Growth Characteristics, Sex Inversion And Mortality Rates Of Striped Sea Bream, Lithognathus Mormyrus L., In İskenderun Bay, Mustafa Türkmen, İhsan Akyurt

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The total length of examined samples of striped sea bream in İskenderun Bay ranged from 9.1 to 27.7 cm. The length-weight relationship constants for males (a = 0.0112, b = 3.042) and females (a = 0.0105, b = 3.069), showed no significant difference from isometric growth (P < 0.05). Von Bertalanffy growth parameters in length were L_{\infinity} = 26.55 cm, K = 0.203 y^{-1} and t_o = -1.81 y for males and L_{\infinity} = 32.64 cm, K = 0.136 y^{-1} and t_o = -2.12 y for females. Sex inversion occurred at lengths between 11.2 and 22.9 cm in age groups I-VI. Males were observed up to a length of 22.8 cm. Total, natural and fishing mortality rates were Z = 1.15 y^{-1}, M = 0.48 y^{-1} and F = 0.67 y^{-1} respectively. The exploitation rate of E = 0.60 indicates that the population is being heavily exploited. Reproductive activity of striped sea bream in İskenderun Bay took place between the second half of April and early August, with the greatest intensity in May. Lengths at first maturity were 13.4 cm for males and 13.9 cm for females.

The Effects Of Salinity On Postlarval Growth And Survival Of Penaeus Semisulcatus (Decapoda: Penaeidae), H. İbrahi̇m Soyel, Meti̇n Kumlu Jan 2003

The Effects Of Salinity On Postlarval Growth And Survival Of Penaeus Semisulcatus (Decapoda: Penaeidae), H. İbrahi̇m Soyel, Meti̇n Kumlu

Turkish Journal of Zoology

P. semisulcatus post-larvae (PLs) had higher survival and better growth at high rather than low salinities between PL20 and PL60. Final survivals at high salinities (30-40 ppt) (19-23%) were significantly higher than those (3-12%) below 25 ppt (P 0.05). A rise in salinity resulted in an increase in the biomass from 0.020 g at 10 ppt to 0.317 g at 40 ppt (P < 0.05). Optimum salinity for the nursery culture of P. semisulcatus PLs appeared to be about 40 ppt at 28 °C. Hence, the results of this study demonstrate that P. semisulcatus inhabiting the Mediterranean Sea is not a good candidate for culture in waters of low salinity.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Seasonal changes in the composition, abundance and biomass of zooplankton in the seas of the Mediterranean basin (the Mediterranean, Black and Azov seas) have been reviewed using our own data and data from the literature. In the deep-water central regions of the seas, the seasonal cycle of zooplankton abundance is characterised by one maximum occurring in spring or summer. In the coastal regions, two to three peaks (spring, summer and autumn) exist for the zooplankton abundance. The amplitude of seasonal fluctuations in abundance for the coastal zone as a rule is much wider than for the deep-water regions. In both …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Glutathione-S-transferase (GST) has been reported to play an important role in the detoxification of several chemical compounds, including pesticides. Organophosphate pesticides are potent inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase (AChE). The present study was conducted to assess the in vivo effects of the organophosphate pesticide malathion on the activity of GST and AChE and the protein levels of different organs in neonatal rats. GST activity increased approximately two-fold in adult female rats fed malathion, whereas AChE activity decreased less than 20% of the control in the liver. Similarly, liver and heart GST activities (0.14 and 0.035 U/mg protein, respectively) were also increased approximately …

Cloning Of A Salivary Gland Metalloprotease And Characterization Of Gelatinase And Fibrin(Ogen)Lytic Activities In The Saliva Of The Lyme Disease Tick Vector Ixodes Scapularis, Ivo M.B. Francischetti, Thomas N. Mather, José M.C. Ribeiro Jan 2003

Ribeiro

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The full-length sequence of tick salivary gland cDNA coding for a protein similar to metalloproteases (MP) of the reprolysin family is reported. The Ixodes scapularis MP is a 488 amino acid (aa) protein containing pre- and pro-enzyme domains, the zinc-binding motif HExxHxxGxxH common to metalloproteases, and a cysteine-rich region. In addition, the predicted amino-terminal sequences of I. scapularis MPs were found by Edman degradation of PVDF-transferred SDS/PAGE-separated tick saliva proteins, indicating that these putative enzymes are secreted. Furthermore, saliva has a metal-dependent proteolytic activity towards gelatin, fibrin(ogen), and fibronectin, but not collagen or laminin. Accordingly, I. scapularis saliva has a …

A Curse And A Gift, Louisa Tangula

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

He stands in the dark, lingering. Always lingering. Faceless, but his cold, menacing eyes illuminate from the depth of the abyss.

N'hawa Louisa Tangula reports that "When Professor.Storey gave us this assignment, I knew immediately what I wanted to write about. Death. For three years, a void filled my heart as I fought to accept death as an integral part of life. Losing not one but four of my loved ones in such a short time span, sent me into a state of bedlam. At first I was in denial, then I began to ask why?

Conversations with my mum …

Content And Meaning In Abstract Animation, Pamela Turner

Kinetic Imaging Publications and Presentations

Talking about the content and meaning of abstract animation, for the practitioner or enthusiast, is like discussing why one eats chocolate or why we stand at the edge of the ocean, experiencing the sensation of the sand being sucked out from under our feet by the pull of the receding wave. Or why listening to a beautiful adagio can create such a stirring response. These experiences stand for themselves and need no explanation.

For the uninitiated, or the viewer who has little to no encounter with abstract animation, however, these moving images can be initially disconcerting and hard to understand. …

Efficient Targeting Of Protein Antigen To The Dendritic Cell Receptor Dec-205 In The Steady State Leads To Antigen Presentation On Major Histocompatibility Complex Class I Products And Peripheral Cd8+ T Cell Tolerance, Laura C. Bonifaz, David P. Bonnyay, Karsten Mahnke Jan 2003

Bonnyay, Karsten Mahnke

Publications

To identify endocytic receptors that allow dendritic cells (DCs) to capture and present antigens on major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I products in vivo, we evaluated DEC-205, which is abundant on DCs in lymphoid tissues. Ovalbumin (OVA) protein, when chemically coupled to monoclonal αDEC-205 antibody, was presented by CD11c+ lymph node DCs, but not by CD11c- cells, to OVA-specific, CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Receptor-mediated presentation was at least 400 times more efficient than unconjugated OVA and, for MHC class I, the DCs had to express transporter of antigenic peptides (TAP) transporters. When αDEC-205:OVA was injected …
