Age And Growth Estimates Of The Winter Skate (Leucoraja Ocellata) In The Western Gulf Of Maine, James A. Sulikowski, Michael D. Morin, Seung H. Suk, William Huntting Howell

Biological Sciences

The northwest Atlantic population of thorny skates (Amblyraja radiata) inhabits an area that ranges from Greenland and Hudson Bay, Canada, to South Carolina. Despite such a wide range, very little is known about most aspects of the biology of this species. Recent stock assessment studies in the northeast United States indicate that the biomass of the thorny skate is below the threshold levels mandated by the Sustainable Fisheries Act. In order to gain insight into the life history of this skate, we estimated age and growth for thorny skates, using vertebral band counts from 224 individuals ranging in size from …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The Wolf site (41SM195) is a prehistoric Caddo site located in eastern Smith County, Texas, in the John Wolf land survey, approximately 12 miles east of Tyler, Texas. This article discusses recent excavations I conducted at the site, and summarizes the archeological findings, including features, the age of the archeological deposits, the various lithic and ceramic artifacts that were recovered, and offers speculations about why this part of Smith County was apparently abandoned by the Caddo peoples in the 15th century.

The Wolf site is an important part of my family's history. The abstract for the property begins with a …

Titus Phase Archeology At The S. Stockade Site (41tt865) On Tankersley Creek, Titus County, Texas, Timothy K. Perttula, Bo Nelson, Leeanna Schniebs

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The S. Stockade site was discovered on a small rise (330 feet amsl) in the Tankersley Creek floodplain during a recent archeological survey for the Texas Department of Transportation. Tankersley Creek is a southward-flowing tributary to Big Cypress Creek, and enters that creek’s floodplain a few miles below the Lake Bob Sandlin dam. There is a dense concentration of prehistoric archeological sites throughout the Tankersley Creek valley, particularly post-A.D. 800 Caddo Indian sites. This paper discusses the archeology of the S. Stockade site, a Late Caddoan Titus phase settlement.

The rise at the S. Stockade site is grass-covered (with a …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Human burials were exposed accidentally during construction of a city sewer treatment plant in Norman, Arkansas, in October 1988. Archeological salvage excavations in the days following, directed by Ann Early of the Arkansas Archeological Survey’s Henderson Research Station, identified two burials, a small cluster of residential features, and artifacts dating from the Archaic through Caddo periods. After discussions between the various agencies and groups involved, a new location was found for the sewer treatment plant. The human bone and associated grave goods were returned to the Caddo Tribe for reburial, and the site was covered up for protection. The site, …

A Field Guide To Industrial Properties In Texas, Amy E. Dase

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In the truest sense, industrial properties are more likely than any others to fit architect Louis Sullivan’s oft-quoted assertion that “form ever follows function.” Despite their substantial role in economic and social spheres, industrial properties have long been glossed over by those interested in material culture. It seems, in fact, that neither a comprehensive nor a contemporary overview of these property typologies has been accomplished to date.

A Field Guide to Industrial Properties in Texas is an attempt to address an identifiable information gap. It takes into consideration industrial properties that are related to the petroleum and natural gas, grain, …

Relations Between Local, Nonlocal, Discrete And Continuous Models Of Bioturbation, Filip J. R. Meysman, Bernard P. Boudreau, Jack J. Middelburg Jan 2003

Relations Between Local, Nonlocal, Discrete And Continuous Models Of Bioturbation, Filip J. R. Meysman, Bernard P. Boudreau, Jack J. Middelburg

Journal of Marine Research

A general framework is proposed that classifies existing bioturbation models according to two dividing lines: discrete/semi-discrete/continuous and local/nonlocal. Based on a common stochastic approach, which models biological reworking of particles as a position jump process, the relationships among the different model classes are exposed and the assumptions underlying each model are explicitly derived. We find that discrete/semi-discrete/continuous formulations are principally equivalent, leaving two basic modeling formalisms: (1) the more inclusive nonlocal exchange formalism and (2) the local biodiffusion model, which is obtained as a special case of the former. Three fundamental criteria determine the applicability of these formalisms, termed the …

Form, Performance And Trade-Offs In Swimming And Stability Of Armed Larvae, Daniel Grünbaum, Richard R. Strathmann Jan 2003

Form, Performance And Trade-Offs In Swimming And Stability Of Armed Larvae, Daniel Grünbaum, Richard R. Strathmann

Journal of Marine Research

Diverse larval forms swim and feed with ciliary bands on arms or analogous structures. Armed morphologies are varied: numbers, lengths, and orientations of arms differ among species, change through development, and can be plastic in response to physiological or environmental conditions. A hydromechanical model of idealized equal-armed larvae was used to examine functional consequences of these varied arm arrangements for larval swimming performance. With effects of overall size, ciliary tip speed, and viscosity factored out, the model suggested trade-offs between morphological traits conferring high swimming speed and weight-carrying ability in still water (generally few arms and low arm elevations), and …

On The Distribution, Taxonomy And Karyology Of The Genus Plecotus (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) In Turkey, Ahmet Karataş, Nuri̇ Yi̇ği̇t, Ercüment Çolak, Tolga Kankiliç

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Plecotus auritus and Plecotus austriacus were recorded from 8 and 3 localities in the Asiatic part of Turkey, respectively. It was determined that the length of the first premolar, the shape of the zygomatic arches and baculum distinguish these taxa from each other. Apart from these morphological characteristics, the tibia length of P. austriacus was found to be significantly greater than that of P. austriacus (P < 0.05). The diploid chromosome numbers were identical in both taxa (2n = 32). The number of chromosomal arms (FN = 54) and the number of autosomal chromosomal arms (FNa = 50) were the same as in previously published papers on P. austriacus.
