Sdsu Cow-Calf Teaching And Research Unit, Dick Pruitt, Kevin Vanderwal, Anna Drew

South Dakota Beef Report, 2003

The SDSU Cow/Calf Teaching and Research Unit serves as a resource for teaching, research, extension and student organizations. In addition to use in the classroom, cattle are used for the annual SDSU Little International, Block & Bridle activities, field days, and numerous 4-H, FFA, and other educational events. Recent research projects at the Unit include studies on estrus synchronization, winter supplementation, and absorption of colostrum. For teaching purposes, cattle that vary in calving ease, growth rate, mature size, and maternal value are maintained. It is not feasible to maintain all of the breeds that are important in this region. The …

Rna Interference: Traveling In The Cell And Gaining Functions?, Heriberto D. Cerutti Jan 2003

Rna Interference: Traveling In The Cell And Gaining Functions?, Heriberto D. Cerutti

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Double-stranded RNA can induce the degradation of homologous RNAs in organisms as diverse as protozoa, animals, plants and fungi, resulting in post-transcriptional gene silencing. But in some species, RNA-mediated processes can also lead to translational repression, DNA methylation, heterochromatin formation or DNA elimination. In some situations, amplification of the “trigger” double-stranded RNA seems to be required for efficient silencing. These findings imply that RNA-mediated mechanisms can control gene expression at both the transcriptional and the post-transcriptional level, and that they can operate in the nuclear and the cytoplasmic compartments.

Characteristics Of Cressbred Progeny Of Holstein Dams Sired By Different Beef Breeds: A Review, Bruce C. Shanks Jan 2003

Characteristics Of Cressbred Progeny Of Holstein Dams Sired By Different Beef Breeds: A Review, Bruce C. Shanks

South Dakota Beef Report, 2003

Excellent reviews of cattle breed comparisons or breed-cross comparisons have been previously reported by Franke (1980), Long (1980), and Marshall (1994). However, these reviews do not contain information on the calving ease, performance, carcass characteristics, or beef palatability of crossbred progeny of Holstein dams sired by different beef breeds. In many countries dairy females are commonly mated to beef sires; however, in the United States the use of this practice is somewhat limited. Nevertheless, some United States dairy production schemes utilize beef sires on surplus Holstein heifers and cows. Also, some large commercial dairy operations purchase replacement heifers from outside …

Participation In Electoral Politics, Byron D. Orey, Reginald Vance Jan 2003

Participation In Electoral Politics, Byron D. Orey, Reginald Vance

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

This chapter traces the evolution of African American electoral participation and characterizes the political behavior that it has generated for this racialized community. First, the chapter examines this community's behavior relative to the various political parties, the standard vehicles through which electoral participation is executed. It then examines the voting behavior of African Americans. This is followed by case studies examining Black third-party efforts, political behavior during Reconstruction, and Jesse Jackson's bid for the presidency.

Associations Of A Leptin Gene Polymorphism With Beef Carcass Traits, Chad D. Bierman, Donald M. Marshall, Emilie Campbell, Nels H. Granholm Jan 2003

Associations Of A Leptin Gene Polymorphism With Beef Carcass Traits, Chad D. Bierman, Donald M. Marshall, Emilie Campbell, Nels H. Granholm

South Dakota Beef Report, 2003

The objective was to evaluate associations of leptin genotype with fat and muscle traits in cattle. A single nucleotide polymorphism located in exon 2 of the leptin gene in cattle codes for an amino acid change from arginine (R) to cysteine (C). Genotypes for the polymorphism were determined on 492 crossbred calves by AciI digestion of amplified PCR product (C allele: 130bp; R allele: 73bp and 57bp). Data were analyzed by least-squares, accounting for effects of genotype, sex, year, location, breed-type, and calf sire. Genotype was not significantly associated with carcass weight or ribeye area in any of the analyses. …

Patenting Genome Research Tools And The Law., Rebecca S. Eisenberg Jan 2003

Patenting Genome Research Tools And The Law., Rebecca S. Eisenberg

Articles

Patenting genes encoding therapeutic proteins was relatively uncontroversial in the early days of biotechnology. Controversy arose in the era of high-throughput DNA sequencing, when gene patents started to look less like patents on drugs and more like patents on scientific information. Evolving scientific and business strategies for exploiting genomic information raised concerns that patents might slow subsequent research. The trend towards stricter enforcement of the utility and disclosure requirements by the patent offices should help clarify the current confusion.

Up-Regulation Of Neuronal Calcium Sensor-1 (Ncs-1) In The Prefrontal Cortex Of Schizophrenic And Bipolar Patients, Phil Ok Koh, Ashiwel S. Undieh, Robert Levenson, Patricia S. Goldman-Rakic, Michael S. Lidow Jan 2003

Up-Regulation Of Neuronal Calcium Sensor-1 (Ncs-1) In The Prefrontal Cortex Of Schizophrenic And Bipolar Patients, Phil Ok Koh, Ashiwel S. Undieh, Robert Levenson, Patricia S. Goldman-Rakic, Michael S. Lidow

Publications and Research

The delineation of dopamine dysfunction in the mentally ill has been a long-standing quest of biological psychiatry. The present study focuses on a recently recognized group of dopamine receptor- interacting proteins as possible novel sites of dysfunction in schizophrenic and bipolar patients. We demonstrate that the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in schizophrenia and bipolar cases from the Stanley Foundation Neuropathology Consortium display significantly elevated levels of the D2 dopamine receptor desensitization regulatory protein, neuronal calcium sensor-1. These levels of neuronal calcium sensor-1 were not influenced by age, gender, hemisphere, cause of death, postmortem period, alcohol consumption, or antipsychotic and mood stabilizing …

Punishment Theory, Holism, And The Procedural Conception Of Restorative Justice, Erik Luna Jan 2003

Punishment Theory, Holism, And The Procedural Conception Of Restorative Justice, Erik Luna

Utah Law Review

This Article has argued that the ongoing battle among punishment theories and the resulting consequences for real-life practice pose neither an inevitable nor preferable position on the criminal sanction. Instead, various theories can be accommodated using holism and holistic reasoning through a process-based methodology that avoids the prevailing problems of linear reasoning. In particular, the procedural conception of restorative justice offers an important component of a more holistic approach to sanctioning, allowing all interested parties to air their positions on punishment, both in theory and with regard to a particular offense. Although the participants may differ in their espoused rationales …

Asymmetry Of The Central Apparatus Defines The Location Of Active Microtubule Sliding In Chlamydomonas Flagella, Matthew J. Wargo, Elizabeth F. Smith Jan 2003

Asymmetry Of The Central Apparatus Defines The Location Of Active Microtubule Sliding In Chlamydomonas Flagella, Matthew J. Wargo, Elizabeth F. Smith

Dartmouth Scholarship

Regulation of ciliary and flagellar motility requires spatial control of dynein-driven microtubule sliding. However, the mechanism for regulating the location and symmetry of dynein activity is not understood. One hypothesis is that the asymmetrically organized central apparatus, through interactions with the radial spokes, transmits a signal to regulate dynein-driven microtubule sliding between subsets of doublet microtubules. Based on this model, we hypothesized that the orientation of the central apparatus defines positions of active microtubule sliding required to control bending in the axoneme. To test this, we induced microtubule sliding in axonemes isolated from wild-type and mutant Chlamydomonas cells, and then …

Computational Simulation And Piv Measurements Of The Laminar Vortical Flowfield For A Delta Wing At High Angle Of Attack, Russell M. Cummings, Scott A. Morton, Stefan G. Siegel Jan 2003

Computational Simulation And Piv Measurements Of The Laminar Vortical Flowfield For A Delta Wing At High Angle Of Attack, Russell M. Cummings, Scott A. Morton, Stefan G. Siegel

Aerospace Engineering

The low-speed, laminar flowfield for a 70°-sweep delta wing is investigated. Solutions to the unsteady, three-dimensional, compressible Navier-Stokes equations were obtained on an unstructured grid to match results from an experiment performed in a water tunnel. The experiment was conducted with the delta wing at an angle of attack of 35° and the freestream flow at a root-chord Reynolds number of 40,700. The computational results are analyzed and compared with the experimental results in order to show how computations and experiments can be conducted in a synergistic fashion. Details about the primary vortex location, vortex burst, secondary vortex, and shear …

Philip Morris Faces "The Truth": A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Persuasiveness Of Two Teen-Targeted Anti-Smoking Advertising Campaigns, Marybeth Mcmurray Jan 2003

Philip Morris Faces "The Truth": A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Persuasiveness Of Two Teen-Targeted Anti-Smoking Advertising Campaigns, Marybeth Mcmurray

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the persuasiveness of anti-smoking television advertisements aimed at teens and produced by Philip Morris's Youth Smoking Prevention Program and the American Legacy Foundation's truth campaign. The advertisements are analyzed rhetorically using Kenneth Burke's dramatistic approach, supplemented by theory related to persuasive advertising, characteristics of at-risk adolescents, persuasive attack, and persuasive defense (apologia).

The analysis indicates that strong central themes present in both the Philip Morris and truth campaigns act as a means of rhetorical persuasion, but are not necessarily rhetoric designed to persuade adolescents not to smoke cigarettes. The truth campaign advertisements contain both strengths and weaknesses. …
