Following The Man On The Clapham Omnibus: Social Science Evidence In Malpractice Litigation, Richard O. Lempert Jul 2003

Following The Man On The Clapham Omnibus: Social Science Evidence In Malpractice Litigation, Richard O. Lempert

Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009

This article responds to proposals to admit statistical evidence from empirical studies of actual health care practices to prove prevailing health practice standards in malpractice litigation by arguing that the case for doing so has numerous weaknesses that advocates of admitting such data commonly ignore. A fundamental concern is that the standard of practice defense co-evolved with prevailing modes of proof and might have been different had proof through experts not allowed for an aspirational as well as an empirical element to reach the jury. The article also argues that generating reliable statistical evidence of standard medical practice can be …

The Economics Of Managing Wildlife Disease, Richard D. Horan, Christopher A. Wolf Jul 2003

The Economics Of Managing Wildlife Disease, Richard D. Horan, Christopher A. Wolf

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

The spread of infectious disease among and between wild and domesticated animals has become a major problem worldwide. Upon analyzing the dynamics of wildlife growth and infection when the diseased animals cannot be identified separately from healthy wildlife prior to the kill, we find that harvest-based strategies alone have no impact on disease transmission. Other controls that directly influence disease transmission and/or mortality are required. Next, we analyze the socially optimal management of infectious wildlife. The model is applied to the problem of bovine tuberculosis among Michigan white-tailed deer, with non-selective harvests and supplemental feeding being the control variables. Using …

Some Limitations And Possibilities Of Image And Form, Susan Forster Jul 2003

Some Limitations And Possibilities Of Image And Form, Susan Forster

Theses

The primary goal for this thesis experience is to examine the connections and correlations between two-dimensional imagery and threedimensional form. The concept for this exploration came from genuine personal interest and sensitivity for multiple materials, techniques, and the dynamics and energy they create in relation to each other and their environment. My intention was to create a total environment in which the viewer receives not just a single frame perspective of a visual image or object, but instead becomes an interactive part of the space. This need to expand my work beyond a single object or pictorial frame of painting …

Interpreting Bids From A Vickrey Auction When There Are Public Good Attributes, Sean P. Hurley, James B. Kliebenstein Jul 2003

Interpreting Bids From A Vickrey Auction When There Are Public Good Attributes, Sean P. Hurley, James B. Kliebenstein

Agribusiness

This paper provides a model that allows for interpreting bids in a Vickrey auction when the good has public good attributes. It also examines information obtained from a Vickrey auction, which collected consumer’s willingness-to-pay for pork products that had embedded environmental attributes, and applies the new interpretation to the bids.

Dairy Cow Ownership And Child Nutritional Status In Kenya, Charles F. Nicholson, Lucy Mwangi, Steven J. Staal, Philip K. Thornton Jul 2003

Dairy Cow Ownership And Child Nutritional Status In Kenya, Charles F. Nicholson, Lucy Mwangi, Steven J. Staal, Philip K. Thornton

Agribusiness

This study examines the hypothesis that dairy cow ownership improves child nutritional status. Using household data from coastal and highland Kenya, three econometric model formulations are estimated. Positive impacts on chronic malnutrition are observed for coastal Kenya. No negative effects on acute or chronic malnutrition are found for either region.

A Tale Of Two Premiums—Examining Bids From A Multiple Round Vickrey Auction With Differing Information Sets, Sean P. Hurley, James B. Kliebenstein Jul 2003

A Tale Of Two Premiums—Examining Bids From A Multiple Round Vickrey Auction With Differing Information Sets, Sean P. Hurley, James B. Kliebenstein

Agribusiness

Two definitions of willingness-to-pay derived from a Vickrey auction with multi-product and multiple rounds with different information sets are examined. These definitions are examined in the context of valuing pork products with embedded environmental attributes and we show how information can have adverse effects on a base product of comparison.

Local Applications Of The National Livestock And Poultry Environmental Stewardship Curriculum, Diane Huntrods, Richard K. Koelsch, Frank Humenik

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

This paper introduces the LPES curriculum project, summarizing the curriculum development process, the final curriculum materials, and the outreach activities. Following an overview of the LPES Curriculum Impact Survey, the authors will present representative examples of uses and modifications made of the LPES curriculum as it is used with targeted audiences. This model for utilizing national expertise to address state and local educational needs may have benefit in other extension education programs as land grant university resources decrease. The paper concludes with a discussion of lessons learned from this national extension education curriculum development effort.

T-Splines And T-Nurccs, Thomas W. Sederberg, Jianmin Zheng, Almaz Bakenov, Ahmad Nasri Jul 2003

T-Splines And T-Nurccs, Thomas W. Sederberg, Jianmin Zheng, Almaz Bakenov, Ahmad Nasri

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a generalization of non-uniform B-spline surfaces called T-splines. T-spline control grids permit T-junctions, so lines of control points need not traverse the entire control grid. T-splines support many valuable operations within a consistent framework, such as local refinement, and the merging of several B-spline surfaces that have different knot vectors into a single gap-free model. The paper focuses on T-splines of degree three, which are C2 (in the absence of multiple knots). T-NURCCs (Non-Uniform Rational Catmull-Clark Surfaces with T-junctions) are a superset of both T-splines and Catmull-Clark surfaces. Thus, a modeling program for T-NURCCs can handle any …

Monopoly Power In The Electronic Information Industry: Why, And So What?, Curt A. Hessler Jul 2003

Monopoly Power In The Electronic Information Industry: Why, And So What?, Curt A. Hessler

ExpressO

This "law and economics" article diagnoses why monopoly power infects so many markets in the electronic media, communications, and information technology industries (collectively the "Industry"),and recommends changes to prevailing intellectual property and antitrust doctrines to remedy this problem.

The analysis focuses on a single "norm" -- the maximization of economic value, as defined by standard welfare economic theory. Identifying three distinct functions that operate throughout this otherwise diverse Industry -- authoring, publishing, and distribution -- the article notes that two economic peculiarities characterize most Industry markets: the technical feasibility of "non-rivalrous use" of digitized information products, and the frequent "creative …

The Galapagos Giant Tortoise (Geochelone Elephantopus) And The Spread Of Invasive Plants, Anne D. Schultz Jul 2003

The Galapagos Giant Tortoise (Geochelone Elephantopus) And The Spread Of Invasive Plants, Anne D. Schultz

Biology ETDs

Island ecosystems are commonly thought to be more vulnerable to the effects of invasive species than mainland systems. In recent decades, the number of exotic plants known to be present in the Galapagos archipelago has increased exponentially. Several of these plants are aggressive invaders that pose a threat to the biodiversity of the islands. Two of these plant species, Passiflora edulis Sims and Psidium guajava L. were introduced to Santa Cruz Island during the 20th century. Both pose a threat to the floristic diversity of the National Park land on Santa Cruz Island.

This paper explores the role played by …

Synopsis Of The New World Genera Of Anomalini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae) And Description Of A New Genus From Costa Rica And Nicaragua, Mary Liz Jameson, Aura Paucar-Cabrera, Angel Solis

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

We describe a new genus of anomaline scarab, Anomalorhina (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Anomalini) from Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Anomala turrialbana Ohaus is transferred into this genus, and a new species, Anomalorhina osaensis, is described. Anomalorhina is characterized by the clypeal apex that is abruptly reflexed, the base of the frons that has prominent tubercles in males, the pronotum with a depressed fovea in males, and the pronotum with the apical bead posteriorly produced and V-shaped at the middle in females. We summarize the biological importance of the 16 genera of New World anomaline scarabs, including comments on agricultural pests, …
