Is Marriage Obsolete?, Lynn D. Wardle
Is Marriage Obsolete?, Lynn D. Wardle
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
Is legal marriage obsolete? Wardle thinks not. In order to understand why not, it is necessary first to grasp the significance of the focus of the discussion on the legal status of marriage. As this Introduction suggests, lack of legal marriage status does not prevent families and communities from treating couples as married nor does the law forbid couples from voluntarily providing each other "marital benefits." Nevertheless, whether marriage is obsolete at the beginning of the twenty-first century is an important question. This article analyzes four dimensions of that question.

A Piece Of Gum On The Kitchen Table, Livvy King
e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing
I am at the kitchen table. “Don’t tell anyone, you promise?” I look into my best friend’s eyes, which are the size of large grapes, filled with confusion and sorrow, but yet that “I can’t wait to tell someone” look.
Livvy King (Olivia Katherine King) grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. She is a sophomore lacrosse player here at JMU currently majoring in SMAD.

Indiscernability Skepticism, Steven Luper
Philosophy Faculty Research
Ideally, our account of knowledge would help us to understand the appeal of (and flaws in) skepticism,2 while remaining consistent with our ‘intuitions,’ and supporting epistemic principles that seem eminently plausible. Of course, we don’t always get what we want; we may not be able to move from intuitions and principles to an account that fully squares with them. As a last resort, we may have to move in the other direction, and give up intuitions or principles that are undermined by an otherwise compelling account of knowledge, so as to achieve ‘reflective equilibrium.’3 But last resorts come …

Breeding Season Avifauna Of Prairie Dog Colonies And Non-Colonized Areas In Shortgrass Prairie, Stephen L. Winter, Jack Cully Jr., Jeffrey Pontius
Breeding Season Avifauna Of Prairie Dog Colonies And Non-Colonized Areas In Shortgrass Prairie, Stephen L. Winter, Jack Cully Jr., Jeffrey Pontius
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Avian assemblages of black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies were compared to those present at two types of non-colonized grassland, during the breeding season, in southwestern Kansas and southeastern Colorado. Relative abundances were quantified in 1996 during a period of drought and in 1997 during a period of above average precipitation. We detected fewer bird species at all sites in 1996 than in 1997, and the total number of bird species detected on prairie dog colonies was lower than that detected on both types of non-colonized areas during both years. Homed larks (Eremophila alpestris) had higher …
Final Environment Impact Statement: Double-Crested Cormorant Management In The United States, Shauna Hanisch, Brian Millsap
Final Environment Impact Statement: Double-Crested Cormorant Management In The United States, Shauna Hanisch, Brian Millsap
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Populations of Double-crested Cormorants have been increasing rapidly in many parts of the U.S. since the mid-1970s. This abundance has led to increased conflicts, both real and perceived, with various biological and socioeconomic resources, including recreational fisheries, other birds, vegetation, and hatchery and commercial aquaculture production. This document describes and evaluates six alternatives (including the proposed action) for the purposes of reducing conflicts associated with cormorants, enhancing the flexibility of natural resource agencies to deal with cormorant conflicts, and ensuring the long-term conservation of cormorant populations. There are four chapters that make up the critical components of an Environmental Impact …

Status Assessment And Conservation Plan For The Western Burrowing Owl In The United States, David S. Klute, Loren W. Ayers, Michael T. Green, William H. Howe, Stephanie L. Jones, Jiill A. Shaffer, Steven R. Sheffield, Tara S. Zimmerman
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The Western Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) is a grassland specialist distributed throughout w. North America, primarily in open areas with short vegetation and bare ground in desert, grassland, and shrub-steppe environments. Burrowing Owls are dependent on the presence of fossorial mammals (primarily prairie dogs and ground squirrels), whose burrows are used for nesting and roosting. Burrowing Owls are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in the United States and Mexico. They are listed as Endangered in Canada and Threatened in Mexico. They are considered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to be a Bird …
A Fourth Grade Balanced Literacy Curriculum, Melissa Daly
A Fourth Grade Balanced Literacy Curriculum, Melissa Daly
Honors Capstones
Children come from all different socioeconomic backgrounds, past educational experiences, and levels of parental involvement. Each and every child will be at a unique literacy level with differences spanning in reading comprehension, word analysis, use of reading strategies, written communication, and other key areas. Education tends to follow "hot topics" and trends of research, but a balanced reading approach to literacy will continue to be vital in reaching the spectrum of students. Research was conducted through both a literary review of educational resources and a sixteen week student teaching experience to construct four individual units for use in a fourth …

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Students In The Classroom : An Overview Of Strategies And Implications For Educators, Emily Olson
Graduate Research Papers
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is a very serious disease that is affecting more and more students in schools across America each year. Each of these students with FAS have different levels of severity of the disease and individual needs, but there are general and universal interventions and strategies that can be used by educators when working in the schools with these students. The following is an overview of some of these interventions and strategies that can be used with FAS students. Also included are implications for school psychologists and other educators for development and education in this area to better …

In Defense Of Social Justice: From Global Transformation To Local Resistance, Donna Chollett
In Defense Of Social Justice: From Global Transformation To Local Resistance, Donna Chollett
Anthropology Publications
The global transformations that enveloped Latin America over the past decade resulted in uneven consequences for diverse social groups. Scholars witness an increasing tension between a macroeconomic agenda concerned with profitability and local community access to employment and sustenance. As neoliberal reforms intensify Latin America's integration into the world economy, they may adversely impact local communities. Should local people lose their ability to obtain basic rights, will they be able to effectively challenge the neoliberal model? In the absence of more adequate attention to social justice, it is probable that occurrences of local resistance in defense of these rights will …

Blurred Relationships: The Factual Fiction Of John Edgar Wideman, Melissa Bakeman Hartmann
Theses Digitization Project
Control is a central issue in any text: does the author's intention or the reader's interpretation better explain the resulting meaning of the text? This question has long been the subject of debate among textual theorists; this essay proposes a middle ground, namely that the author and the reader engage in a collaborative effort to make meaning in a text.
