The 2001 National Agricultural, Food, And Public Policy Preference Survey: The South Dakota Perspective, Gary Taylor May 2003

The 2001 National Agricultural, Food, And Public Policy Preference Survey: The South Dakota Perspective, Gary Taylor

Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)

Federal government policies significantly affect the behavior of farmers in South Dakota, the North Central region, and the nation as a whole. In general, producers favor programs that provide income support and protect them from the full impact of free market adjustments. Farmers and ranchers in 27 states were surveyed during the spring of 200 l. The survey contains questions about farm income and risk management, conservation and environmental policies, trade, food labeling, the changing structure of agriculture, producer demographics, and a series of optional questions. In South Dakota, 1500 producers received surveys and 325 returned completed forms. Most producers …

Bcl-2 Family Members Inhibit Oxidative Stress-Induced Programmed Cell Death In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Shao-Rong Chen, David Dunigan, Martin Dickman May 2003

Bcl-2 Family Members Inhibit Oxidative Stress-Induced Programmed Cell Death In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Shao-Rong Chen, David Dunigan, Martin Dickman

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Selected antiapoptotic genes were expressed in baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) to evaluate cytoprotective effects during oxidative stress. When exposed to treatments resulting in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), including H2O2, menadione, or heat shock, wild-type yeast died and exhibited apoptotic-like characteristics, consistent with previous studies. Yeast strains were generated expressing nematode ced-9, human bcl-2, or chicken bcl-xl genes. These transformants tolerated a range of oxidative stresses, did not display features associated with apoptosis, and remained viable under conditions that were lethal to wildtype yeast. Yeast strains expressing a mutant antiapoptotic gene (bcl-2 …

Rhythmic Binding Of A White Collar-Containing Complex To The Frequency Promoter Is Inhibited By Frequency, Allan C. Froehlich, Jennifer J. Loros, Jay C. Dunlap

Dartmouth Scholarship

The biological clock of Neurospora crassa includes interconnected transcriptional and translational feedback loops that cause both the transcript and protein encoded by the frequency gene (frq) to undergo the robust daily oscillations in abundance, which are essential for clock function. To understand better the mechanism generating rhythmic frq transcript, reporter constructs were used to show that the oscillation in frq message is transcriptionally regulated, and a single cis-acting element in the frq promoter, the Clock Box (C box), is both necessary and sufficient for this rhythmic transcription. Nuclear protein extracts used in binding assays revealed that a White Collar (WC)-1- …

Technical Efficiency Of Australian Wool Production: Point And Confidence Interval Estimates, William C. Horrace May 2003

Technical Efficiency Of Australian Wool Production: Point And Confidence Interval Estimates, William C. Horrace

Economics - All Scholarship

A balanced panel of data is used to estimate technical efficiency, employing a fixed-effects stochastic frontier specification for wool producers in Australia. Both point estimates and confidence intervals for technical efficiency are reported. The confidence intervals are constructed using the multiple comparisons with the best (MCB) procedure of Horrace and Schmidt (1996, 2000). The confidence intervals make explicit the precision of the technical efficiency estimates and underscore the dangers of drawing inferences based solely on point estimates. Additionally, they allow identification of wool producers that are statistically efficient and those that are statistically inefficient. The data reveal at the 95% …

Ecomorphology Of Bats: Comparative And Experimental Approaches Relating Structural Design To Ecology, Sharon M. Swartz, Patricia W. Freeman, Elizabeth F. Stockwell May 2003

Ecomorphology Of Bats: Comparative And Experimental Approaches Relating Structural Design To Ecology, Sharon M. Swartz, Patricia W. Freeman, Elizabeth F. Stockwell

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The past several decades have seen the beginning of integration of discoveries in the ecology and morphology of bats into an ecomorphological whole that promises to be greater than the sum of its parts. However, achieving this integration is challenging. Each of the elements of this interdisciplinary field is, in itself, avast and complex subject. This book is a testament to the breadth and depth of ecological studies of bats. Morphological studies now extend be- yond descriptive anatomy in both outlook and method, and incorporate, for example, aspects of genetics, physiology, solid and fluid mechanics, and developmental biology. There is …

Interview No. 976, Florencio Magallanes

Combined Interviews

Mr. Magallanes briefly recalls his childhood during which time he went to school for only three years; he was hired as a bracero in 1954, and worked in cotton and beet fields; he worked in Pecos, Texas, where the living conditions were harsh; there were between 200-300 braceros living in the same barracks; the food service was terrible as well; sometimes there was not enough food for all the braceros, but they had to pay for the food regardless of whether they ate or not; whenever they had free time, they liked to drink beer and have races.

Analysis Of Intermolecular Rna-Rna Recombination By Rubella Virus, Sandra Adams, Wen Pin Tzeng, Min Hsin Chen, Teryl K. Frey May 2003

Analysis Of Intermolecular Rna-Rna Recombination By Rubella Virus, Sandra Adams, Wen Pin Tzeng, Min Hsin Chen, Teryl K. Frey

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

To investigate whether rubella virus (RUB) undergoes intermolecular RNA-RNA recombination, cells were cotransfected with pairs of in vitro transcripts from genomic cDNA plasmid vectors engineered to contain nonoverlapping deletions: the replicative transcript maintained the 5′-proximal nonstructural (NS) ORF (which contained the replicase, making it RNA replication competent), had a deletion in the 3′-proximal structural protein (SP) ORF, and maintained the 3′ end of the genome, including the putative 3′ cis-acting elements (CSE), while the nonreplicative transcript consisted of the 3′ half of the genome including the SP-ORF and 3′ CSE. Cotransfection yielded plaque-forming virus that synthesized the standard genomic and …

Rzsweep: A New Volume-Rendering Technique For Uniform Rectilinear Datasets, Gautam Chaudhary May 2003

Rzsweep: A New Volume-Rendering Technique For Uniform Rectilinear Datasets, Gautam Chaudhary

Theses and Dissertations

A great challenge in the volume-rendering field is to achieve high-quality images in an acceptable amount of time. In the area of volume rendering, there is always a trade-off between speed and quality. Applications where only high-quality images are acceptable often use the ray-casting algorithm, but this method is computationally expensive and typically achieves low frame rates. The work presented here is RZSweep, a new volume-rendering algorithm for uniform rectilinear datasets, that gives high-quality images in a reasonable amount of time. In this algorithm a plane sweeps the vertices of the implicit grid of regular datasets in depth order, projecting …

Manipulation Of Microbial Metabolic Pathways For The Reduction Of Sulfide Production, Charles David Zuller May 2003

Manipulation Of Microbial Metabolic Pathways For The Reduction Of Sulfide Production, Charles David Zuller

Theses and Dissertations

A bacterial additives treatment experiment was conducted to assess the microbial and biochemical changes in stored swine manure. Nitrate salt was added to a slurry of swine waste collected from a waste storage pit to identify the effects of varying levels of nitrate upon the microbial community and the resulting metabolic changes. This research was an attempt to reduce the formation of odorous sulfur-containing compounds and to increase the formation of odorless nitrogen gas by manipulating the metabolic pathways in anaerobic decomposition of the organic matter within manure. Sulfide production from swine wastewater was reduced approximately 45 percent with the …
