Short Pulse Laser Propagation Through Tissues, Champak Das, Ashish Trivedi, Kunal Mitra, Tuan Vo-Dinh
Short Pulse Laser Propagation Through Tissues, Champak Das, Ashish Trivedi, Kunal Mitra, Tuan Vo-Dinh
Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications
An experimental and numerical study is performed to analyze short pulse laser propagation through tissue phantoms without and with inhomogeneities/tumors imbedded in it. Short pulse laser probing techniques has distinct advantages over conventional very large pulse width or cw lasers primarily due to the additional information conveyed about the tissue interior by the temporal variation of the observed signal. Both the scattered temporal transmitted and reflected optical signals are measured experimentally using a streak camera for samples irradiated with a short pulse laser source. Parametric study involving different scattering and absorption coefficients of tissue phantoms and inhomogeneities as well as …

Dairy Policy And Price Volatility, Charles F. Nicholson, Thomas Fiddaman
Dairy Policy And Price Volatility, Charles F. Nicholson, Thomas Fiddaman
Agribusiness
The US dairy industry is shaped by a patchwork of regulations accumulated over a long history of intervention to achieve various, sometimes conflicting, policy goals. Price supports have long been a central feature of dairy markets, but were largely withdrawn beginning in 1988. Since that time, there has been a dramatic increase in the variability of farm milk and milk product prices. The origins and desirability of volatility has been the subject of much debate; unfortunately models in existence to date have shed little light on the question due to their adoption of essentially non-dynamic methods. This article introduces a …

Ascaris Suum: Cdna Microarray Analysis Of 4th Stage Larvae (L4) During Self-Cure From The Intestine, Motoko Morimoto, Dante Zarlenga, Hunter Beard, Nadim Alkharouf, Benjamin F. Matthews, Joseph F. Urban Jr.
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
There is spontaneous cure of a large portion of Ascaris suum 4th-stage larvae (L4) from the jejunum of infected pigs between 14 and 21 days after inoculation (DAI). Those L4 that remain in the jejunum continue to develop while those that have moved to the ileum are eventually expelled from the intestines. Although increases in intestinal mucosal mast cells and changes in localhost immunity are coincidental with spontaneous cure, the population of L4 that continue to develop in the jejunum may counteract host protective mechanisms by the differential production of factors related to parasitism. To this end, a cDNA library …

Use Of Silica-Supported Adsorbents, Modified Silica Gel, Modified Montmorillonite Ksf And Magnetite In The Remediation Of Selected Heavy Metals From Aqueous Media, Craig Alcindor Ivan Bowe
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Pollution of the earth's water resources, including freshwater sources such as lakes and rivers, by heavy metals have been a detriment to the environment for as long as the industrial age of man. As these metallic pollutants accumulate in the supply of precious groundwater and drinking water the need for clean-up technologies to combat the increasing threat is becoming of more importance to government and industry alike. Previous work has established the possibility of using known chelating agents, such as LIX-54® supported on silica gel in the removal of selected heavy metal ions such as copper(II), nickel(II) , and cadmium(II) …
Organizational Office Space In The Virtual Age: The Role Of Shared Space In Communication, Sheila Gobes-Ryan
Organizational Office Space In The Virtual Age: The Role Of Shared Space In Communication, Sheila Gobes-Ryan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis takes a phenomenological approach to the examination of the organizational need for shared office space. Questions are developed in a reflexive narrative that introduces challenges to the assumption that space is a given in organizations. The narrative also uses the process of questioning this basis assumption to develop a new understanding of the role of space in organizations in supporting the development of common language needed for the creation of organizational knowledge. Key ideas from systems theory, autopoiesis, organizational theory, semiotics, and psychology are utilized as resources developing the ideas.

A Molecular Approach To Assessing Meiofauna Diversity In Marine Sediments, Heather C. Hamilton
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A Molecular Approach to Assessing Meiofauna Diversity in Marine Sediments Heather C. Hamilton Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine if a molecular approach could be applied to calculating the diversity of meiofauna in marine sediments from two sites in Tampa Bay, FL, similar to the approach of McCaig et al, 1999 in calculating the diversity of microbes in pastureland soils. The approach includes extracting total DNA directly from the sediment and amplifying the 18S rRNA gene by PCR. Clone libraries from the 18S gene would be created for each site and 300 sequences from each clone library …

Pocahontas Reclaimed: The Powhatans' Theatrical Rebuttal To Disney's Revisionist Myth, Barbara E. Gardner
Pocahontas Reclaimed: The Powhatans' Theatrical Rebuttal To Disney's Revisionist Myth, Barbara E. Gardner
Theses and Dissertations
This study compares the content of play The One Called Pocahontas to the Walt Disney film Pocahontas. The author examined the accepted history of the Powhatan woman known as Pocahontas in relation to the "infotainment" provided by both the play and the movie. The study examines the objections to the Walt Disney movie Pocahontas and poses them as motivating factors for the Powhatan tribe's decision to use theatre to respond to the inaccuracies they perceived in the movie. The primary research methods of the study include an analysis of existing literature and internet sites about Pocahontas, an interview with …

Ray Thomas Interview For The Lest We Forget Collection Of Oral Histories, Ray Thomas, Jeff Moyer
Lest We Forget (MS-396)
Jeff Moyer interviewed Ray Thomas on July 15, 2003 about his work with the mentally ill and developmentally disabled. The interview was part of the Lest We Forget Collection of oral histories that was created to capture the stories of those involved with mental health and those with developmental disabilities. The project focused on stories and experiences of people from Ohio that lived at, worked in, or dealt with large institutions and the modern movement to smaller home settings and modern treatment of mental illness and developmental disabilities.
