Conjugated Linoleic Acid Does Not Improve Insulin Tolerance In Mice, Kimberly M Hargrave, Michael J. Azain, Stephen D. Kachman, Jess Miner
Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications
Objective: To determine if the addition or removal of dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) would alter insulin tolerances in mice from two genetic lines.
Research Methods and Procedures: High metabolic rate (MH) and low metabolic rate (ML) mice were assigned to consume 1) a control diet ad libitum, 2) a control diet at a restricted intake, or 3) a diet containing 1% CLA ad libitum. After 9 weeks, an insulin tolerance test was conducted, and a portion of the mice were killed. All remaining mice consumed the control diet ad libitum. Insulin tolerance tests were conducted 11 and 32 days …

Genes, Parents And Assisted Reproductive Technologies: Mistakes, Race, Sex, And Law, Leslie Bender
Genes, Parents And Assisted Reproductive Technologies: Mistakes, Race, Sex, And Law, Leslie Bender
College of Law - Faculty Scholarship
In December 1998 a woman gave birth to twins, one of whom was European-American and one of whom was African-American, as a result of an embryo mix-up that occurred at an infertility clinic where she was receiving treatments. The genetic progenitors of the mistakenly implanted embryo challenged the birth mother's rights to one of the twins. They won their New York state court lawsuit, ultimately preventing the birth mother from even having visitation with her son. This essay examines the impact of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) mistakes on the legal analysis of parenthood (in particular maternity), offers a systematic critique …

G03-1510 Using Burrow Builders For Pocket Gopher Control, Dallas R. Virchow, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Bruce Anderson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Pocket gophers spend nearly their entire lives underground and may only appear aboveground when they excavate soil to the surface or when they disperse to new areas. Each animal moves tons of soil during a year and creates dozens of mounds, sometimes in the span of a few days.
This NebGuide discusses how to use tractor-drawn mechanical bait applications to manage pocket gophers.

G03-1515 Sampling And Analyzing Feed For Fungal (Mold) Toxins (Mycotoxins), Michael P. Carlson, Steven M. Ensley
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Mycotoxins are chemicals produced by fungi (molds) under certain conditions. They are not essential for fungal growth or reproduction, and are toxic to animals or humans. They are naturally present in feed and cannot always be avoided.
The purposes of this NebGuide are to provide information about sampling feeds to detect the presence of mycotoxins in them and about how feeds may be analyzed for mycotoxins.
Ecological Games In Space And Time: The Distribution And Abundance Of Antarctic Krill And Penguins, Suzanne Alonzo, Paul Switzer, Marc Mangel
Ecological Games In Space And Time: The Distribution And Abundance Of Antarctic Krill And Penguins, Suzanne Alonzo, Paul Switzer, Marc Mangel
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
The distribution and abundance of organisms are affected by behaviors, such as habitat selection, foraging, and reproduction. These behaviors are driven by interactions within and between species, environmental conditions, and the biology of the species in-volved. Although extensive theoretical work has explored predator–prey dynamics, these models have not considered the impact of behavioral plasticity and life-history trade-offs on predicted patterns. We apply a modeling method that allows the consideration of a spatial, dynamic ecological game between predators and prey using a life-history perspec-tive. As an illustrative example, we model the habitat selection of Antarctic krill and penguins during the time …

Grief Counseling With Children And Adolescents, Megan Funke
Graduate Research Papers
There are many causes for the grief children and adolescents suffer in their lives. No matter what the cause, they will need someone to help them deal with their grief and develop the necessary coping skills to live a normal live. This paper discusses how school counselors can help children and adolescents learn to deal with their grief in a healthy manner and develop strong and lasting coping skills.

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Postweaning growth, feed efficiency, and carcass traits were analyzed on 1,422 animals obtained by mating F1 cows to F1 (Belgian Blue X British breeds) or Charolais sires. Cows were obtained from mating Hereford, Angus, and U.S. Meat Animal Research Center III ( ¼ Hereford, ¼ Angus, ¼ Pinzgauer, and ¼ Red Poll) dams to Hereford or Angus (British breeds), Tuli, Boran, Brahman, or Belgian Blue sires. Breed groups were fed in replicated pens and slaughtered serially in each of 2 yr. Postweaning average daily gain; live weight; hot carcass weight; fat depth; longissimus area; estimated kidney, pelvic, and …

Theory And Application Of Genome-Based Approaches To Improve The Quality And Value Of Beef, Timothy P.L. Smith, R. Mark Thallman, Eduardo Casas, Steven D. Shackelford, Tommy L. Wheeler, Mohammad Koohmaraie
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
The science of genome research in livestock has been the focus of substantial worldwide efforts over the last decade, resulting in the development of a genetic map for cattle and its use to identify chromosomal segments carrying genes affecting production traits. Variations in individual genes having a major impact on phenotypes in cattle, such as alleles causing double-muscling and black/red coat colour, have been identified in the process, but the majority of the loci remain unknown except for their approximate position in the cattle genome and the relative impact of variation on the trait. Approaches to fulfil the promise of …
Growth And Pubertal Development In Brahman-, Boran-, Tuli-, Belgian Blue-, Hereford- And Angus-Sired F1 Bulls, D. D. Lunstra, L. V. Cundiff
Growth And Pubertal Development In Brahman-, Boran-, Tuli-, Belgian Blue-, Hereford- And Angus-Sired F1 Bulls, D. D. Lunstra, L. V. Cundiff
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Growth and testicular development between 7 and 15 mo of age were evaluated in bulls produced by mating sires of six breeds (Hereford, Angus, Belgian Blue, Brahman, Boran, and Tuli) to Angus, Hereford, and U.S. Meat Animal Research Center III (four-breed composite) cows. At 12 mo of age, Angus- and Hereford-sired bulls had the heaviest body weight (P < 0.08 to 0.001), whereas Brahman- and Belgian Blue-sired bulls were intermediate, and Boran- and Tuli-sired bulls weighed the least. Bulls sired by European breeds grew more rapidly after weaning (P < 0.01) than did Brahman-, Boran-, and Tuli-sired bulls, and these differences in growth rate were maintained through 15 mo of age, indicating that offspring of heat-adapted sire breeds (Brahman, Boran, and Tuli) have lower postweaning rates of gain, particularly during winter months, than do offspring of nonheat adapted sire breeds. Testis size was smaller initially (P < 0.01) and remained smaller in offspring of heat-adapted sire breeds through yearling age. By 15 mo of age, testis size was largest (P < 0.06 to 0.001) in Angus-sired bulls and had become similar among Hereford-, Brahman-, Boran- and Belgian Blue-sired bulls but remained smaller (P < 0.02 to 0.001) in Tulisired bulls. Thus, offspring of heat-adapted sire breeds had delayed testicular development compared with that of nonheat adapted sire breeds, particularly through yearling age. At puberty, Angus-sired bulls were 23 to 82 d younger (P < 0.05 to 0.001) than all other sire breeds except Hereford, and Brahman-sired bulls were older at puberty (P < 0.05 to 0.001) than were bulls of all other sire breeds except Boran. Testis size at puberty was quite similar among breeds of bulls (scrotal circumference = 27.9 ± 0.1 cm) despite large breed differences in age, body weight, and hip height. Thus, measurement of yearling testis size was a reliable indicator of age at puberty among widely divergent breeds of bulls. In addition, the lower postweaning rates of gain and the smaller and slower testicular development in offspring of heat-adapted sire breeds should be noted by cattle producers considering use of such breeds in crossbreeding and breed improvement programs.

Molecular Cloning And Endometrial Expression Of Porcine Amphiregulin, Jong G. Kim, Jeffrey L. Vallet, Ronald K. Christenson
Molecular Cloning And Endometrial Expression Of Porcine Amphiregulin, Jong G. Kim, Jeffrey L. Vallet, Ronald K. Christenson
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
The porcine amphiregulin gene was previously reported to be within the quantitative trait locus (QTL) for uterine capacity on chromosome 8. Because amphiregulin stimulates cell proliferation, the amphiregulin gene might be responsible for this QTL. The objectives of this study were to clone amphiregulin cDNA and compare endometrial expression of its mRNA in pregnant Meishan (M) and White composite (WC) pigs. We obtained two amphiregulin cDNAs, one with 1,221 bp and another with 1,109 bp. The 112 bp difference corresponded to exon 5 of the human amphiregulin gene, which codes for the cytoplasmic domain. Endometrial mRNA expression of amphiregulin was …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
The objectives of the present study were to determine how varying frequency of LH pulses as controlled by varying treatments with progesterone (P4) in cattle would affect: (1) concentration of steroid hormones and activity of insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs) in the ovarian follicular fluid and blood plasma, and (2) duration of persistence of largest ovarian follicles. There were four treatment groups (n = 7 per group) and a control group (n = 5) of mature, non-lactating beef cows.Treatments were: (1) two progesterone releasing intravaginal devices (PRIDs) for 16 days (2PRID); (2) a half PRID for 16 …

Germ Cell Development In Meishan And White Composite Gilts, Susan A. Mccoard, Thomas H. Wise, J. Joe Ford
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
This study compared dynamics of the germ cell population in two swine breeds that differ in prolifacy, White Composite (WC) and Meishan (MS), during fetal and neonatal life and in mature sows. Germ cell populations developed in a similar pattern in these two diverse breeds during fetal life. Maximal germ cell number was observed at 90 days postcoitum (dpc) in both WC and MS gilts, and substantial oogonial apoptosis was evident thereafter with approximately 30% of maximal numbers present at 25 days postpartum (dpp). Neither gilt nor sow germ cell number was correlated with maternal ovulation rate. Postnatal MS gilts …
