Not So Rare: Errors Of Metabolism During The Neonatal Period, Sandra Banta-Wright, Robert D. Steiner Jan 2003

Not So Rare: Errors Of Metabolism During The Neonatal Period, Sandra Banta-Wright, Robert D. Steiner

Faculty Publications - College of Nursing

During the neonatal period, the diagnosis of an error of metabolism (EM) was once thought to portend a poor prognosis or lethality. Over the past two decades, the prognosis of many EMs has changed. The critical aspect of the metabolic evaluation in a sick newborn is to rapidly identify whether there may be a metabolic problem. If there is a metabolic problem, the goal is to minimize the sequelae of the specific disorder. This review will explore how to approach and evaluate a newborn suspected of having an EM. A discussion of clinical and laboratory findings that often accompany EM …

Sustainable Communities And Health Inequalities, Pierre Horwitz, Neil Drew, Neil Thomson, Meredith Green

Sciences Conference Papers

The goal of the Sustainable Communities Network is to seek effective interventions that address health inequalities in rural, remote and Indigenous communities through sustainable development and supporting sustainable communities. The Network is part of the Health Inequalities Research Collaboration, now known as the Health Inequalities Ministerial Advisory Committee, a Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing initiative. Its goal is to enhance Australia’s knowledge of the causes of and effective responses to health inequalities, and to promote vigorously the application of this evidence to reduce health inequalities in Australia. This Committee was established in response to the increasing concern for health …

A New Distributional Checklist Of Minnesota Fishes, With Comments On Historical Occurrence, Jay T. Hatch, Konrad P. Schmidt, Dann P. Siems, James C. Underhill, Robert A. Bellig, Richard A. Baker

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Historical documents, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources stream surveys, and the 66,000 record distributional database of the James Ford Bell Museum of Natural History (1879-2002) were used to produce a field-usable checklist of the 160 fish species known from Minnesota waters and waters shared with its boundary states and Canadian provinces. The checklist includes distribution by eight major drainages, the conservation status for each species, and reference to nomenclatural changes over the past 20 years. Fishes are arranged according to the latest interpretations of phylogenetic relationships among species and supraspecific taxa. New distributional information is presented for six species introduced …

Transformations

Scholars' Day was established in 1997 and is a day-long conference devoted to showcasing the wide array of scholarship, research and creative activities occurring on campus. In 2012, a new emphasis on student research lead to a name change to Transformations: A Student Research and Creativity Conference. This event focuses on student research, which is defined as an original investigation or creative activity through the primary efforts of a student or group of students. The work should show problem-solving skills and demonstrate new conceptual outcomes.

Alteration Of Pulmonary Immunity To Listeria Monocytogenes By Diesel Exhaust Particles (Deps). Ii. Effects Of Deps On T-Cell-Mediated Immune Responses In Rats., Xue-Jun Yin, Rosana Schafer, Jane Y C Ma, James M. Antonini, Jenny R. Roberts, David N. Weissman, Paul D. Siegel, Joseph K H Ma Jan 2003

Alteration Of Pulmonary Immunity To Listeria Monocytogenes By Diesel Exhaust Particles (Deps). Ii. Effects Of Deps On T-Cell-Mediated Immune Responses In Rats., Xue-Jun Yin, Rosana Schafer, Jane Y C Ma, James M. Antonini, Jenny R. Roberts, David N. Weissman, Paul D. Siegel, Joseph K H Ma

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Previously, we showed that diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) suppressed pulmonary clearance of Listeria monocytogenes (Listeria) and inhibited the phagocytosis of alveolar macrophages and their response to Listeria in the secretion of interleukin (IL)-1 beta, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and IL-12. In this report we examined the effects of DEPs and/or Listeria on T-cell development and secretion of IL-2, IL-6, and interferon (IFN)-gamma. We exposed Brown Norway rats to clean air or DEPs at 50 or 100 mg/m3 for 4 hr by nose-only inhalation and inoculated with 100,000 Listeria. Lymphocytes in the lung-draining lymph nodes were isolated at 3 and 7 …

Alteration Of Pulmonary Immunity To Listeria Monocytogenes By Diesel Exhaust Particles (Deps). I. Effects Of Deps On Early Pulmonary Response, Xue-Jun Yin, Rosana Schafer, Jane Y C Ma, James M. Antonini, David D. Weissman, Paul D. Siegel, Mark W. Barger, Jenny R. Roberts, Joseph K-H Ma

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

It has been hypothesized that diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) aggravate pulmonary bacterial infection by both innate and cell-mediated immune mechanisms. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the effects of DEP exposure on the functions of alveolar macrophages (AMs) and lymphocytes from lung-draining lymph nodes using a rat Listeria monocytogenes infection model. In the present study, we focused on the effects of DEP exposure on AM functions, including phagocytic activity and secretion of proinflammatory cytokines. The Listeria infection model was characterized by an increase in neutrophil count, albumin content, and acellular lactate dehydrogenase activity in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid at …

Employer And Employee Rights And Responsibilities In A Networked Office, Ronald Tidd, Nancy Graber Pigeon Jan 2003

Employer And Employee Rights And Responsibilities In A Networked Office, Ronald Tidd, Nancy Graber Pigeon

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

Internet-connectivity is having a profound impact on the workplace. Employees use it to access data and information from global sources, communicate with others instantaneously regardless of physical proximity, work anytime, anywhere, so long as they have a digital device connected to the Internet. Alternatively, the technology can be used to subject coworkers to objectionable material, violate workers' privacy, and convey the appearance of working when actually abusing Internet resources. This article discusses the existing laws regarding employee usage of an employer's Internet resources and employer monitoring of that usage. Thus, it provides a foundation for understanding a body of law …

Optimism And Pessimism In Children, Shirley M. Yates

Shannon Research Press

Areas of learning where performance is measured through systematic and responsible assessment can contribute to the conceptualisation and valuing of art education through the provision of evidence of learning and development of artistic skills. There is a need for measurement to be undertaken in assessment in art production, on the basis of a shared symbol system, that allows for detailed classifications of visual art works. The aim of this study was to improve validity, reliability and credibility in measuring student performance in art production, and thereby increase the positive impact of assessment in the visual arts discipline.

There Is No Pperiphery: Globalising Culture And The Cinematographic Language Of Cultural Mediation In Modern European Film, Sascha Harris Jan 2003

There Is No Pperiphery: Globalising Culture And The Cinematographic Language Of Cultural Mediation In Modern European Film, Sascha Harris

Conference Papers

The paper investigates the various narrative and cinematographic strategies employed in Pasolini's 'The Gospel According to St Matthew' (1964), Tarkovsy's 'Andrei Rublev' (1966) and Kieslowski's 'A Short Film about Love' (1988) to correct and undermine a decentred representation which is structured around power-informed centre-periphery relations. It discusses the issue of assumed centrality and modern alienation through instrumentalised, detached perception.
