Research Collection School Of Economics

Hürthle cell tumors are rare thyroid neoplasms for which disease biology is poorly understood and diagnosis of carcinoma can be challenging. The aim of the study was to characterize molecular expression profiles of Hürthle cell tumors and to determine the clinical significance of identified phenotypes. Paraffin-embedded tissue cores of normal thyroid (n = 18), and histopathologically well-defined Hürthle cell adenomas (n = 27), Hürthle cell tumors of unknown malignant behavior (n = 7), and minimally (n = 14) and widely (n = 21) invasive Hürthle cell carcinomas were arrayed in triplicate on tissue microarrays. Expression profiles of p53, mdm-2, p21, …

Kids At Risk: Plight Of Child Workers In The Tourism Industry In Cebu, Divina M. Edralin

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Child labor seems to be a fact of life in many parts of the world. As such, millions of girls and boys around the world are being exploited every day. They are an estimated 250 million in total, 50% of them working full-time and not attending school, while 50 million children at least are involved in the worst forms of child labor (ILO-IPEC, 2001). These children are those under 18 years of age.

Popper Vs The Armchair Economists, Gerardo L. Largoza

DLSU Business & Economics Review

ARE ECONOMISTS GUILTY of not practising what they preach? Do they pay no more than lip service to the importance of constructing falsifiable theories? Does much of what passes as science among the economic illuminati actually fail to meet the standards of proper (Popperian) methodology? These are the questions posed by Mark Blaug in his 1980 text, "The Methodology of Economics (Or How Economists Explain)".

Analyzing The Change In Philippine Poverty From 1997 To 2000, Sandy C. Vicente

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The study looks at poverty assessment from two different levels: (1) poverty measurement in a single point in time (exploring the responsiveness of poverty to growth and redistribution) and (2) decomposition of poverty changes to examine the actual response of poverty to changes in growth and redistribution. This investigation, which looks into the growth and distribution impacts of poverty differences, provides a peek into the interaction of changes, possible options and targets for poverty alleviation programs.

Measurement Of Efficiency Of Philipine Life Insurers, Mary Anne Majadillas

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This paper measures the X-efficiency of Philippine life insurers for the period 1996-2000. It uses the distribution-free method to estimate efficiency. It also seeks to find conventional accounting measure of performance is most correlated with efficiency. The results show that Philippine life insurers, on average, have 36% higher costs compared to the most efficient firm in the industry. It also finds that among four conventional accounting ratios used in the study, efficiency is most correlated with ROA and ROE. Decision makers in life insurance companies concerned with X-efficiency should therefore pay close attention to these two ratios.

A Study On The Long-Term Predictability Of Monthly Returns Of Ayala Corporation And Pldt Stocks From 1996 To 2000, Rene B. Hapitan

DLSU Business & Economics Review

A two-stage computer-aided Markov chain analysis was used to determine longterm predictability of Ayala Corporation and PLDT stocks from over a five-year period. The results reveal no evidence of random walk for PLDT stocks. Dividends, which are often used as informational content to determine the direction of stock prices, cannot be used as a determinant in the case of PLDT stock prices. Further study is recommended on whether this behavior is prevalent in the Philippine Stock Market and what other stocks exhibit this behavior.

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

This paper compares three models of econometric analysis on economy, in this case the Indonesian economy. The regression models are the two stage least squares (2SLS) which has a strong support from the economic theory of aggregate expenditure, the Vector Error Correction (VEC) and Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) which both comes from the time series analysis, that do not have to be economic time series. The study tries to find out which are most 'suitable in analyzing the time series of Indonesian economy.

After all the estimation and comparison process, we finally agree that the use of those different …

Alternative Solutions To The Child Protective Services Staffing Crisis: Innovations From Industrial/ Organizational Psychology, Michelle Graef, Megan E. Potter Jan 2002

Alternative Solutions To The Child Protective Services Staffing Crisis: Innovations From Industrial/ Organizational Psychology, Michelle Graef, Megan E. Potter

Center on Children, Families, and the Law (and Related Organizations): Publications

Several years ago we conducted an informal telephone survey of 53 child protective services (CPS) agencies, both state and county administered, to obtain a broad snapshot of what methods agencies across the country were using to select new CPS staff. Our goal was to learn what measures or indicators were included in these hiring decisions, with the hope of collaborating across agency lines to develop new approaches. Our results surprised us: Many jurisdictions invested minimally in the recruitment and selection of new CPS staff, yet they clearly expected new CPS workers to achieve high performance after some (varying) amounts of …

Photographs Of Church Meetings Among The U.S. Military In World War Ii, Robert C. Freeman, Dennis A. Wright, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel

BYU Studies

In the dark days of World War II, U.S. service personnel found themselves suddenly far from home, uprooted not only from the physical safety of their native soil but also from the nourishment of loved ones and religious fellowship. In the spiritual desert of war, Latter-day Saints in the military did what they could to tap into the wellspring of their faith, as these photographs of Mormon meetings attest.

Skousen also examined over twenty copies of the first edition of the Book of Mormon belonging to the Community of Christ. Romig explains his responsibilities and the process of assisting Skousen in the project and also mentions how Skousen’s work has improved the relationship between the …

The Systematic Text Of The Book Of Mormon, Royal Skousen Jan 2002

The Systematic Text Of The Book Of Mormon, Royal Skousen

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Royal Skousen explains in detail the internal consistency of the original text of the Book of Mormon. He references several verses of the Book of Mormon to discuss five main points: consistency in meaning; systematic phraseology; variation in the text; conjectural emendation; and revising the text. By examining these five aspects, Skousen shows that neither the message nor the doctrine of the Book of Mormon loses credibility as a result of textual changes. Skousen also mentions that the consistency in the manuscripts suggests that Joseph Smith did not receive the text as a concept but rather received it word for …

Fragments Of The Original Manuscript, Robert J. Espinosa Jan 2002

Fragments Of The Original Manuscript, Robert J. Espinosa

Espinosa shares his experience working with Skousen and the developments that they were able to make. After meeting with the owners of some fragments of the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon, Espinosa and Skousen were able to conserve, examine, and photograph the fragments. They also carefully analyzed the physical characteristics of the printer’s manuscript.

“Strange Ramblings”: The Ideal And Practice Of Sermons In Early Mormonism, Davis Bitton Jan 2002

“Strange Ramblings”: The Ideal And Practice Of Sermons In Early Mormonism, Davis Bitton

BYU Studies

People who attended meetings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during its first seventy years heard many sermons preached (fig. 1). But the sermons often seemed different from those heard in Protestant and Catholic congregations. For the Saints, this was further evidence that Mormonism was not tied to a professional clergy but, like primitive Christianity, allowed wide participation by parishioners. Outsiders, however, were often less than favorably impressed with Mormon sermons. According to one observer, most Mormon speakers he heard were guilty of "strange ramblings." Before examining in detail the peculiarities of preaching among the Latter-day Saints, …
