French Quality And Eco-Labeling Schemes: Do They Also Benefit The Environment?, Thomas Dobbs, Genevieve Nquyen, Sherry Bertramsen, Bruno Legagneux

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

In this paper, results are reported for analyses we recently conducted to examine the environmental effects of major 'quality' and 'eco-labeling' schemes in use in the Midi-Pyrenees region of the south of France. Schemes analyzed are described in the next section. Following that, the data and methods of analysis are explained. Next, results of statistical analyses are presented. These results are complemented by qualitative results drawn from in-depth case studies of three food quality schemes. Conclusions and policy implications are presented in the last section of the paper.

Salicylic Acid Attenuates Virulence In Endovascular Infections By Targeting Global Regulatory Pathways In Staphylococcus Aureus, Leon Iri Kupferwasser, Michael R. Yeaman, Cynthia C. Nast, Deborah Kupferwasser, Yan-Qiong Xiong, Marco Palma, Ambrose L. Cheung, Arnold S. Bayer

Dartmouth Scholarship

Aspirin has been previously shown to reduce the in vivo virulence of Staphylococcus aureus in experimental endocarditis, through antiplatelet and antimicrobial mechanisms. In the present study, salicylic acid, the major in vivo metabolite of aspirin, mitigated two important virulence phenotypes in both clinical and laboratory S. aureus strains: α-hemolysin secretion and fibronectin binding in vitro. In addition, salicylic acid reduced the expression of the α-hemolysin gene promoter, hla, and the fibronectin gene promoter, fnbA. Transcriptional analysis, fluorometry, and flow cytometry revealed evidence of salicylic acid–mediated activation of the stress-response gene sigB. Expression of the sigB-repressible global …

More On The Need To Get The Basics Right: Population Indices, Richard M. Engeman Jul 2003

More On The Need To Get The Basics Right: Population Indices, Richard M. Engeman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

On the grounds of "the need to get the basics right in wildlife field studies," Anderson (2001:1294-1297) recently included a general condemnation of the use of population indices. My purpose in this brief note is to add a few paragraphs of my thoughts to the comments by Anderson (2001) with respect to indexing animal populations. In general, I agree with the quantitative concepts described by Anderson (2001); however, I would like to place his comments into a broader perspective of general statistical rigor, without condemning the use of population indices if they are appropriately constructed.

Red Lasers Are Ineffective For Dispersing Deer At Night, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Michael J. Pipas, Paul B. Fioranelli, Scott J. Werner, Bradley F. Blackwell

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Populations of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and the number of deer-human conflicts have increased in recent years, emphasizing the need for efficient and inexpensive methods to reduce site-specific deer damage. Recent research using laser technology to disperse a variety of bird species has yielded promising results, prompting wildlife professionals and the public to question whether lasers could play a role in reducing damage and conflict with mammals, primarily deer. We evaluated 2 red lasers (63-650 nm) to determine their effectiveness as devices to frighten deer. No differences occurred in flight response between lasers or between the control and …

Characteristics Of Grit In Canada Goose Gizzards, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Michael J. Lavelle, Kirk J. Shively

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

In many localities, Canada geese (Branta canadensis) have habituated to urban settings and their populations are increasing. Reproductive inhibitors contained in synthetic grit could play a role in integrated Canada goose management. We describe and quantity the physical characteristics of natural grit collected from the gizzards of Canada geese from 4 regions of the United States. The average grit sample had a weight of 14.26 g, a volume of 2.45 ml, a grit-particle count of 1,419, and a soil weight of 6.85 g. The average grit particle measured 2.02 mm long and 1.52 mm wide, and had an …

Measuring Adult Criminal Victimization: Findings From The Anchorage Adult Criminal Victimization Survey, Matthew Giblin, N/A Alaska Justice Statistical Analysis Center Jul 2003

Measuring Adult Criminal Victimization: Findings From The Anchorage Adult Criminal Victimization Survey, Matthew Giblin, N/A Alaska Justice Statistical Analysis Center

AJSAC reports

Since 1973, the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) has been administered annually to a national sample of households. The survey captures unreported or underreported criminal events that are not available using official crime data such as the Uniform Crime Reports. However, the data collected are most useful in identifying crime trends nationwide. The national scope of the survey makes it impossible to extract crime data for smaller geographic areas, thus limiting its utility for Anchorage residents and policymakers with criminal justice concerns. To compensate for this limitation, the Justice Center at the University of Alaska Anchorage administered a local version …

Dermal Absorption Of A Dilute Aqueous Solution Of Malathion, John E. Scharf Md Jul 2003

Dermal Absorption Of A Dilute Aqueous Solution Of Malathion, John E. Scharf Md

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Malathion is a commonly used organophosphate pesticide on field crops, fruits, nut trees, vegetables, livestock, agricultural premises, and land. The approved uses also include mosquito and medfly control. These uses can result in human skin contact. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the human skin absorption of malathion for the purpose of assessing the risks associated with aqueous solution exposures following applications. Aerial applications can result in solubilized malathion in swimming pools and other waters that may be contacted. Human volunteers were selected and exposed to aqueous solutions of malathion at various concentrations. Participants submerged their arms and …

Matgat: An Application That Generates Similarity/Identity Matrices Using Protein Or Dna Sequences, James Campanella, Ledion Bitincka, John Smalley

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Background: The rapid increase in the amount of protein and DNA sequence information available has become almost overwhelming to researchers. So much information is now accessible that high-quality, functional gene analysis and categorization has become a major goal for many laboratories. To aid in this categorization, there is a need for non-commercial software that is able to both align sequences and also calculate pairwise levels of similarity/identity. Results: We have developed MatGAT (Matrix Global Alignment Tool), a simple, easy to use computer application that generates similarity/identity matrices for DNA or protein sequences without needing pre-alignment of the data. Conclusions: The …

Reproductive Characteristics, Multiple Paternity And Mating System In A Central Florida Population Of The Gopher Tortoise, Gopherus Polyphemus, Jamie Colleen Colson-Moon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

I studied the reproductive characteristics and mating systems of a central Florida population of gopher tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus). Using x-radiography, females were monitored for stage in egg-shelling and clutch size. Eggs began to appear on x-ray photographs in the first week of May in both 2001 and 2002; however, fully shelled eggs were not found before the end of May. In total 55% of the females x-rayed were gravid. Clutch sizes ranged from 4-12 with a mean of 7.29, with a mean clutch mass of 40.9 g. Clutch size increased with an increase in mean carapace length and …

Nuclear Receptor Coactivator Function In Reproductive Physiology And Behavior, Heather A. Molenda, Caitlin P. Kilts, Rachel L. Allen, Marc J. Tetel Jul 2003

Nuclear Receptor Coactivator Function In Reproductive Physiology And Behavior, Heather A. Molenda, Caitlin P. Kilts, Rachel L. Allen, Marc J. Tetel

Faculty Research and Scholarship

Gonadal steroid hormones act throughout the body to elicit changes in gene expression that result in profound effects on reproductive physiology and behavior. Steroid hormones exert many of these effects by binding to their respective intracellular receptors, which are members of a nuclear receptor superfamily of transcriptional activators. A variety of in vitro studies indicate that nuclear receptor coactivators are required for efficient transcriptional activity of steroid receptors. Many of these coactivators are found in a variety of steroid hormone-responsive reproductive tissues, including the reproductive tract, mammary gland, and brain. While many nuclear receptor coactivators have been investigated in vitro, …

A Visual Framework Invites Human Into The Clustering Process, Keke Chen, Ling Liu Jul 2003

A Visual Framework Invites Human Into The Clustering Process, Keke Chen, Ling Liu

Kno.e.sis Publications

Clustering is a technique commonly used in scientific research. The task of clustering inevitably involves human participation - the clustering is not finished when the computer/algorithm finishes but the user has evaluated, understood and accepted the patterns. This defines a human involved "clustering-analysis/evaluation" iteration. Instead of neglecting this human involvement, we provide a visual framework (VISTA) with all power of algorithmic approaches (since their result can be visualized), and in addition we allow the user to steer/monitor/refine the clustering process with domain knowledge. The visual-rendering result also provides a precise pattern for fast post-processing.
