Unlv Transmutation Research Program Proposal Year Iii: Design And Evaluation Of Processes For Fuel Fabrication, Georg F. Mauer

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

The objective of this project is the design and evaluation of manufacturing processes for transmuter fuel fabrication. The large-scale deployment of remote fabrication and refabrication processes will be required for all transmutation scenarios. Current program emphasis is on a five-year effort to determine the feasibility of transmutation as a technology to limit the need for repository storage of spent commercial fuel. The evaluation of the fabrication processes will create a decision support data base to document design, operations, and costs. Fabrication processes required for different fuel types differ in terms of equipment types, throughput, and cost. Differential cost Implications of …

Using Texture Synthesis For Non-Photorealistic Shading From Paint Samples, Christopher D. Kulla, James D. Tucek, Reynold J. Bailey, Cindy M. Grimm

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper presents several methods for shading meshes from scanned paint samples that represent dark to light transitions. Our techniques emphasize artistic control of brush stroke texture and color. We first demonstrate how the texture of the paint sample can be separated from its color gradient. We demonstrate three methods, two real-time and one off-line for producing rendered, shaded images from the texture samples. All three techniques use texture synthesis to generate additional paint samples. Finally, we develop metrics for evaluating how well each method achieves our goal in terms of texture similarity, shading correctness and temporal coherence.

Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopic Imaging Of Prostate Histopathology, Daniel Celestino Fernandez May 2003

Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopic Imaging Of Prostate Histopathology, Daniel Celestino Fernandez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Vibrational spectroscopic imaging techniques have emerged as powerful methods of obtaining sensitive spatially resolved molecular information from microscopic samples. The data obtained from such techniques reflect the intrinsic molecular chemistry of the sample and in particular yield a wealth of information regarding functional groups which comprise the majority of important molecules found in cells and tissue. These spectroscopic imaging techniques also have the advantage of acquisition of large numbers of spectral measurements which allow statistical analysis of spectral features which are characteristic of the normal histological state as well as different pathologic disease states. Databases of large numbers of samples …

Heat Exchanger Fouling In Phosphoric Acid Evaporators - Evaluation Of Field Data -, R. M. Behbahani, H. Müller-Steinhagen, M. Jamialahmadi

Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning: Fundamentals and Applications

Multistage evaporators are frequently used in phosphoric acid plants to increase the concentration of dilute phosphoric acid to 52-55 wt% P2O5. The concentrated phosphoric acid solution is supersaturated with respect to calcium sulfate. As a result, part of the calcium sulfate in the liquor deposits on the heat exchanger tube walls. Since the thermal conductivity of these scales is very low, thin deposits can create a significant resistance to heat transfer. Therefore, regular cleaning of heat exchangers is required, frequently at less than biweekly intervals. As the major costs in modern phosphoric acid plants are the …

The Role And Spirituality In Athabascan Recovery And Sobriety, Dolores Gregory Scoville May 2003

The Role And Spirituality In Athabascan Recovery And Sobriety, Dolores Gregory Scoville

Psychology

It is well documented that Alaska leads the nation in alcohol dependence and abuse. There are studies that document the high abuse levels among Alaska Natives along with corresponding economic costs and lost productivity. The purpose of this study was: (a) to determine the definition of spirituality of a purposive sample of Athabascan Indians of Interior Alaska and (b) to discover what role spirituality plays in Athabascan recovery and sobriety. Nine life history interviews were examined from the People Awakening Project at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. A Grounded Theory Analysis was used to yield culturally relevant results. A definition …

More Than A Shelter: A Study Of Indigenous Dwellings And Contemporary, Affordable Housing In Rural Alaska, Esther Marcell Combs

Rural Development

The purpose of this study was to pursue an innovative idea to address the need for safe, affordable housing in the rural, subarctic area of the State of Alaska. A three pronged approach for data gathering included an extensive historical review of early indigenous cultures and dwelling design; a review of the roles of federal and state governments and their impact on the political economy and lifestyles of rural indigenous people; and interviews of homeowners to obtain their comments, preferences, and suggestions for design features in a home. The conclusions drawn from the findings indicated that the most important feature …

Temporal And Spatial Variability Of Sinking Particles In The Southeast Bering Sea, Stacy Lynn Smith May 2003

Temporal And Spatial Variability Of Sinking Particles In The Southeast Bering Sea, Stacy Lynn Smith

Marine Biology

The factors affecting the timing, quantity and fate of southeastern Bering Sea primary production, including coupling to higher trophic levels, were investigated via sinking particles collected using sediment traps. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition and lipid composition of zooplankton and sinking particles were measured for middle (M2) and outer (M3) shelf samples collected during 1997-2000. The quantity collected by the M2 sediment trap was high in late summer and fall, as well as during spring blooms, and was much greater than that collected at M3. M2 zooplankton and trap samples were enriched in ¹⁵N and ¹³C over those from …

Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning: The Relationship Between Alexandrium Abundance And Psp Toxins On Kodiak Island, Alaska, Julie A. Matweyou May 2003

Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning: The Relationship Between Alexandrium Abundance And Psp Toxins On Kodiak Island, Alaska, Julie A. Matweyou

Marine Biology

Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) events have severe negative impacts on Alaska commercial shellfish fisheries as well as recreational and subsistence harvests. This study, designed to improve existing PSP monitoring programs, involved the use of a rapid sandwich hybridization assay to detect and quantify the relative abundance of Alexandrium catenella based on species-specific LSU rRNA targeted oligonucleotide probes. Blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) toxicity, expressed as saxitoxin equivalents, was determined using the ³H-Saxitoxin receptor binding assay. Shellfish toxicity was relatively low in both 2000 and 2001 compared to historically high values on Kodiak, but exhibited pronounced late spring and late summer peaks, …

Migrant Stopover Ecology And Resident Resilience After Hurricane Iris In A Neotropical Bird Community, Andrew Bryant Johnson May 2003

Migrant Stopover Ecology And Resident Resilience After Hurricane Iris In A Neotropical Bird Community, Andrew Bryant Johnson

Biological Sciences

I conducted two avian ecology studies in southern Belize. I examined mass gains by Nearctic-Neotropic migrants in forest near the Gulf of Honduras, a potential ecological barrier to migration. Condition indices (mass/wing chord or tail length) were used to estimate net diel mass gains in migrant species. Ten migrant species apparently were fattening at the site, but some species not fattening at the site had accumulated fat loads elsewhere, and this region appears to provide important resources for transient migrants. I also studied the resilience of a marked resident bird community after Hurricane Iris severely altered the habitat. Given the …

Epidemiological Survey On The Prevalence Of Nosocomial Infections Caused By Drug Resistant Bacteria, Jelita Ann Green May 2003

Epidemiological Survey On The Prevalence Of Nosocomial Infections Caused By Drug Resistant Bacteria, Jelita Ann Green

Theses (Pre-2016)

Nosocomial infections have been recognized for over a century as a critical problem affecting the quality of health care and a principal source of adverse health care outcomes. The National Nosocomial Infections Surveillance System defines a nosocomial infection as (1) a localized or systemic condition that results from adverse reaction to the presence of an infectious agent(s) or its toxin(s) and (2) that was not present or incubating at the time a patient is admitted to a hospital. Today, nosocomial infections affect over 2 million patients annually in the United States at a cost in excess of $4.5 billion (Hormaeche, …

Thermoregulating Ability And Minimum Flight Temperature In Interior Alaska Dragonflies (Odonata: Anisoptera), Todd Sformo May 2003

Thermoregulating Ability And Minimum Flight Temperature In Interior Alaska Dragonflies (Odonata: Anisoptera), Todd Sformo

Biological Sciences

The use of operative environmental temperature (Te) has been a major advance in the study of thermal ecology. I review the use of operative temperature in thermal biology with an emphasis on insects. Then I use data from dragonflies in Interior Alaska (Odonata: Anisoptera) to compare the efficacy of operative and ambient temperature when examining thermoregulating ability. I conclude that although the use of Te may provide more accurate measures of thermoregulation under specific environmental conditions, the use of ambient temperature usually leads to the same conclusions about thermoregulating ability. I next examine the relationships between thermoregulating ability, minimum flight …

Factors Influencing The Productivity Of Peregrine Falcons (Falco Peregrinus Anatum) In The Fortymile Wild And Scenic River Corridor, Alaska, Jefferson M. Jacobs May 2003

Factors Influencing The Productivity Of Peregrine Falcons (Falco Peregrinus Anatum) In The Fortymile Wild And Scenic River Corridor, Alaska, Jefferson M. Jacobs

Biological Sciences

I conducted the first comprehensive occupancy and productivity surveys of Falcon peregrinus on the Fortymile River during 2000 and 2001. I tested feather samples of nine nestlings for mercury contamination, examined effects of human disturbance, and assessed correlations of nest productivity to aspect and distance from ponds. Twenty and 22 nests were occupied in 2000 and 2001 and productivity averaged 0.88 and 1.33 nestlings per nest respectively. Mean feather mercury concentration was 3.85 ppm, and ranged from 1.88 ppm to 7.13 ppm. High variability in timing and intensity of disturbances and limited sample sizes precluded a study of disturbance effects. …

Food, Sex, Death, And Quest: The Literary Legacy Of Sir John Franklin, Maureen Eleanor Long May 2003

Food, Sex, Death, And Quest: The Literary Legacy Of Sir John Franklin, Maureen Eleanor Long

Arctic and Northern Studies

The story of Sir John Franklin, nineteenth-century British Arctic explorer, has been reinterpreted and reworked by poets, novelists, essayists, and dramatists for more than a century and half. This thesis is an attempt to discover the character and significance of the literary legacy of Sir John Franklin by exploring authors' uses of four common tropes: food, sex, death, and quest. In analyzing these tropes, this thesis focuses primarily on five works of contemporary Canadian literature: Margaret Atwood's short story, "The Age of Lead"; Gwendolyn MacEwen's radio verse play, Terror and Erebus; Geoff Kavanagh's play, Ditch; Mordecai Richler's novel, Solomon Gursky …

Assessment And Prediction Of Electroshocked-Induced Injury In North American Fishes, Farland Michael Holliman May 2003

Assessment And Prediction Of Electroshocked-Induced Injury In North American Fishes, Farland Michael Holliman

Fisheries

Electrofishing has served as an efficient method for scientific sampling of freshwater fishes since the mid-1900s, but it has become apparent since the 1990's that electroshock can cause fish injury. Electroshock-induced fish injury (damage to hard or soft tissues), which is primarily manifested as vertebral fracture or hemorrhage (broken blood vessels) along the backbone, can be a critical determinant of fish survival. The ability to predict factors influencing fish injury rate (the proportion of. injured fish in a sample) would be very useful to biologists. To test the null hypothesis of no effect of electrical waveform (W), voltage gradient (E), …

Effects Of Fish Wheels On Fall Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus Keta): Non-Esterified Fatty Acids And Plasma Indices Of Stress, Peter Mallon Cleary May 2003

Effects Of Fish Wheels On Fall Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus Keta): Non-Esterified Fatty Acids And Plasma Indices Of Stress, Peter Mallon Cleary

Fisheries

The effect of tagging and capture on plasma concentrations of cortisol, glucose, lactate, chloride, and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) in chum salmon was investigated. Adult chum salmon were captured in August-September 2000 and 2001 with a fish wheel on the lower Kantishna River. Tagged and untagged fish were subsequently captured on the lower Toklat River and sampled for blood. Tagged fish (males and females) at the Toklat recovery fish wheels had lower (P <0.04) plasma cortisol concentrations than untagged fish. Glucose concentrations were lower (P = 0.03) in tagged than untagged males but did not differ between tagged and untagged females. Lactate and chloride concentrations did not differ between tagged and untagged fish. Tagged chum salmon captured at the Toklat River recovery wheels had lower concentrations of NEFA (P = 0.02). Taken together, these results suggest there is a metabolic cost from capture and tagging using fish wheels.

Trigeminal Somatosensory Innervation Of The Head Of A Teleost Fish With Particular Reference To Nociception, Lynne U. Sneddon May 2003

Trigeminal Somatosensory Innervation Of The Head Of A Teleost Fish With Particular Reference To Nociception, Lynne U. Sneddon

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

Trigeminal somatosensory receptors have not been characterised in teleost fish and studies in elasmobranchs have failed to identify nociceptors. The present study examined the trigeminal nerve of a teleost fish, the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to determine what types of somatosensory receptors were present on the head of the trout specifically searching for nociceptors. Single unit recordings were made from receptive fields on the head of the fish innervated by the trigeminal nerve. Each receptive field was tested for sensitivity to mechanical, thermal and chemical stimulation. Five different receptor types were found: fast adapting receptors responding to mechanical stimulation; slowly …

Collection Development Of Non-Christian Religious Holiday Books In Elementary School Libraries, Kelly Bigley Craig May 2003

Collection Development Of Non-Christian Religious Holiday Books In Elementary School Libraries, Kelly Bigley Craig

Theses and Dissertations

While many Christian holiday books for children are widely reviewed and available from mainstream publishers, it is more difficult to find and evaluate books about non-Christian holidays. Elementary library collections may under-represent non-Christian religious books because of a lack of school library media specialists' personal knowledge about non-Christian holidays. This study surveyed school library media specialists through a written questionnaire about the variety and size of their library's current collection of non-fiction books about non-Christian religious holidays, and determined how school library media specialists approach collection development in this area. The sample and population consisted of 124 elementary public school …
