Native American Religion And Film: Interviews With Chris Eyre And Sherman Alexie, Julien R. Fielding Apr 2003

Native American Religion And Film: Interviews With Chris Eyre And Sherman Alexie, Julien R. Fielding

Journal of Religion & Film

For decades Hollywood films have cast the American Indian as the savage, the medicine man and the noble warrior, stereotypes that either demonize or romanticize a people. Ritual and religion rarely receive much better treatment. One of the reasons for this poor representation is that filmmakers are coming from a white perspective. Director Chris Eyre and writer-director Sherman Alexie, both American Indians, have emerged in the last decade to rectify the situation, jointly creating the film Smoke Signals, a buddy road picture that forces the protagonists to rethink Indian identity and the bonds that tie them. Eyre and Alexie …

'It All Happens Here:' Locating Salvation In Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant, Simon J. Taylor Apr 2003

'It All Happens Here:' Locating Salvation In Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant, Simon J. Taylor

Journal of Religion & Film

Bad Lieutenant offers a both a narrative and a theology of salvation. Both are focussed on the death of the Lieutenant at the end of the film. This essay traces these accounts of salvation and finds that they are both flawed, in nature and scope. These flaws derive from an exclusive focus on the death of the Lieutenant and the cross of Christ as the loci of salvation. The value of Ferrara's work is in the articulation of these flaws, as they point to dangers for Christian theology as it seeks to articulate the salvation offered by Christ.

The Unholy Biblical Subtexts And Other Religious Elements Built Into Superman: The Movie (1978) And Superman Ii (1981), Anton K. Kozlovic Apr 2003

The Unholy Biblical Subtexts And Other Religious Elements Built Into Superman: The Movie (1978) And Superman Ii (1981), Anton K. Kozlovic

Journal of Religion & Film

The sacred-secular parallels between Jesus Christ and Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman in Superman: The Movie (1978) and Superman II (1981) were explicated previously in the Journal of Religion & Film. This research was followed by the identification of additional holy, but non-christic subtexts built into the films to complement Superman as a Christ-figure. However, the sacred-secular parallels did not stop there. In addition to this persuasive array of positive holy figurations, complementary unholy religious subtexts were also built into the films. They were designed to counterpoint the alien Messiah and his positive pals, plus accentuate the evilness of the unholy Kryptonian …

Competing For The People's Affection: Federalism's Forgotten Marketplace, Todd E. Pettys Apr 2003

Competing For The People's Affection: Federalism's Forgotten Marketplace, Todd E. Pettys

Vanderbilt Law Review

In recent years, the United States Supreme Court frequently has invoked federalism principles when reviewing federal legislation but has failed to articulate an overarching vision of federal-state relations. The Court has relied instead on seemingly disparate premises, including a local-national distinction that some believe is disingenuous, notions of "commandeering" and political accountability that some believe are poorly rationalized, and a conception of state dignity that critics charge is ill suited for a nation in which the people are sovereign. The Court does occasionally recite the perceived benefits of federalism, but those benefits are framed at such a high level of …

Evaluation Of Automated Ribotyping As A Tool For Bacterial Source Tracking In Aquatic Environments, Tracy L. Idocks Apr 2003

Evaluation Of Automated Ribotyping As A Tool For Bacterial Source Tracking In Aquatic Environments, Tracy L. Idocks

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

An Escherichia coli ribotype profile library was created for the Tampa Bay watershed for application to bacterial source tracking of human or non-human fecal contamination to the bay and surrounding rivers. Bacterial source tracking uses a variety of methods to identify the source of fecal contamination, not just the quantity of the indicator bacteria present, allowing implementation of effective management practices. The 700 confirmed E. coli isolate library was equally distributed among four sources: human, bird, dog and cow. The library was tested for applicability for source tracking within the Tampa Bay watershed. The DuPont Qualicon RiboPrinter® Microbial Characterization System, …

Environmental Estrogens Alter Early Development In Xenopus Laevis, Cassandra L. Bevan, Donna M. Porter, Anita Prasad, Marthe J. Howard, Leslie P. Henderson

Dartmouth Scholarship

A growing number of environmental toxicants found in pesticides, herbicides, and industrial solvents are believed to have deleterious effects on development by disrupting hormone-sensitive processes. We exposed Xenopus laevis embryos at early gastrula to the commonly encountered environmental estrogens nonylphenol, octylphenol, and methoxychlor, the antiandrogen, p,p-DDE, or the synthetic androgen, 17 alpha-methyltestosterone at concentrations ranging from 10 nM to 10 microM and examined them at tailbud stages (approximately 48 hr of treatment). Exposure to the three environmental estrogens, as well as to the natural estrogen 17 beta-estradiol, increased mortality, induced morphologic deformations, increased apoptosis, and altered the deposition and differentiation …

An Examination Of Modulation Of Feeding Behavior In The Nurse Shark Ginglymostoma Cirratum (Bonaterre 1788), Michael Matott

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The ability of an organism to modulate its feeding behavior is an important focus of feeding ecology studies. Modulation is the ability to distinctly and consistently alter a behavior to accommodate different stimuli. The goal of this study was to examine the ability of the nurse shark Ginglymostoma cirratum to modulate its food capture behavior with different sizes and types of food items. This was carried out through kinematic and electromyographic analysis.

Eight sub-adult specimens of G. cirratum were filmed feeding on two different food types (squid and fish) and sizes (gape size and larger than gape size). Filming consisted …

Cell-Cycle Regulatory Proteins In Podocyte Cell In Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome Of Childhood., Tarak Srivastava, Robert E. Garola, J M. Whiting, Uri S. Alon

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: The podocyte cell is believed to play an important role in idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) of childhood. In adults with cellular and collapsing focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), the expression of cell-cycle regulatory proteins such as p27, p57, and cyclin D is decreased and expression of cyclin A, Ki-67, and p21 is observed in podocyte cells suggestive of a dysregulated podocyte phenotype. We investigated for alterations in the expression of cyclin kinase inhibitors, p27, p57, p21, and cyclins D and A in the podocyte cell of children with INS.

METHODS: Forty-two kidney biopsies were investigated; 14 with minimal-change disease (MCD), …

Male Reproductive Dynamics In The Caribbean Spiny Lobster Panulirus Argus, Jamie S. Heisig Apr 2003

Male Reproductive Dynamics In The Caribbean Spiny Lobster Panulirus Argus, Jamie S. Heisig

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The population size structure of the Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus argus, in the Florida Keys, Florida (USA) has undergone a dramatic shift as a result of fishing pressure on the large individuals of the population. Male lobsters are affected most by fishing because of sexual dimorphism in size and other studies have shown that male size has direct impacts on reproductive output (i.e., number of fertilized eggs/clutch) that are independent of female size. To assess more precisely the impact of male size on fertilization success, I conducted laboratory experiments and field observations to examine various male reproductive attributes over …

Population Mobility High-Risk Environments And The Diffusion Of Hiv/Stds: A Community Based Study In Southwest China, Hongyun Fu

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

Globally, population migration has been associated with the spread ofHIV/STDs in many countries. A similar trend has been observed in China from the very beginning of the HIV epidemic, but empirical research is very limited. Furthermore, the previous studies mainly focused on the micro impact of migration on individual migrant's risky behaviors. The impact of population mobility on the general population, especially on non-migrant residents, has been ignored. Using data collected from a specially designed community level survey, which was conducted in a province in the Southwest of China, this study examines the macro-level association between temporary migration and the …

Real-Time Study Of Multidrug Resistance Mechanism In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Using Nanoparticle Optics And Single Live Cell Imaging, Sophia Vasou Kyriacou Apr 2003

Real-Time Study Of Multidrug Resistance Mechanism In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Using Nanoparticle Optics And Single Live Cell Imaging, Sophia Vasou Kyriacou

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

This thesis centers on the study of the xenobiotic efflux system in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is a ubiquitous bacterium. It resists many structurally and functionally diverse substrates due to expression of Mex-extrusion pumps, including MexAB-OprM, MexCD-OprJ, MexEF-OprN and MexXY-OprM systems. Despite extensive research, the structure and mechanism of multidrug resistance is unclear (1-9). For example, (i) how do MexA, MexB and OprM proteins assemble to extrude antibiotics? (ii) What is the antibiotic susceptibility of MexA, MexB, and OprM proteins? (iii) How do substrates cross the outer membrane of P. aeruginosa? (iv) Where are antibiotics accumulated inside the cell? This thesis …

The Quantitative Assessment Of Osteoinductivity Of Human Demineralized Bone Matrix And Cdna Array Analysis Of Osteogenic Differentiation In Human Periosteal Cells, Sittisak Honsawek

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Demineralized bone matrix (DBM) has been extensively utilized in orthopeadic, periodontal, and maxillofacial applications. DBM comprises bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) that are essential regulators for endochondral bone formation. The current study was undertaken to establish the quantitative in vitro assays for determining the osteoinductive potential of human DBM and the use of cDNA gene expression array technology for examining gene expression profiles during osteoblast differentiation in human periosteal cells.

BMP-4 is one of the most osteoinductive factors and has been investigated for clinical applications. For this reason, BMP-4 was designated as the osteoinductive protein for use in the quantitative in …

The Ecological Ramifications Of Disease And Density In The Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, Donald C. Behringer Jr. Apr 2003

The Ecological Ramifications Of Disease And Density In The Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, Donald C. Behringer Jr.

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

In 1999, I discovered the first virus known to be pathogenic to any species of lobster. HLV-PA is a pathogenic herpes-like virus that infects juvenile Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, in the waters off south Florida (USA), and it alters the behavior and ecology of this species in fundamental ways. Gross signs of HLV-PA infection are lethargy, morbidity, cessation of molting, and discolored, “milky” hemolymph that does not clot. HLV-PA infects the hemocytes of host lobsters, specifically the hyalinocytes and semi-granulocytes, but not the granulocytes. When hemolymph from infected donors was injected into healthy juvenile lobsters, 90% of the …
