The Oxford Guide To Style, Priscilla Finley
Library Faculty Research
Oxford's style manual will be essential to users previously dependent on Hart's Rules for Compositors and Readers (39th ed., 1986)--those preparing manuscripts for Oxford University Press and other British publishers--which Ritter revises and enlarges. Chapters cover general publication topics such as front matter and preparation of copy and proofs; editorial issues like punctuation, numbers, and capitalization; special conventions regarding science and mathematics; and "specialist subjects" including British and EU law, music, poetry, drama, and sacred works.

Design And Analysis Of A Process For Melt Casting Metallic Fuel Pins Incorporating Volatile Actinides, Yitung Chen, Darrell Pepper, Randy Clarksean
Fuels Campaign (TRP)
The Transmutation Research Program requires the incorporation of non-fertile actinides into the fuel matrix for the transmuter blanket. One of three currently proposed candidate matrices for the transmuter blanket is a metallic alloy fuel matrix. Metallic fuels are an outstanding candidate for a transmutation fuel due to excellent irradiation performance and ease of fabrication. However, including a volatile constituent during fabrication of these fuel pins presents a challenge. High vapor pressure actinides, particularly americium, are susceptible to rapid vaporization and transport using traditional metal fuel casting processes. As a result, only a fraction of the desired charge is incorporated into …

Design And Evaluation Of Processes For Fuel Fabrication, Georg F. Mauer
Fuels Campaign (TRP)
One of the primary concerns in selecting a fuel matrix for actinide-bearing fuels, such as those for transmutation systems, is fuel fabrication. Fuel fabrication technologies for the fabrication and re-fabrication processes must meet several technical considerations, such as minimizing secondary radioactive waste streams, economic viability, reasonable capital outlay, and must be easy to maintain over the transmuter core life cycle. Additionally, the fuel type chosen must be easily manufactured in a remote environment. The volatile behavior of americium during thermal processing further complicates these goals. Currently, the national program is investigating a number of candidate fuel matrices: metallic, ceramic, dispersion, …

The Refugee Jurist And American Law Schools, 1933-1941, Kyle Graham
Faculty Publications
This paper documents an important episode in the development of the “modern” American law school. Starting in 1933, law schools were invited to “host” or permanently welcome onto their faculties European jurists displaced by the German National Socialist government. At first, law schools sensed an opportunity to affiliate themselves with some of the leading lights of German “scientism.” Over time, however, these same institutions concluded that younger émigré scholars were more capable than their older counterparts were of embracing “American” practices of law teaching and scholarship. This article, drawing upon various archival sources, traces this transition, its causes, and its …

A Moment In The The Times: Law Professors And The Court-Packing Plan, Kyle Graham
Faculty Publications
When Franklin Roosevelt unveiled his "court-packing" plan, law professors found themselves in an unfamiliar position. For perhaps the first time ever, their professional opinions were being sought by journalists and politicians, for consumption by the general public. In faculty meetings and private correspondence, law professors considered the propriety of taking a stand for or against the President's plan. Ultimately, some professors chose to go public with their support (or opposition); others considered such commentary as a form of advocacy that was incompatible with their job descriptions. This article relates and examines the debate among law professors over both the court-packing …

Theological Reflections On Leadership In Christian Community, Gerard O'Neill
Theological Reflections On Leadership In Christian Community, Gerard O'Neill
Theses
This paper examines the dynamics involved in Christian community, paying particular attention to the pivotal role leadership plays in nurturing and sustaining the life of the community. It begins by analysing the human need for community if people are to fulfill their potential both individually and communally. Time is devoted to understanding Christian community from a Scriptural perspective and a caution is sounded not to envisage Christian community in purely mechanistic terms. The doctrine of the trinity of God is used as a lens to view vital characteristics in the life of a Christian community. The theology of leadership is …

Correlates Of Deviant Behaviour : An Etiological Study, Siok Gim Chan
Student Works (2000-2009)
This study aims to ascertain whether social and personal resources are related to deviant behaviour of adolescents. The social resources investigated are those available to them in their home, peer-group and school, and are measured in terms of parental support, peer-group support and school experiences. The personal resources studied are concepts of self, coping behaviour and moral development. Comparing delinquent subjects to controls will ascertain the resources that helped adolescents abstain from deviant behaviour. Survey method is used for data collection. The questionnaire is administrated to 63 male delinquent subjects in an approved school. The questionnaire is posted to 16 …

Predicting Work Stress Burnout In Rural And Urban Emergency Medical Technicians Through The Use Of Early Recollections, Susan M. Vettor
Predicting Work Stress Burnout In Rural And Urban Emergency Medical Technicians Through The Use Of Early Recollections, Susan M. Vettor
Dissertations
Problem . Literature on work-stress burnout among emergency medical technicians (EMTs) suggests that they have maintained the same levels of burnout and attrition rates for the past 20 years. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between early recollections and burnout in EMTs working in urban and rural locations.
Method . A demographic questionnaire, the Staff Burnout Scale for Health Professionals (SBS-HP), and two early recollections, were used to survey 120 emergency medical technicians in Toronto, Ontario and Mojave County, Arizona to assess their level of burnout and to identify various themes in early recollections.

Learning And Study Strategies As They Relate To Success In An Open-Entry/Open-Exit College Developmental Reading Course, Ginna A. Wenger
Dissertations
This study examines whether student interviews, students' responses on the Learning and Study Styles Inventory (LASSI), or both, could be useful for sorting students who are likely to succeed from those students who are less likely to succeed in an open-entry/open-exit college reading skills course at a small, rural Michigan community college.
The study combined qualitative data in the form of student interviews and quantitative data that consisted of LASSI scores from 41 students. The qualitative part of the study employed a constant comparative method to analyze data from five semi-structured interviews. The quantitative part of the study computed Pearson r …

A Syntactic Study Of Errors In Tense Of Malays Learning Arabic : With Special Reference To Iium, Matriculation Centre Students, Abdelnasir Osman Abdalla Subair
Student Works (2000-2009)
This is a syntactic study of errors of tense forms of Malays learning Arabic at the International Islamic University Malaysia Matriculation Center. The main aim of this study is to investigate grammatical errors in the area of the verb inflection for tense in both nominal sentences and verbal sentences of 180 scripts written by a group of pre-university level students. The thesis studies types or errors and their underlying causes. The study also suggests a remedial plan which includes leaching grammar. correcting students' errors, and designing a language syllabus. The statistical analysis shows that the learners' errors amounted to 1062. …
Pr For Academic Libraries: Focus On The Faculty, Robert H. Hu
Pr For Academic Libraries: Focus On The Faculty, Robert H. Hu
Faculty Articles
The faculty is the driving force of most law school libraries. Instituting a public relations campaign that caters to faculty needs will illustrate the fundamental importance of the library. A successful faculty-centric public relations strategy not only solidifies the library’s position within the law school, but also generates buzz and recognition among the university-wide community. In order to better assist academic libraries in establishing a successful public relations campaign, it is helpful to consider in depth some particular ideas for accommodating and incorporating the faculty. However, ultimately, the best public relations initiative will be tailored to the uniqueness of the …
The Irony Of Lawyers' Justice In America, Thomas L. Shaffer
The Irony Of Lawyers' Justice In America, Thomas L. Shaffer
Journal Articles
Our pastor recently finished a pretty good sermon, on the Parable of the Good Samaritan, with a story of his own about a dangerous curve on the highway into town.
The Parable of the Dangerous Curve brought to my mind Deborah Rhode's thorough, thoughtful assessment of American lawyers in the twenty-first century, and Dean Kronman's eulogy for the lost lawyer. The good Samaritans who sought to straighten the dangerous road spoke of roadwork as Deborah Rhode speaks of what legislatures, judges, and bar associations should do about lawyers. Maybe they thought modern speed and paving had made it dangerous—yearning, as …

Delaware Is Not A State: Are We Witnessing Jurisdictional Competition In Bankruptcy, G. Marcus Cole
Journal Articles
Over the last twelve years, the United States District Court for the District of Delaware has experienced exponential growth in the number of bankruptcy filings for large corporate debtors. This relatively recent rise in Delaware bankruptcy venue cannot, on its face, be explained by Delaware's eighty-five-year preeminence in the race for corporate charters, since the advantages most often postulated for Delaware's dominance in corporate law do not carry over to corporate bankruptcy. The state has limited influence over federal bankruptcy law and virtually no control over the selection of federal bankruptcy judges.
This rise of Delaware bankruptcy venue, or Delawarization …
Contracting With Limited Commitment: Evidence From Employment-Based Health Insurance Contracts, Keith J. Crocker, John R. Moran
Contracting With Limited Commitment: Evidence From Employment-Based Health Insurance Contracts, Keith J. Crocker, John R. Moran
Center for Policy Research
When an individual's health status is observable, but evolving over time, the key to maintaining a successful health insurance arrangement is to have the healthier members of the group cross-subsidize those who experience adverse health outcomes. We argue that impediments to worker mobility may serve to mitigate the attrition of healthy individuals from employer-sponsored insurance pools, thereby creating a de facto commitment mechanism that allows for more complete insurance of health risks than would be possible in the absence of such frictions. Using data on health insurance contracts obtained from the 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey, we find that the …
