Mongrel Modernism: Hayashi Fumiko's Horoki And Mass Culture, William O. Gardner Jan 2003

Mongrel Modernism: Hayashi Fumiko's Horoki And Mass Culture, William O. Gardner

Japanese Faculty Works

This article examines Hayashi Fumiko's novel "Hōrōki" (Diary of a vagabond) as a personal and historical narrative of Japanese modernity. Arguing for an acknowledgment of "Hōrōki" as a modernist work, it analyzes how Hayashi positions her work with regard to the developing idea of mass culture. Through a consideration of the early mass cultural forms recorded in Hayashi's narrative, it shows how gender and regional identity contribute to the formation of a mass subject who retains the prospect of critical agency.

Toward A Criminology Of International Crime, Mark A. Drumbl Jan 2003

Toward A Criminology Of International Crime, Mark A. Drumbl

Scholarly Articles

The criminal adjudication of those who perpetrate egregious human rights violations has gained normative currency among international lawyers and rights activists. This norm has encouraged the construction of a variety of international legal institutions, specifically tribunals and courts. This Article tracks the logic of this norm and suggests that, at its root, it represents a general extension of Western municipal criminal law, and Anglo-American common law methodologies in particular, to the international context and cases of mass violence. This triggers two interrelated concerns: is this extension (1) theoretically sustainable and (2) operationally effective for adjudicating wrongdoing in all cases of …

Evaluation Of Excess 234th Activity In Sediments As An Indicator Of Food Quality For Deep-Sea Deposit Feeders, Amanda W. J. Demopoulos, Craig R. Smith, David J. Demaster, William L. Fornes Jan 2003

Evaluation Of Excess 234th Activity In Sediments As An Indicator Of Food Quality For Deep-Sea Deposit Feeders, Amanda W. J. Demopoulos, Craig R. Smith, David J. Demaster, William L. Fornes

Journal of Marine Research

Deep-sea deposit feeders selectively ingest large volumes of sediment. Knowledge of the nature of this selectivity will help to elucidate the limiting nutritional requirements and geochemical impacts of these abundant animals. Shallow-water and theoretical studies suggest that deep-sea deposit feeders should select particles rich in protein, bacterial biomass, and/or chloropigment concentrations. Recent studies indicate that deep-sea megafaunal deposit feeders exhibit strong gut enrichment of excess (xs) 234Th activity, even though 234Thxs lacks nutritional value. To explore the significance of selective ingestion of 234Thxs activity, we evaluated the correlations between 234Thxs activity and three …

Motor Control Of Locomotor Hindlimb Posture In The American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), Stephen M. Reilly, Richard W. Blob Jan 2003

Motor Control Of Locomotor Hindlimb Posture In The American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), Stephen M. Reilly, Richard W. Blob

Publications

Crocodilians are unusual among quadrupedal tetrapods in their frequent use of a wide variety of hindlimb postures, ranging from sprawling to a more erect high walk. In this study, we use synchronized kinematic videos and electromyographic recordings to test how the activity patterns of hindlimb muscles in American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis Daudin) differ between sprawling and more upright postures. Previous force platform analyses suggested that upright posture in alligators would require greater activation by hindlimb extensors to counter increases in the flexor moments exerted about joints by the ground reaction force during upright stance. Consistent with these predictions, ankle extensors …

Subtropical Dry Forest Trees With No Apparent Damage Sprout Following A Hurricane, Skip Van Bloem, Peter G. Murphy, Ariel E. Lugo Jan 2003

Subtropical Dry Forest Trees With No Apparent Damage Sprout Following A Hurricane, Skip Van Bloem, Peter G. Murphy, Ariel E. Lugo

Publications

Hurricane Georges passed over mature dry forest near Guánica, Puerto Rico in September, 1998. The trees of the dense, short-statured Guánica Forest have a multi-stemmed structure unique to the West Indies in the neo-tropics, a characteristic that has been difficult to explain. Following the hurricane, we measured sprout development below breast height on 1407 stems to assess how response to hurricane disturbance may influence dry forest structure. Basal sprouting increased 8-14 fold after Hurricane Georges. Basal sprouting was found on al- most 68% of damaged stems and, notably, on about 32% of undamaged stems. Basal sprouting was found in all …

Cache County, Utah Agricultural Landevaluation And Site Assessment Handbook, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, G. Busch Jan 2003

Cache County, Utah Agricultural Landevaluation And Site Assessment Handbook, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, G. Busch

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Urban encroachment on farmland has serious implications for the farm sector. As the county’s economic base and population has grown, important agricultural lands have been converted to urban uses. Since 1986, Cache County has lost 8,884 acres of prime and statewide important farmland - nearly 14 square miles - to urban development. The current rate of development is consuming over 600 acres of prime and statewide important farmland each year. As we plan for the future and the most cost efficient means for housing this population growth, it is important to note two things: 1) Housing is most affordable in …

The Anguish Of Snails: Native American Folklore In The West, Barre Toelken

All USU Press Publications

After a career of working and living with Native Americans and studying their traditions, Barre Toelken has written this sweeping study of Native American folklore in the West. Within a framework of performance theory, cultural worldview, and collaborative research, he examines Native American visual arts, dance, oral tradition (story and song), humor, and patterns of thinking and discovery to demonstrate what can be gleaned from Indian traditions by Natives and non-Natives alike. In the process he considers popular distortions of Indian beliefs, demystifies many traditions by showing how they can be comprehended within their cultural contexts, considers why some aspects …

Pedro Pino, or Lai-iu-ah-tsai-lu (his Zuni name) was for many years the most important Zuni political leader. He served during a period of tremendous change and challenges for his people. Born in 1788, captured by Navajos in his teens, he was sold into a New Mexican household, where he obtained his Spanish name. When he returned to Zuni, he spoke three languages and brought with him a wealth of knowledge regarding the world outside the pueblo. For decades he ably conducted Zuni foreign relations, defending the pueblo's sovereignty and lands, establishing trade relationships, interacting with foreigners-from prominent military and scientific …

Landscape Of Desire: Identity And Nature In Utah's Canyon Country, Greg Gordon Jan 2003

Landscape Of Desire: Identity And Nature In Utah's Canyon Country, Greg Gordon

All USU Press Publications

Landscape of Desire powerfully documents and celebrates a place and the evolutions that occur when human beings are intimately connected to their surroundings. Greg Gordon accomplishes this with a tapestry of writing that interweaves land use history, natural history, experiential education, and personal reflection. He tracks the geomorphology of southern Utah as well as the creatures and plants his student group encounters, the history lessons (planned and unplanned), the trials and joys of gathering so many individuals into a cohesive will, and his own personal epiphanies, restraints, insights, and disillusionments.

A Comparison Of U.S. And Canadian Consumers' Willingness To Pay For Red-Meat Traceability, David L. Dickinson, Jill E. Hobbs, Deevon Bailey Jan 2003

A Comparison Of U.S. And Canadian Consumers' Willingness To Pay For Red-Meat Traceability, David L. Dickinson, Jill E. Hobbs, Deevon Bailey

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Auction experiments at locations in the U.S. and Canada are used to determine consumers' willingness to pay for red-meat traceability and other enhanced food characteristics. Consumers in both countries are found to be willing to pay a positive amount for traceability, but would pay even more if traceability were bundled with other characteristics such as animal welfare or enhanced food safety. The results suggest a larger Canadian market for traceability, on a percentage basis, for beef than in the U.S.

Willingness-To-Pay For Information: Experimental Evidence On Product Traceability From The U.S.A., Canada, The U.K., And Japan, David L. Dickenson, Deevon Bailey Jan 2003

Willingness-To-Pay For Information: Experimental Evidence On Product Traceability From The U.S.A., Canada, The U.K., And Japan, David L. Dickenson, Deevon Bailey

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Traceable product systems provide a tool to track the inputs of a final good throughout the entire production chain. This tool can provide valuable information to consumers on verifiable characteristics of the product, can improve the speed of product recall, and can help identify areas of inefficiency in the product chain. Recent examples of traceable systems include those used in the diamond, lumber, and food industries. This article reports results from a case study on traceability using Vickrey auctions to generate willingness-to-pay (WTP) data for traceability and related product characteristics. Specifically, we examine WTP for traceable meat, which is a …

Galway Arts Festival, 2003: Focusing On Home, Still Delighting, Christie L. Fox

English Faculty Publications

For twenty-six years the Galway Arts Festival has “morphed” the city of Galway into its natural logical conclusion: the city already boasts a young, artistic community, but for two weeks each summer, the festival brings the spotlight and the crowds to Galway for a celebration of the arts. Of late, however, the festival has suffered from decreased government expenditures on the arts—as have all the arts in Ireland. Recent festivals have been far more subdued than the extravagant Millennial Festival in 1999, during which the city teemed with outdoor events and more than one hundred thousand people gathered to watch …

The Star Quilt: A Symbol Of Lakota History And Worldviews, Bonnie Lou Mcjennett Jan 2003

The Star Quilt: A Symbol Of Lakota History And Worldviews, Bonnie Lou Mcjennett

Theses Digitization Project

When the United States government and troops attempted to destroy the Lakota culture by killing the buffalo, placing the Lakota on reservation, and forcing the Lakota to adopt European-Aemrican attitudes and behaviors, Lakota women preserved elements of their culture by symbolically sewing Lakota history and worldviews into the Star Quilt.

Effects Of Controlled Dog Hunting On Movements Of Female White-Tailed Deer, Christopher E. Comer Jan 2003

Effects Of Controlled Dog Hunting On Movements Of Female White-Tailed Deer, Christopher E. Comer

Faculty Publications

Understanding the responses of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) to controlled dog hunting can aid in the effective implementation of canine-assisted population management strategies. We examined the 24-h diel movements of 13 radio-collared female deer exposed to dog hunting on the Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, South Carolina, where regulated dog hunting has occurred since 1965. We compared diel home range size, rate of travel, and distance between extreme diel locations before, during, and after hunts from 14 September-14 December 2002. Die1 home range size (F2,91= 7.71, P < 0.001) and distance between extreme diel locations (F2,9l= 6.78, P = 0.002) on hunt day were greater than 10-day pre- and …

Relationships Between Human Auditory Cortical Structure And Function, Deborah A Hall, Heledd C Hart, Ingrid Johnsrude Jan 2003

Relationships Between Human Auditory Cortical Structure And Function, Deborah A Hall, Heledd C Hart, Ingrid Johnsrude

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

The human auditory cortex comprises multiple areas, largely distributed across the supratemporal plane, but the precise number and configuration of auditory areas and their functional significance have not yet been clearly established. In this paper, we discuss recent research concerning architectonic and functional organisation within the human auditory cortex, as well as architectonic and neurophysiological studies in non-human species, which can provide a broad conceptual framework for interpreting functional specialisation in humans. We review the pattern in human auditory cortex of the functional responses to various acoustic cues, such as frequency, pitch, sound level, temporal variation, motion and spatial location, …

Buddhist Perspectives And Human Communication, Rueyling Chuang, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2003

Buddhist Perspectives And Human Communication, Rueyling Chuang, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This paper examines the connection between Buddhist essential teachings and human communication in the East Asian context. The essential Buddhist essential teachings, including the perception of reality, living the present moment and mindfulness, compassion, the four noble truths, and the six paramitas are first delineated. The paper then analyzes how these Buddhist teachings influence East Asian communication behaviors from five perspectives: ontological assumptions, communication ethics, communication behaviors, relationship development, and rhetorical communication. It is concluded that although Buddhist teachings show great impact on the life of East Asians, the influence of other religions and thoughts should not be ignored.

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

On February 19, 1942, approximately ten weeks after Japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt approved Executive Order 9066, which authorized the removal of all people of Japanese descent from vulnerable areas of the United States’ west coast. Meant as a security measure to protect the dams, power plants, harbors, railroads, and airports from spies who would attempt to compromise America’s vulnerable infrastructure, this order eventually led to the complete removal of all Japanese from Arizona, California, Oregon, and Washington, relocating 120,000 people by mid-1942 (Only What xi-xii). Such actions …
