Using The Tools We Have: An Integrated Approach To Protect The Sea Of Okhotsk, Julia Lemense Huff

Pace Environmental Law Review

This article discusses the environmental impacts of oil and gas exploration on the Sea of Okhotsk and proposes a multi-faceted approach to protecting and preserving this large marine ecosystem. The article begins with an overview of the Sea of Okhotsk and Sakhalin Island and one of its most endangered residents, the Western North Pacific gray whale. The article goes on to discuss the oil and gas industry in Russia, describing the effects of oil and gas exploration and production on marine ecosystems. The author then suggests that the other proposed approaches to protecting the marine environment or lessening the environmental …

Metabolism Of Fructooligosaccharides By Lactobacillus Paracasei 1195, Handan Kaplan, Robert W. Hutkins

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Fermentation of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and other oligosaccharides has been suggested to be an important property for the selection of bacterial strains used as probiotics. However, little information is available on FOS transport and metabolism by lactic acid bacteria and other probiotic bacteria. The objectives of this research were to identify and characterize the FOS transport system of Lactobacillus paracasei 1195. Radiolabeled FOS was synthesized enzymatically from [3H]sucrose and purified by column and thin-layer chromatography, yielding three main products: glucose (G) α-1,2 linked to two, three, or four fructose (F) units (GF2, GF3, and GF …

Infection Of Cattle With A Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Strain That Contains A Mutation In The Latency-Related Gene Leads To Increased Apoptosis In Trigeminal Ganglia During The Transition From Acute Infection To Latency, Luciane Lovato, Melissa Inman, Gail A. Henderson, Alan R. Doster, Clinton J. Jones Apr 2003

Jones

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) is an important pathogen of cattle and infection is usually initiated via the ocular or nasal cavity. After acute infection, the primary site for BHV-1 latency is sensory neurons in the trigeminal ganglia (TG). Reactivation from latency occurs sporadically, resulting in virus shedding and transmission to uninfected cattle. The only abundant viral transcript expressed during latency is the latencyrelated (LR) RNA. An LR mutant was constructed by inserting three stop codons near the beginning of the LR RNA. This mutant grows to wild-type (wt) efficiency in bovine kidney cells and in the nasal cavity of acutely …

Great Gathering On The Great Plains, Paul A. Johnsgard, Michael Forsberg Apr 2003

Great Gathering On The Great Plains, Paul A. Johnsgard, Michael Forsberg

Paul Johnsgard Collection

Early spring along the Platte River is sheer magic. For more than a month migratory sandhill cranes pour into central Nebraska, attracted by the shallow river’s abundant roosting sites and nearby meadows and farms for feeding. Looking like legions of gray ghosts from a distance, the birds often cover wet meadows and cornfields from one end to the other. Flocks of a thousand or more fly low over the river, their voices rising and falling as they approach, pass overhead and disappear. With nearly a half-million cranes stopping here each spring, the placid Platte is transformed into the site of …

Evolution Of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus: Dynamics Of Population Growth Within Plants May Explain Limited Variation, Roy C. French, Drake C. Stenger Apr 2003

Evolution Of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus: Dynamics Of Population Growth Within Plants May Explain Limited Variation, Roy C. French, Drake C. Stenger

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Like many other plant RNA viruses, Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) sequence diversity within and among infected plants is low given the large number of virions produced. This may be explained by considering aspects of plant virus life history. Intracellular replication of RNA viruses is predominately linear, not exponential, which means that the rate at which mutations accumulate also is linear. Bottlenecks during systemic movement further limit diversity. Analysis of mixed infections with two WSMV isolates suggests that about four viral genomes participate in systemic invasion of each tiller. Low effective population size increases the role of stochastic processes on …

Style, Ethnicity, Technology, And Practice: Analysis Of A Material Culture Assemblage From The Paleoindian-Archaic Cultural Transition In The Northwestern Great Lakes, Matthew R. Laidler

Masters Theses

This study examines issues concerning the theoretical basis of style and ethnicity in archaeology through analysis of a material culture (lithic) assemblage from the Late Paleoindian-Archaic cultural transition period In the Northwestern Great Lakes region of the United States. A theoretical framework utilizing practice theory as expounded by Pierre Bourdieu is applied to an interpretation of both the theoretical and concrete issues involved in this analysis. Using the context of an interpreted ritual/mortuary site, a social archaeology concerned with the social, political, and organizational context of production, use, and deposition of technological objects is developed to address style and ethnicity …

Jonathan Edwards' Life: More Than A Sermon, Matthew Ryan Martin Apr 2003

Jonathan Edwards' Life: More Than A Sermon, Matthew Ryan Martin

Senior Honors Theses

Jonathan Edwards, born, (1703-1758), was a great man. He is often known only for a sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." This is unfortunate because followers of Christ should know this man's life. This paper focuses on Jonathan Edwards as a godly family man and on his missiological work.

An emphasis is not carefully analyzed by many. The research for this essay originated from the author's desire to know more about Mr. Edwards. The texts studied are The works of Jonathan Edwards, along with many scholarly books and essays. The main modern books used are from Perry …

Daniel: A Model For The Cultural Relevancy Of The Believer, Daniel Christopher Samms Apr 2003

Daniel: A Model For The Cultural Relevancy Of The Believer, Daniel Christopher Samms

Senior Honors Theses

Daniel's life in Babylon parallels the predicament of the church in the current culture. Just as the modern church has been placed in a culture that inhibits the worship of God, so Daniel was placed in a culture and kingdom that did the same. Because of his ability to impact his surrounding culture, this thesis looks to Daniel for principles on godly cultural relevancy. The first and largest part of this thesis follows the life of Daniel, citing key moments of his life, and noting his reaction to each situation. From Daniel's actions as well as from the results of …

Blackwell Publishing Ltd. Chondrocranial, Hyobranchial And Internal Oral Morphology In Larvae Of The Basal Bufonid Genus Melanophryniscus (Amphibia: Anura), Peter M. Larson, Rafael O. De Sá, Diego Arrieta

Biology Faculty Publications

Melanophryniscus is a genus of small toads inhabiting the southern portion of South America. This genus is considered basal within the family Bufonidae. Data on larval chondrocranial morphology do not exist for the genus and larval internal oral anatomy has only been described for a single species. Here, we describe chondrocranial and internal oral morphology in Melanophryniscus montevidensis, M. orejasmirandai and M. sanmartini. Chondrocranial morphology is similar among the species examined. Comparisons with other bufonids and with outgroup taxa suggest that the following chondrocranial characters may represent synapomorphies for the Bufonidae: free (or absent) ceratobranchial IV, a reduced …

Student Ecosystems Problem Solving With Computer Simulation, Melissa A. Howse

Dissertations

Computer simulations, such as the BioQUEST Environmental Decision Making (EDM) program, represent a viable supplement or alternative to traditional science teaching approaches. This study concentrated on the manner in which knowledge is acquired and then disseminated through the use of the simulations. In addition, the study took into account the nature of science by revealing what notions of ecosystems and simulation were revealed when students encountered concepts imparted to them via this method. The following research questions guided this study: (1) What content knowledge do students use to solve ecology problems? (2) What procedural knowledge do students use to solve …

Co-Catalytic Metallopeptidases As Pharmaceutical Targets, Richard C. Holz, Krzysztof P. Bzymek, Sabina I. Swierczek

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Understanding the reaction mechanism of co-catalytic metallopeptidases provides a starting point for the design and synthesis of new molecules that can be screened as potential pharmaceuticals. Many of the enzymes that contain co-catalytic metallo-active sites play important roles in cellular processes such as tissue repair, protein maturation, hormone level regulation, cell-cycle control and protein degradation. Therefore, these enzymes play central roles in several disease states including cancer, HIV, stroke, diabetes, bacterial infections, neurological processes, schizophrenia, seizure disorders, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The mechanism of AAP, an aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica, is one of the best-characterized examples of a metallopeptidase …

The Raft Of Odysseus: The Ethnographic Imagination Of Homer's Odyssey [Review], Erwin F. Cook Apr 2003

The Raft Of Odysseus: The Ethnographic Imagination Of Homer's Odyssey [Review], Erwin F. Cook

Classical Studies Faculty Research

In The Raft of Odysseus, Carol Dougherty wishes to read several major episodes of the Odyssey as ways of imagining colonial experience, and as informed by the discourse of colonial foundation. Odysseus can be compared to an ethnographer, who gains self-knowledge through a process of “decoding” a foreign culture and “recoding” it for one’s own, so that “the strange becomes familiar and the familiar strange” (p. 10). At the same time, he is also a colonist, whose experiences among the Phaeacians and Cyclopes offer complementary images of colonial encounters, and a traveling poet, who trades his stories for commercial …
