structure contributes to its many functions. One of MT’s functions is the detoxification of heavy metals. Cadmium (Cd), which is an environmental pollutant and a hazard to both humans and animals, is detoxified by MT. There are four known MT isoforms (MT I-IV) and this study focuses on only MT I and MT II. Even though a lot is known about the effect of Cd on MT induction little has been reported about the MT isoforms and their pattern of mRNA expression. It is the aim of this study to investigate the …

Space-Time-Event-Motion (Stem): A New Metaphor For A New Concept Based On A Triadic Model And Process Philosophy, Joseph Naimo Jan 2003

Space-Time-Event-Motion (Stem): A New Metaphor For A New Concept Based On A Triadic Model And Process Philosophy, Joseph Naimo

Philosophy Conference Papers

The disciplinary enterprises engaged in the study of consciousness now extend beyond their original paradigms providing additional knowledge toward an overall understanding of the fundamental meaning and scope of consciousness. A new transdisciplinary domain has resulted from the syncretism of several approaches bringing about a new paradigm. The background for this overarching enterprise draws from a variety of traditions. In this paper however elaboration is restricted to the quantum-mechanical account in David Bohm’s theoretical work in relation to his ideas about “active information”, “protointelligence”, and “non-locality”. This leads to an adapted version of Bohm’s thesis concerning the implicate order and …

Nafta’S Investment Chapter: Initial Thoughts About Second-Generation Rights, Charles Hendrickson Brower Ii Jan 2003

Nafta’S Investment Chapter: Initial Thoughts About Second-Generation Rights, Charles Hendrickson Brower Ii

Law Faculty Research Publications

In this Article Professor Brower argues that most observers of NAFTA's investment chapter have missed an important and surprising development: Although the treaty's text shares a philosophical affinity with civil and political rights, its application has revealed an astonishing level of support for economic and social rights (ESCRs) in North America. Professor Brower examines the practical implications of this development both for the presentation of claims in investor-state arbitration and for the better integration of ESCRs into the mainstream of international law.

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

To build a foundation for the complete genome analysis of Bombyx mori, we have constructed an EST database. Because gene expression patterns deeply depend on tissues as well as developmental stages, we analyzed many cDNA libraries prepared from various tissues and different developmental stages to cover the entire set of Bombyx genes. So far, the Bombyx EST database contains 35,000 ESTs from 36 cDNA libraries, which are grouped into ≈11,000 nonredundant ESTs with the average length of 1.25 kb. The comparison with FlyBase suggests that the present EST database, SilkBase, covers >55% of all genes of Bombyx. The …

Clinical Issues Surrounding Once-Daily Aminoglycoside Dosing In Children, Chad A. Knoderer, Julie A. Everett, William F. Buss Jan 2003

Clinical Issues Surrounding Once-Daily Aminoglycoside Dosing In Children, Chad A. Knoderer, Julie A. Everett, William F. Buss

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

Aminoglycoside antibiotics are first-line treatment for many infectious diseases in the pediatric population and are effective in adults. The traditional dosing interval in children is every 8–12 hours. Studies in adults reported equivalent efficacy and equal or less toxicity with once-daily regimens. Despite many studies in the adult population, this approach has yet to become standard practice in most pediatric hospitals. Reasons for lack of acceptance of this strategy in children include rapid aminoglycoside clearance, unknown duration of postantibiotic effect, safety concerns, and limited clinical and efficacy data.
