Richard Goldschmidt: Hopeful Monsters And Other 'Heresies', Michael Dietrich

Dartmouth Scholarship

Richard Goldschmidt is remembered today as one of the most controversial biologists of the twentieth century. Although his work on sex determination and physiological genetics earned him accolades from his peers, his rejection of the classical gene and his unpopular theories about evolution significantly damaged his scientific reputation. This article reviews Goldschmidt's life and work, with an emphasis on his controversial views.

Piano Letters., Scott Ronald Randall Jan 2003

Piano Letters., Scott Ronald Randall

Theses and Dissertations

In preparing this work of fiction, the author examined how characters used storytelling and acts of imagination to create their own lives. The two central characters of this work come to know one another largely through the sharing of memory and their shared imaginings, and their eventual union is a coming together of their individual stories. The text includes twelve short stories that may either be read as independent works or as a sustained whole.

Characterization And Role Of Lumican In Scleral Extracellular Matrix., Bobbie Ann Austin Jan 2003

Characterization And Role Of Lumican In Scleral Extracellular Matrix., Bobbie Ann Austin

Theses and Dissertations

Changes in scleral extracellular matrix, which is composed of proteins including glycoproteins, proteoglycans, and collagen, allow axial elongation of the eye resulting in myopia. Theoretically, changes in any scleral component could result in changes leading to increased axial length. The purpose of this study is to characterize and study the function of one protein found in scleral extracellular matrix, lumican.

Copper Deficiency In Hl-60 Cells Increases Their Susceptibility To Apoptosis When Treated With Antioxidants., Laura Jean Raymond Jan 2003

Copper Deficiency In Hl-60 Cells Increases Their Susceptibility To Apoptosis When Treated With Antioxidants., Laura Jean Raymond

Theses and Dissertations

The location and function of the electron transport chain render the mitochondria the primary source for potentially damaging reactive oxygen species in aerobic cells. Normally, the concentration of superoxide anion in mitochondria is controlled, at least in part, by the sequential action of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. However, when the terminal steps of the electron transport are impaired or inhibited, superoxide anion production may rise to levels that overwhelm the normal protective enzymes. Studies have shown that copper deficiency causes a reduction in the activity of cytochrome-c oxidase, the copper dependent, terminal respiratory complex of the electron transport chain. …

Regulation Of Human Col9a1 Gene Expression. Activation Of The Proximal Promoter Region By Sox9., Ping Zhang, Sergio A. Jimenez, David G Stokes Jan 2003

Regulation Of Human Col9a1 Gene Expression. Activation Of The Proximal Promoter Region By Sox9., Ping Zhang, Sergio A. Jimenez, David G Stokes

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

The COL9A1 gene contains two promoter regions, one driving expression of a long alpha1(IX) chain in cartilage (upstream) and one driving expression of a shorter chain in the cornea and vitreous (downstream). To determine how the chondrocyte-specific expression of the COL9A1 gene is regulated, we have begun to characterize the upstream chondrocyte-specific promoter region of the human COL9A1 gene. Transient-transfection analyses performed in rat chondrosarcoma (RCS) cells, human chondrosarcoma (HTB) cells, and NIH/3T3 cells showed that the COL9A1 promoter was active in RCS cells but not HTB or NIH/3T3 cells. Inclusion of the first intron had no effect on promoter …

Accuracy Of Predicting Weight And Percentage Of Beef Carcass Retail Product Using Ultrasound And Live Animal Measures, S. P. Greiner, G. H. Rouse, D. E. Wilson, L. V. Cundiff, T. L. Wheeler Jan 2003

Accuracy Of Predicting Weight And Percentage Of Beef Carcass Retail Product Using Ultrasound And Live Animal Measures, S. P. Greiner, G. H. Rouse, D. E. Wilson, L. V. Cundiff, T. L. Wheeler

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Five hundred thirty-four steers were evaluated over a 2-yr period to develop and validate prediction equations for estimating carcass composition from live animal ultrasound measurements and to compare these equations with those developed from carcass measurements. Within 5 d before slaughter, steers were ultrasonically measured for 12th-rib fat thickness (UFAT), longissimus area (ULMA), rump fat thickness (URPFAT), and body wall thickness (UBDWALL). Carcasses were fabricated to determine weight (KGRPRD) and percentage (PRPRD) of boneless, totally trimmed retail product. Data from steers born in Year 1 (n = 282) were used to develop prediction equations using stepwise regression. Final models using …

Prediction Of Retail Product Weight And Percentage Using Ultrasound And Carcass Measurements In Beef Cattle, S. P. Greiner, G. H. Rouse, D. E. Wilson, L. V. Cundiff, T. L. Wheeler

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Data from 534 steers representing six sire breed groups were used to develop live animal ultrasound prediction equations for weight and percentage of retail product. Steers were ultrasonically measured for 12th-rib fat thickness (UFAT), rump fat thickness (URPFAT), longissimus muscle area (ULMA), and body wall thickness (UBDWALL) within 5 d before slaughter. Carcass measurements included in USDA yield grade (YG) and quality grade calculations were obtained. Carcasses were fabricated into boneless, totally trimmed retail products. Regression equations to predict weight and percentage of retail product were developed using either live animal or carcass traits as independent variables. Most of the …

The Relationship Between Ultrasound Measurements And Carcass Fat Thickness And Longissimus Muscle Area In Beef Cattle, S. P. Greiner, G. H. Rouse, D. E. Wilson, L. V. Cundiff, T. L. Wheeler

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Five hundred thirty-four steers were evaluated over a 2-yr period to determine the accuracy of ultrasonic estimates of carcass 12th-rib fat thickness (CFAT) and longissimus muscle area (CLMA). Within 5 d before slaughter, steers were ultrasonically measured for 12th-rib fat thickness (UFAT) and longissimus muscle area (ULMA) using an Aloka 500V real-time ultrasound machine equipped with a 17.2-cm, 3.5-MHz linear transducer. Overall, correlation coefficients between ultrasound and carcass fat and longissimus muscle area were 0.89 and 0.86, respectively. Correlations for UFAT with CFAT were similar between years (0.86 and 0.90), whereas the relationship between ULMA and CLMA was stronger in …

Task Demands And Age-Related Differences In Retrieval And Response Inhibition, Steffan Wilson, Katherine Kipp, Jennifer Daniels Jan 2003

Task Demands And Age-Related Differences In Retrieval And Response Inhibition, Steffan Wilson, Katherine Kipp, Jennifer Daniels

Psychology Faculty and Staff Research

This study investigates the role of task demands on children's ability to inhibit irrelevant information using a block-cued directed-forgetting task. Recall performance was compared in a block-cued directed-forgetting task in which task demands had been decreased by presenting blocks of semantically related words with that in which unrelated words were presented. Inhibition patterns of recall were found at a younger age in the task that contained the related words than in the task that contained the unrelated words. These results suggest that previous results charting the development of cognitive inhibition may not have been exclusively the product of the development …

Unusual Life Style Of Giant Chlorella Viruses, James L. Van Etten Jan 2003

Unusual Life Style Of Giant Chlorella Viruses, James L. Van Etten

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Paramecium bursaria chlorella virus (PBCV-1) is the prototype of a family of large, icosahedral, plaque-forming, dsDNA viruses that replicate in certain unicellular, eukaryotic chlorella-like green algae. Its 330-kb genome contains ~373 protein-encoding genes and 11 tRNA genes. The predicted gene products of ~50% of these genes resemble proteins of known function, including many that are unexpected for a virus, e.g., ornithine decarboxylase, hyaluronan synthase, GDP-D-mannose 4,6 dehydratase, and a potassium ion channel protein. In addition to their large genome size, the chlorella viruses have other features that distinguish them from most viruses. These features include: (a) The viruses encode multiple …

The Problem Of Enforcing Environmental Norms In The Wto And What To Do About It, Sanford E. Gaines Jan 2003

The Problem Of Enforcing Environmental Norms In The Wto And What To Do About It, Sanford E. Gaines

UC Law SF International Law Review

National and international focus and efforts on trade has led to the comparative disadvantage of international environmental policy relative to trade policy in what is known as the trade-environment problematique. The tension between trade and the environment does not exist because trade norms trump environmental norms, but because of the tension between environmental protection and the intensification of economic activity to provide for the world's growing population. This article argues that rather than creating a new international institution to address the trade-environment problematique, international environmental policy should instead be more fully and deeply integrated into economic policy, which can only …

The Hanford 300 Area Cleanup Plan – Insufficient, Dangerous, And Against Best-Known Findings, Columbia Riverkeeper, Greg Debruler

Columbia Riverkeeper

This report analyzes the decision to limit the cleanup of the Hanford 300 Area to “Industrial Use” only. This decision raises legitimate concerns that providing such a minimal cleanup may be insufficient for protecting the Columbia River ecosystem and natural environment surrounding the Hanford site throughout the extraordinarily long life span of the hazardous waste. This report also provides a background on how the cleanup decision was made, the legal drivers, and an analysis of the risk assessment processes used in reaching the decision.

Given the multiple regulations, complex issues, and extensive technical data, it may be very difficult for …
