Creating Narrated Multimedia Presentations In The Second And Foreign Language Class, Janet Flewelling
Creating Narrated Multimedia Presentations In The Second And Foreign Language Class, Janet Flewelling
Dimensions
With increasing frequency, teachers are being encouraged to integrate technology into their teaching programs. Their challenge is to find technological applications that promote and enhance learning on the part of their students. A further challenge for second and foreign language teachers is to ensure that the applications reflect principles associated with communicative teaching. This article discusses how students can create narrated multimedia presentations that can be published on the Internet. Suitable for second and foreign language programs at any grade level, this activity would facilitate and encourage authentic communication while developing technological and organizational skills. It would also lend itself …

Group Study Abroad And Thematic Units, Sue Barry
Dimensions
This article describes the model for a Group Study Abroad Project to Peru for K-12 teachers of Spanish that took place during the summer of 2001. The model has a pre-travel, overseas, and post-travel component. All three are described, with special emphasis on the program exit evaluation and the participants’ reactions one year later. Participants were generally positive about their experience, but some expressed a need for more preparation in creating thematic units. Selected units are described in the appendices along with Web site references where readers can find complete lesson plans and e-mail addresses of authors.

2002 Christmas Bird Counts
Nebraska Bird Review
2002 Christmas Bird Counts compiled by Janis Paseka
The 2002 Christmas Bird Count period included 11 counts, down one from the previous year, as no count was held in Harlan County. Ten of these counts took place in Nebraska, and one, which includes the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge and Boyer Chute, straddles the Nebraska-Iowa border. A total of 237 counters participated in this year's count, 208 in the field and 29 at feeders.
The overall weather this year was balmy, with over half the counts ending their day in the 50's or 60's. The weather had also been mild in …
Winter Field Report, December 2002 To February 2003, W. Ross Silcock
Winter Field Report, December 2002 To February 2003, W. Ross Silcock
Nebraska Bird Review
Overall, this winter season was pretty quiet. There were no major weather events, no major invasions Gust one minor incursion), and, with one big exception, no real rarities. Indeed, one observer (JJ) said: "I don't think I've ever had such a poor winter with bird sightings." Thus I stoop to the point of mentioning the presence of a kangaroo in Crawford, dutifully recorded on the CBC there on 28 December (BW). It was not identified to species, unfortunately.
On a more serious note, it is important to keep in mind that what we do as birders can make a significant …

Aggregation Formation In A Neotropical Harvestment (Opiliones: Cosmetidae), March 2003, Crystal Fankhauser
Aggregation Formation In A Neotropical Harvestment (Opiliones: Cosmetidae), March 2003, Crystal Fankhauser
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Neotropical harvestments are generally omnivorous, solitary nocturnal foragers. However, several species of harvestmen are known to form aggregations during the day, including a species of harvestmen (family Cosmetidae) that is common in open, grassy areasin Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica. This study focuses on how and under what conditions new aggregations are formed by marking and recapturing individuals in natural and artificially created sites. Proposed hypotheses for the purpose of forming aggregations include: limited site availability that provides protection from desiccation and exposure to light, an increase in defensive ability against predators by using the mass release of defensive chemicals and …
Age-Related Mobbing Behavior In Brown Jays, March 2003, James W. Ford
Age-Related Mobbing Behavior In Brown Jays, March 2003, James W. Ford
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Mobbing behavior is one way birds respond to the threat of a predator. I studied the mobbing behavior of Brown Jays (Cyanocorax morio) in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Brown Jays are included in the 3% of bird species that breed cooperatively. I was curious whether the competitive nature of obtaining a breeding position was related to mobbing in any way. Were the jays mobbing to increase individual fitness or inclusive fitness? I divided the birds into three age groups (juvenile, sub-adult, and adult) and tried to measure aggression between the groups. I used myself, a rubber snake model painted to resemble …

The Development Of Relationships Between Constituent Concentrations And Generic Hydrological Variables, Carmen T. Agouridis, Dwayne R. Edwards
The Development Of Relationships Between Constituent Concentrations And Generic Hydrological Variables, Carmen T. Agouridis, Dwayne R. Edwards
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
The collection and analysis of samples from storm events constitutes a large portion of the effort associated with water quality research. Estimating concentrations or loads from these events is often difficult. The equipment necessary to analyze the samples and the required laboratory resources are typically significant expenses incurred by the researcher. One potential method to reduce these costs is through the development of generic relationships between concentrations and easily measured variables such as dimensionless flow rate or time. The benefits recognized from such an effort include a reduction in the number of required samples, resulting in a reduction in cost. …

The Causes And Effects Of Nest Clustering In Colonies Of The Chestnut-Headed Oropendola (Psarocolius Wagleri), March 2003, Jason Fisher
The Causes And Effects Of Nest Clustering In Colonies Of The Chestnut-Headed Oropendola (Psarocolius Wagleri), March 2003, Jason Fisher
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Colonies of nesting birds are often subdivided into clusters of nests; the causes and effects of these clusters have profound impacts on the breeding strategies of colonial nesting birds. Five colonies of a Neotropical colonial nesting bird, the Chestnut-headed Oropendola (Psarocolius wagleri), were studied to identify trends in male and female intersexual competition, mating strategy, and brood parasitism in relation to colony and cluster size. The results were compared with data from studies by Webster (1994a, b) for another colonial nester, the Montezuma Oropendola (Psarocolius montezuma), which is known to use female-defence polygyny. The comparisons showed that while both the …

Bridging The Gender Gap In Computing: An Integrative Approach To Content Design For Girls, Kathleen-M. Lynn, Chad Raphael, Karin Olefsky, Christine M. Bachen
Communication
Although some observed differences in males' and females' attitudes toward and uses of computers appear to be narrowing, the gender gap remains widest in relation to programming and software design, which are still male preserves. In response, software and Web site designers have applied feminist theories to develop three distinct approaches to creating content for girls that might increase their interest in computers. These approaches involve appealing to girls' traditional “feminine” interests, nontraditional “masculine” interests, and gender-neutral interests. This study proposes that to bridge today's gender gap, prior approaches need to integrate appeals to girls' traditional and nontraditional interests, and …

Review Of Molecular Biology Of Fungal Development, Mycology Series, Volume 15, Marty Dickman
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Numerous publications, books, and textbooks are available that treat the subject of developmental biology. Far less is available detailing the fungi, an important group of organisms that have implications in a broad variety of contexts from medical to agricultural to food, and of course as model systems for “higher” eukaryotes. This nicely edited book by Osiewacz is an attempt to fill that gap. He has compiled an impressive list of authors, who represent leaders in their respective fields. This gives readers a detailed and current view of a broad array of fungal processes and lifestyles, ranging from saprophytes to pathogens …

Glucuronidation Enzymes, Genes And Psychiatry, Jose De Leon
Psychiatry Faculty Publications
The phase I cytochrome P450 (CYP) isoenzymes have received substantial attention in the pharmacogenetic literature. Researchers are beginning to examine the role of the phase II UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) enzymes, which produce products that are more water-soluble, less toxic and more readily excreted than the parent compounds. Several reasons may have contributed to neglect of UGTs (compared to CYPs) including: (1) the overlapping activity of UGTs and lack of selective probes; (2) the complexity of the glucuronidation cycle; and (3) the difficulty in developing analytic methods to measure glucuronides. Current CYP knowledge is used as a model to predict advances in …

Faculty Publications
Bacillus anthracis is a bacterial pathogen of great importance, both historically and in the present. This study presents data collected from several investigations and indicates that B. anthracis virulence is associated with the clonality and virulence of plasmids pXO1 and pXO2. Guinea pigs vaccinated with Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed were challenged with 20 B. anthracis isolates representative of worldwide genetic diversity. These same isolates were characterized with respect to plasmid copy number by using a novel method of quantitative PCR developed for rapid and efficient detection of B. anthracis from environmental samples. We found that the copy numbers for both pXO1 …
