Faculty Adoption Of Computer Technology For Instruction In The North Carolina Community College System., Karen Hill Less

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Computer technology has become an integral part of instruction at the elementary, secondary, and postsecondary levels. Some instructors have enthusiastically adopted technological innovations in their classrooms, often expending their own funds for hardware and software, while others have resisted the trend, citing a myriad of reasons for not including computer technology. Significant research on the adoption of innovations has been undertaken by Everett M. Rogers, who identified individuals on a continuum from Innovator to Laggard. Rogers’ research was used as a basis to classify full-time faculty teaching in degree programs in the North Carolina Community College System and to compare …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this master’s thesis, I shall examine Graham Greene’s place in criticism of the British novel by focusing on The Third Man and The Quiet American. In terms of theoretical approach, I shall focus on a close, critical reading of the texts employing elements of cultural, historical, psychological, and genre criticism. With the films, I shall focus on lighting and shot formation along with the abilities of the directors and actors. These works have not been studied jointly before as literature or as film or as a combination thereof. Nevertheless, such study proves worthwhile. My thesis is also the …

Molecular Pharmacology Of Somatostatin Receptors, Fredric C. Mazza Aug 2003

Molecular Pharmacology Of Somatostatin Receptors, Fredric C. Mazza

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Somatostatin (somatotropin release inhibitory factor, SRIF), inhibits animal cell secretion and proliferation. SRIF is transcribed from a single gene as a 1 t 6 amino acid that in precursor is cleaved a cell specific manner into two distinct peptides, SRIF-14 and SRIF-28. Each binds with high affinity to all five known SRIF-receptor subtypes (sst, - ssts) and several of these receptor subtypes are endogenously expressed in the AtT-20 cell, a murine pituitary corticotroph. SRIF receptors belong to the G protein-coupled family of integral membrane receptors. Within the SRIF receptor family, it has been shown that the sst, receptor subtype exists …

Dietary Patterns, Exercise Behaviors And Osteoporosis Knowledge Of College Women At West Virginia University, Jamie Sutton Deem Aug 2003

Dietary Patterns, Exercise Behaviors And Osteoporosis Knowledge Of College Women At West Virginia University, Jamie Sutton Deem

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study was conducted to describe the dietary patterns, exercise behaviors and osteoporosis knowledge of college women at West Virginia University. One hundred forty-one women were recruited (ages 18--27). Mean intake of nutrients including calcium (860 +/- 369 mg/day) was reported. Calcium intake was significantly lower than the recommendation (1000 mg/day; p < 0.0001). Mean reported exercise time was 54.4 minutes/day. This was significantly greater than the recommendation of 30 minutes/day (p < 0.01). Osteoporosis knowledge was measured by questionnaire. The majority of participants were able to identify 7/14 risk factors. A T-test indicated that individuals who answered osteoporosis risk factor questions correctly had higher intakes of calcium, but were still significantly below the recommendation (p < 0.001). Results indicated that exercise time was significantly higher in individuals who answered osteoporosis risk factor questions correctly (p < 0.001). These results suggest that college women do not have adequate intakes of calcium or knowledge of osteoporosis for prevention of the disease.

Raptor Assemblage, Abundance, Nesting Ecology, And Habitat Characteristics Under Intensive Forest Management In The Central Appalachian Mountains, Rebecca D. M. Smith

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Raptor abundance and diversity were examined in three treatments (20-, 40-, and 80-yr harvest rotations) on an industrial forest in the central Appalachian Mountains. I conducted diurnal broadcast surveys, compared nocturnal survey protocols, examined habitat characteristics at two spatial scales (564 m and 1000 m buffers), and described nesting ecology (including prey composition) of 3 species of diurnal raptors. I detected 17 species and found no significant differences in abundance among treatment for all raptors. Forest-dwelling species were detected more often than edge-dwelling species and Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) was the most abundant species. Using a Barred Owl vocalization survey …

Genetic, Metabolic, And Histopathological Studies Of Particle -Associated Respiratory Alterations, Mohamed Mohamedy Ghanem

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cytochrome P450s (CYPs) form a superfamily of enzymes crucial for the oxidative metabolism of a wide variety of endogenous and exogenous (xenobiotic) compounds. Cytochrome P4501A1 (CYP1A1) is a member of the CYP1A subfamily that is involved in pulmonary carcinogenesis. CYP1A1 metabolizes polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), such as benzo[a]pyrene in cigarette smoke into DNA-binding reactive metabolites resulting in gene mutation and carcinogenesis. Silicosis and coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) are two pulmonary diseases associated with occupational exposure to silica and coal dust (CD), respectively. Most coal miners are smokers or ex-smokers and epidemiologic studies of coal dust carcinogenesis are confounded by the …

Epileptiform Bursting In The Disinhibited Neonatal Cerebral Cortex, Jason Eric Wells Aug 2003

Epileptiform Bursting In The Disinhibited Neonatal Cerebral Cortex, Jason Eric Wells

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The cerebral cortex, which include the neocortex and hippocampus, is an elaborate neuronal network communicating mainly through glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Glutamate, operating via AMPA, kainate, and NMDA receptors excites neurons, and operating via metabotropic glutamate receptors can either increase or decrease the excitation in the neuronal network. GABA, operating through GABAA and GABAB receptors, inhibits the mature neuronal network, and GABAA receptor blockade in the adult cerebral cortex leads to epileptiform bursts. In contrast, in the neonatal cerebral cortex, GABAA has been proposed to function as an excitatory neurotransmitter, and glutamatergic synapses are claimed to be underdeveloped. It …

Rx Plays Multiple Roles In Eye Development, Vera A. Voronina Aug 2003

Rx Plays Multiple Roles In Eye Development, Vera A. Voronina

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The homeobox was first identified as a common feature of Drosophila genes that control pattern formation during embryogenesis. These genes have been implicated in the regional specialization of the developing brain, spinal cord and other body structures. Homeobox gene families are highly conserved and encode DNA-binding regulatory proteins. Certain members of the homeobox gene family, including Pax6, Chx10, Lhx2, Otx2, Six3 and Six6, are crucial for development of the eye. A new family of retinal homeobox genes, Rx, is expressed early in embryogenesis in retinal stem cells. This expression pattern, along with results of overexpression and gene deletion studies, is …

Kula And The Trobriand Islands: The Meaning And Power Of Objects, Becky Tomlinson Aug 2003

Kula And The Trobriand Islands: The Meaning And Power Of Objects, Becky Tomlinson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Just as a word in a foreign language must be interpreted for one who does not speak the language, a cultural artifact alone holds no significance or meaning for an outsider. Thus, for an object to be understood it cannot stand alone, but must be placed in context though time and space, and various layers of cultural meaning must be expounded. The word lagim, from the Kiriwina language, may be roughly translated as meaning "the splashboard of a Kula canoe". This translation may give the proper words from English that denote the object, but it still leaves much to …

San Diego Law Review

This Comment discusses the problem of raw and partially treated sewage flowing from the Tijuana River into the San Diego region. The author begins by explaining how the problem was created by a population growth in Tijuana and a lack of an adequate sewage system. The author then goes on to discuss historical developments and lessons learned from past attempts to alleviate this problem. Next, the author examines the Bajagua project, an effort to solve the problem by constructing a large secondary treatment in Mexico. The author argues that this is the most comprehensive solution because of the added benefit …

Distance Education Of Pennsylvania Pond Owners, Katherine L. Schmidt, Bryan R. Swistock, William E. Sharpe Aug 2003

Distance Education Of Pennsylvania Pond Owners, Katherine L. Schmidt, Bryan R. Swistock, William E. Sharpe

Journal of Extension

Pennsylvania pond owners represent a large audience with a great need for educational programming and assistance. Penn State Extension attempted to reach this audience via a pond management program delivered by satellite. Evaluations by both program attendees and Extension professionals demonstrated that the program was successful. However, attendee respondents indicated that they wanted more in-depth information over a shorter time frame. A relatively small proportion (10%) of attendees did not favor satellite delivery. This level of dissatisfaction is quite low and may be improved by focusing on shorter, more focused satellite programs and by providing videotapes of satellite programs.

Motivating Change In Horse Owners: The Horse Farm Of Environmental Distinction Awards Program, Jenifer Nadeau, Joyce Meader Aug 2003

Motivating Change In Horse Owners: The Horse Farm Of Environmental Distinction Awards Program, Jenifer Nadeau, Joyce Meader

Journal of Extension

The Horse Farm of Environmental Distinction Awards Program may serve as a model for other states and is an effective and innovative way to improve environmental stewardship abilities of horse owners. Changes in environmental management result when horse owners are educated about best management practices and offered rewards for their efforts. Winners may be more motivated to continually improve their practices. Sending additional educational material, providing on-farm visits, and offering educational workshops may also strengthen the program and help horse owners become better stewards of their natural resources.

Fall Calving In The Intermountain West, Dale R. Zobell, Craig Burrell, Darrell Rothlisberger, Eleanor Jenson Aug 2003

Fall Calving In The Intermountain West, Dale R. Zobell, Craig Burrell, Darrell Rothlisberger, Eleanor Jenson

All Current Publications

Fall calving has been practiced by beef producers for many years, although in small numbers relative to spring calving. The spring calf crop has been a traditional event for most beef producers and probably will continue to be. There are distinct advantages, however, to fall calving which producers could take advantage of. The potential for higher conception and weaning rates, price premiums and the elimination of calf scours are among the reasons some beef producers have switched from spring calving their herd to fall calving.

Word Pairs And Distinctive Combinations In The Book Of Mormon, James T. Duke Jul 2003

Word Pairs And Distinctive Combinations In The Book Of Mormon, James T. Duke

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The literary richness of the Book of Mormon is attested by the appearance of word pairs, in both parallel and conjoined pairs. On occasion, combinations of three, four, or even more words appear together more than once. Possible reasons for the scriptural use of word pairs include literary functions, echoes of the law of Moses, theological terms, universals (or merisms), repetition, and mnemonic function. Duke builds on previous studies of word pairs in the Book of Mormon by Kevin Barney and John Tvedtnes. The frequency of word pairs and other combinations of words witnesses to the Hebrew roots of the …

A Conversation With Robert J. Matthews, Journal Of Book Of Mormon Studies Jul 2003

A Conversation With Robert J. Matthews, Journal Of Book Of Mormon Studies

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Robert J. Matthews was influenced by the Book of Mormon to pursue his studies of the Joseph Smith Translation. He was intrigued by what the Book of Mormon said about the Bible. To further one’s understanding of the Book of Mormon, Matthews recommends further study on the Near East and an analysis of the internal structure of the book. Royal Skousen’s work on the comparative text, Hugh Nibley’s Book of Mormon writings, and articles in the Encyclopedia of Mormonism on the Book of Mormon are sources for increasing one’s knowledge of that book.
