To Be Or Not To Be Ideophonically Impoverished, Janis B. Nuckolls
To Be Or Not To Be Ideophonically Impoverished, Janis B. Nuckolls
Faculty Publications
This paper addresses a current debate over the universality of ideophones, a class of expressions that are used to simulate, through performative foregrounding, the salient processes and perceptions of everyday life experience. Using data from Quechua-speaking Runa in Amazonian Ecuador, I argue for a view of ideophones as a type of cultural discourse through which speakers align themselves with nonhuman life forms and forces of nature. This alignment is suggested by the special performative properties of ideophones, which collapse the distinction between a speech event and a narrated event, thus compelling a speaker to become an action, event, or process, …

The Myth Of Science As A ‘Neutral Arbiter’ For Triggering Precautions, Vern R. Walker
The Myth Of Science As A ‘Neutral Arbiter’ For Triggering Precautions, Vern R. Walker
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
This article demonstrates that science cannot be a "neutral arbiter" for triggering precautionary measures, because both making and warranting findings of risk require non-scientific decisions. Making a risk finding requires decisions about the meaning of "risk of harm," about the meaning of any modifiers for that predicate, and about the degree of confidence asserted for the finding as a whole. Determining that the available scientific evidence warrants a finding of risk requires decisions about acceptable degrees of various types of uncertainty namely, conceptual uncertainty, measurement uncertainty, sampling uncertainty, modeling uncertainty, and causal uncertainty. This article illustrates these decisions using examples …
Material Persons, Immaterial Souls And An Ethic Of Life, Kevin Corcoran
Material Persons, Immaterial Souls And An Ethic Of Life, Kevin Corcoran
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Among objections to naturalist views of human persons like Animalism and the Constitution View are two that concern alleged ethical implications. One criticism is that such views are defective because they lack the metaphysical resources to generate moral obligations or moral expectations to protect life, in either its early or late stages. Another objection relies on the claim that any metaphysical view of human persons according to which some human organisms lack the property of personhood has horrendous moral implications. With respect to the first objection I argue that resources metaphysically neutral with respect to dualism and naturalism about persons …

Beyond Trashiness: The Sexual Language Of 1970s Feminist Fiction, Meryl Altman
Journal of International Women's Studies
It is now commonplace to study the beginning of second wave US radical feminism as the history of a few important groups – mostly located in New York, Boston and Chicago – and the canon of a few influential polemical texts and anthologies. But how did feminism become a mass movement? To answer this question, we need to look also to popular mass-market forms that may have been less ideologically “pure” but that nonetheless carried the edge of feminist revolutionary thought into millions of homes. This article examines novels by Alix Kates Shulman, Marge Piercy and Erica Jong, all published …

Using Speed Dating Techniques To Enliven And Improve Conferences And Workshops, Larry Lev
Using Speed Dating Techniques To Enliven And Improve Conferences And Workshops, Larry Lev
Journal of Extension
Most Extension educators seek new ideas for organizing more exciting and animated workshops and conferences. This article describes structured networking activities (also know as "speed dating") that succeed in enlivening meetings, strengthening networking, and improving learning. A speed mentoring approach was successful in sharing knowledge among farmers' market managers with different levels of experience. Farmers and chefs used a more classic speed dating approach to forge new relationships and make deals.
Reforming The Law Applicable To The Award Of Restoration Damages As A Remedy For Environmental Torts, James R. Cox
Reforming The Law Applicable To The Award Of Restoration Damages As A Remedy For Environmental Torts, James R. Cox
Pace Environmental Law Review
The author argues that traditional doctrines allowing the award of restoration damages in limited circumstances should be reformed to permit the broader application of such awards. Cox begins with a review of a number of policy rationales that support such an evolution of the law and then goes on to discuss the various doctrines applicable to restoration-damage awards. Cox concludes that courts involved in the adjudication of environmental tort claims should consider the expansion of existing equitable trust doctrines that would remove the fear of unjust enrichment of environmental plaintiffs, thus permitting more liberal restoration-damage doctrines to emerge.

Measuring The Environmental Attitudes Of Children In Grade 4: A Study In Clark County, Amir Khawaja
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The purpose of this study was to examine whether there is an increased positive effect on children's attitude when they are taught about the environment in an outdoor/hands-on setting versus an indoor traditional classroom setting. The study focused on grade four students in the Clark County School District. Half of the group was comprised of students that were taught about the environment using traditional classroom learning materials while the other half consisted of students that were taught using the outdoor/hands-on approach. In order to test the results, the students were given a survey. The questionnaire created by Malkus and Musser …

Hyaluronate Lyase Gene Of Streptococcus Pyogenes: Molecular Characterization And Regulation, Sheryl Lynne Walton
Hyaluronate Lyase Gene Of Streptococcus Pyogenes: Molecular Characterization And Regulation, Sheryl Lynne Walton
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Streptococcus pyogenes causes an assortment of diseases ranging from pharyngitis to necrotizing fasciitis. This bacterium has the ability to elaborate several extracellular products capable of causing tissue damage; one of which is a hyaluronate lyase. Little information is available regarding the regulation of streptococcal hyaluronidase. As such, the expression of hylA in the hyaluronate lyase-producing strain ATCC 10403 and in strains that do not produce detectable enzyme was analyzed by RT-PCR and quantitative PCR. Hyaluronate lyase transcript was detected throughout growth for all strains; however, expression of hylA in the enzymatically inactive strains, 71698 and SF370, was determined …
Multi-Tiered, Multi-Disciplinary Work Teams--The Csu Cafo Work Group Tackles Controversial Public Issues, Andrew Seidl
Multi-Tiered, Multi-Disciplinary Work Teams--The Csu Cafo Work Group Tackles Controversial Public Issues, Andrew Seidl
Journal of Extension
The Colorado State University Cooperative Extension administration formed a multi-disciplinary and multi-level working group to address the debate over large confined animal feeding operations. The work group structure included campus-based extension personnel, regional specialists, and county agents from each of Colorado's Extension regions. The group undertook to inform the CE system, interest groups, elected officials, and the lay public about CAFO policy issues. Evaluation suggests support for the structure, content, and activities of the group. All respondents thought that the work group was a useful model for public policy and public issues education, although areas for improvement were also identified.

The War On Terror: Constitutional Governance In A State Of Permanent Warfare, W. Wesley Pue
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article assesses Canada's principal legal responses to the challenge presented by terrorism in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. A review of major federal "anti-terrorism" legislation reveals a legislative response that fundamentally violates core constitutional principles while failing to significantly enhance public safety.
Civil Disobedience And Academic Freedom, Leslie Green
Civil Disobedience And Academic Freedom, Leslie Green
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
What is the relation between the forms of principled law-breaking that we know as civil disobedience and the special rights of teachers and students that comprise academic freedom? It is argued that academic freedom does not give them a right to engage in civil disobedience, not even on campus. At the same time, however, academic freedom does protect them in studying, discussing, assessing, and even recommending civil disobedience--even when their opinions and recommendations are misguided or wrong. The subject is discussed in light of some recent cases.

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Background: Chronic consumption of small amounts of ethanol protects myocardium from ischemic injury. We tested the hypothesis that adenosine type 1 (A1) receptors mediate these beneficial effects.
Methods: Dogs (n=37) were fed with ethanol (1.5 g/kg) or water mixed with dry food twice per day for 12 weeks, fasted overnight before experimentation, and instrumented for measurement of hemodynamics. Dogs received intravenous drug vehicle (50% polyethylene glycol in 0.1 N sodium hydroxide and 0.9% saline over 15 min) or the selective A1 receptor antagonist 8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine (DPCPX, 0.8 mg/kg over 15 min) and were subjected …

Hybridization Between The Watersnakes Nerodia Sipedon And Nerodia Fasciata, In The Carolinas: A Morphological And Molecular Approach, Konrad Mebert
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
A few traditionally applied diagnostic characters of color pattern were compared with an additional set of morphological and genetic characters to evaluate differences between Nerodia sipedon and N. fasciata and to study the dynamics across their hybrid zone in the Carolinas. Many of the morphological characters exhibited significant interspecific differences, although only the number of dorsally complete crossbands (CBa) was diagnostic by itself. A discriminant function analysis of morphological characters was successful in separating both taxa. Species-specific nuclear markers, identified by the AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism) technique were nearly fixed and served as diagnostic markers. They revealed extensive introgression …

Expression Of Glutathione-S-Transferase Mu 1 (Gstm1) And Glutathione-S-Transferase Theta 1 (Gstt1) In Patients With Aplastic Anemia And Myelodysplastic Syndromes, Aaron Conrad Spivey
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Aplastic Anemia is a disorder of the hematopoietic bone marrow stem cells that is frequently associated with drug or chemical exposures. Reduced ability to detoxify drugs or chemicals may result in an increased risk of disease. Glutathione S-transferases are Phase II enzymes, which help detoxify xenobiotics. Many patients who have developed aplastic anemia and myelodysplastic syndrome have the null genotype for GSTMI and/or GSTTI. For patients with GSTMI and GSTTI positive genotypes, non-expression of these enzymes may cause an increased risk in developing aplastic anemia or myelodysplastic syndrome. To test whether genotype positive patients have GSTMI or GSTTI null …
