Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

Novel synthases and the corresponding nucleic acids encoding such synthases are disclosed herein. Such synthases possess an active site pocket that includes key amino acid residues that are modified to generate desired terpenoid reaction intermediates and products. Synthase modifications are designed based on, e.g., the three-dimensional coordinates of tobacco 5-epi-aristolochene synthase, with or without a substrate bound in the active site.

Dartmouth Scholarship

The induction of an acute inflammatory response followed by the release of polypeptide cytokines and growth factors from peripheral blood monocytes has been implicated in mediating the response to vascular injury. Because the Cu2+-binding proteins IL-1alpha and fibroblast growth factor 1 are exported into the extracellular compartment in a stress-dependent manner by using intracellular Cu2+ to facilitate the formation of S100A13 heterotetrameric complexes and these signal peptideless polypeptides have been implicated as regulators of vascular injury in vivo, we examined the ability of Cu2+ chelation to repress neointimal thickening in response to injury. We observed that the oral administration of …

Is Hp1 An Rna Detector That Functions Both In Repression And Activation?, Rebecca Kellum

Heterochromatin is defined as regions of compact chromatin that persist throughout the cell cycle (Heitz, 1928). The earliest cytological observations of heterochromatin were followed by ribonucleotide labeling experiments that showed it to be transcriptionally inert relative to the more typical euchromatic regions that decondense during interphase. Genetic studies of rearrangements that place euchromatic genes next to blocks of heterochromatin also pointed out the repressive nature of heterochromatin (Grigliatti, 1991; and references therein). The discovery of the heterochromatin-enriched protein heterochromatin protein 1 (HP1) by Elgin and co-workers in the mid-1980s suggested that the distinct cytological features of this chromatin may be …

This essay from the Times Literary Supplement (23 May 2003) reviews books on Lincoln's speeches and writings, particularly the Second Inaugural Address. It examines the transition from the First Inaugural Address to the Second Inaugural Address, finally focusing on how Lincoln seeks to steer between moral relativism about the war - each side does as it sees right - and moral absolutism.

Ecuador: Lawsuit Filed Against Texaco, Notisur Writers

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

A US legal team filed a billion-dollar lawsuit in an Ecuadoran court on May 7 against US oil giant ChevronTexaco. The plaintiffs, a group of Ecuadoran Indians, accuse the company of destroying large areas of rain forest in Ecuador and contaminating local land and rivers. They say the pollution has increased the incidence of cancer among the local population. ChevronTexaco rejects the allegations and says the company met all its obligations under Ecuadoran law. The suit was filed in the Corte Superior de Justicia in the Amazonian town of Lago Agrio, 185 km northeast of Quito. Attorneys said the trial …

Oscillating population data often exhibit cycle irregularities such as episodes of damped oscillation and abrupt changes of cycle phase. The prediction of such irregularities is of interest in applications ranging from food production to wildlife management. We use concepts from dynamical systems theory to present a model-based method for quantifying the risk of impending cycle irregularity.

Stuttering Awareness, Joshua Bodman May 2003

Stuttering Awareness, Joshua Bodman

Theses

This thesis project will provide information about stuttering and attempt to eliminate some of the stigmas attached to the disorder. By increasing awareness, more light will be cast on stuttering, eliminating some of the burden of disfluency. The disorder will no longer be a mystery if people understand that stuttering is composed of concrete thoughts, feelings and actions. A publicized campaign will dispel some of the negative views of this disorder and reduce the pressures that are created in different speaking situations. These stuttering awareness goals will be disseminated through a collection of design applications. The awareness campaign as presented …
