The Development And Optimization Of A Hydrogen-Fueled Internal Combustion Engine, Troy M Braithwaite Jan 2002

The Development And Optimization Of A Hydrogen-Fueled Internal Combustion Engine, Troy M Braithwaite

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Conventional internal combustion engines modified to burn hydrogen fuel offer a good transition mode to a hydrogen economy for transportation applications. Details are given about the development of one such approach. This effort starts with a conventional 454 cubic inch Chevrolet V-8 engine that is then modified in various ways to accommodate the use of hydrogen; including specially formed intake and exhaust passages, modified cam, and fuel injection. Because the application is for constant speed application, tuned intake and exhaust is used.

In The Hearts Of Palms, Jennifer Lynn Bania Jan 2002

In The Hearts Of Palms, Jennifer Lynn Bania

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In the Hearts of Palms is a novel, in which the alternating narratives of two characters' lives meet in the most consequential of circumstances. A young girl's coming of age journey collides with a man's grief and search for healing and reaches a tragic denouement within a week of the novel's opening. The setting of the novel is Boulder City, Nevada, where the vast desert landscape limns the isolated landscape of the characters' internal condition; A major subject of the novel is the characters' negotiations with their developing roles as man and woman in the face of traditional expectations. The …

Paradigms Of Reality In Poe's Mad Narrative, Tamy Lynn Burnett Jan 2002

Paradigms Of Reality In Poe's Mad Narrative, Tamy Lynn Burnett

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study focuses on an examination of madness in four short stories by American author Edgar Allan Poe: "Ligeia," "Eleonora," "The Black Cat," and "The Fall of the House of Usher." Using Walter Fischer's theoretical communication framework, the Narrative Paradigm, the four stories are examined for narrative fidelity and narrative probability in an effort to more fully understand Poe's treatment of madness in first person narrators; "Ligeia" and "Eleonora" are compared as stories of a lost lover and the subsequent possibilities for madness due to guilt over marrying someone else. Next, "The Black Cat" is examined with a focus on …

Poem, Swim, Forrest Grail Cole Jan 2002

Poem, Swim, Forrest Grail Cole

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Poem, Swim is a collection of my poems written during the past year while I was living in Spain. They encompass my experiences in a foreign culture as well as bringing together all that I have learned about in poetry in the classroom. Influenced by certain poets like Charles Olsen and Robert Creeley, this manuscript is my attempt at writing a publishable book of poetry. A cohesive flow is maintained throughout the manuscript with reoccurring images such as sunshine, water, women and the longing for all of these things, and my attempts at breaking open the construction of the poem, …

Ronald Reagan's 1983 "Evil Empire" Speech: A Rhetorical Analysis, Kirsten Ann Westenskow Clark Jan 2002

Ronald Reagan's 1983 "Evil Empire" Speech: A Rhetorical Analysis, Kirsten Ann Westenskow Clark

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan addressed the National Association of Evangelicals, delivering what is now referred to as his "Evil Empire" speech. Hoping to reestablish his commitment to conservative values and encourage the audience to oppose a nuclear freeze, Reagan condemned the Soviet Union as the "focus of evil" in the modern world and urged the audience to resist the aggressive impulses of an evil empire. Although it initially received widespread criticism, Reagan's speech has since been credited as a salient factor in the collapse of the Soviet Union and has been heralded as one of the most important addresses …

George Herbert's Restlessness: Spiritual Fulfillment Or Spiritual Estrangement?, Amijo Comeford Jan 2002

George Herbert's Restlessness: Spiritual Fulfillment Or Spiritual Estrangement?, Amijo Comeford

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Restlessness occupied a significant spot in the literature of many prominent writers during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries including George Herbert, Christopher Marlowe, and John Milton. Herbert's perspective alone differs from the others; George Herbert's perspective is framed in "The Pulley." His view that restlessness is a divine treasure is unique to him and is manifested in various avenues. First, restlessness as a virtue is manifested in his own writing. Writing poetry was a mental form of restlessness that allowed Herbert to praise God, putting him in a position to be received into God's rest. Second is the concept of …

Still, Lynn Margaret Drebes Jan 2002

Still, Lynn Margaret Drebes

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A collection of poems, Still, asks and attempts to answer the questions: how does memory function; how do we grieve; and what is time? The poems contend that the one consistent quality of memory is that it is never static; instead, "it comes in waves like nausea," and that this ebb and flow of memory influences necessarily the process of grieving, a recursive, rather than linear process. Time is a human construct having little bearing on the most significant, either enlightening or devastating, of human experiences. The intention of Still is not to definitively answer these questions; rather, it acknowledges …

Biological Treatment Of Waste Solutions Generated From The Remediation Of Perchlorate-Contaminated Waters, Tina Mary Gingras Jan 2002

Biological Treatment Of Waste Solutions Generated From The Remediation Of Perchlorate-Contaminated Waters, Tina Mary Gingras

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates the feasibility of combining ion exchange and biological reduction to remove perchlorate contamination from waters and eliminate it from the environment. Perchlorate can be removed from water by ion exchange. However, regeneration of these resins creates a waste stream, concentrating the perchlorate and other components in the regenerant solution. This waste stream can then be channeled to a biological reactor where perchlorate is reduced by microorganisms. Perchlorate-reducing microorganisms are ubiquitous in nature, yet biological treatment of these waste streams would expose these microorganisms to high salt or ammonium concentrations and high perchlorate levels. In studying the impact …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The remains of the Devil Peak Shasta Ground Sloth ( Nothrotheriops shastensis) is one of the most complete fossils of this species ever discovered. The study's objective is to use the dimensions of the Devil Peak sloth and Aden Crater sloth (the only other complete skeleton of this species known) to characterize the morphology of Nothrotheriops shastensis. Radiocarbon ages obtained from eggshells located with the Devil Peak sloth indicate it is approximately 32,000 years old; I measured various dimensions of both humeri, one radius, both ulnae, the pelvis, both patellae, and one tibia Most bones of the Devil Peak skeleton …

Cytokine And Neurotransmitter Regulation Of Glial Cell Production Of Il-6; Indications For Neurodegenerative Disorders, Donald Scott Horrell Jan 2002

Cytokine And Neurotransmitter Regulation Of Glial Cell Production Of Il-6; Indications For Neurodegenerative Disorders, Donald Scott Horrell

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The cytokines interleukin-1 (IL-1) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) are produced during an immune reaction and cause inflammation and swelling of the surrounding tissue. AD is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by well-defined neuropathologic entities. Both IL-1 and IL-6 are present in senile plaques and may cause a self-propagating inflammatory process that contributes to the disease processes of AD; Somatostatin (SRIF) is a small, inhibitory neuropeptide present throughout the CNS. Because SRIF is an inhibitory neuropeptide we sought to determine the effects of SRIF on the production of IL-6 in rat C6 glial tumor cells. The release of IL-6 in the C6 cell …

Farfalla: A Poetry Thesis, Vanessa Leigh Huff Jan 2002

Farfalla: A Poetry Thesis, Vanessa Leigh Huff

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Farfalla is a book of poetry of the lineage of poets who believe that poetry is not in poems. It is itself alive, and ruptures from poems. All poetry is political, as it is inevitably a product of the time and place in which it was written. It is affected by politics and effects its change, as Shelley has written: "Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.";Thus striving toward "legislator" this work in progress is seeking to be in continuous motion out of the confinements of poems to a place where purposes are real and methods are issues of …

A Dynamic Simulation Model Of Beach Sand Replenishment: A Case Study Of Santa Barbara, California, David Turbow, Steve Norwick, Sajjad Ahmad Jan 2002

A Dynamic Simulation Model Of Beach Sand Replenishment: A Case Study Of Santa Barbara, California, David Turbow, Steve Norwick, Sajjad Ahmad

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

Sediment deprivation from dam installments contributes to beach erosion yet the underlying physical and economic factors linking them together have traditionally been isolated during regional planning. In order to gain a better understanding of the behavior of a managed beach system, a dynamic simulation model was developed incorporating physical and monetary factors influencing the amount of available beach sand. The Santa Barbara littoral cell was chosen as a case study to evaluate the feasibility of beach preservation goals under scenarios in which annual sand replenishment funding, sand prices, or sediment recovery from behind dams were limiting factors to available beach …

Using The Acrl Information Literacy Competency Standards For Higher Education To Assess A University Library Instruction Program, Jeanne R. Davidson, P. S. Mcmillen, Laurel S. Maughan Jan 2002

Using The Acrl Information Literacy Competency Standards For Higher Education To Assess A University Library Instruction Program, Jeanne R. Davidson, P. S. Mcmillen, Laurel S. Maughan

Library Faculty Research

The Reference and Instruction Department at Oregon State University (OSU) was charged with creating a vision and goals for its instruction program. This article describes how we used the recently published ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education as a framework for an initial self-study of our instructional practice and for promoting the concept of information literacy at our institution. The process of assessing our current practice led to discussions with library and campus faculty about the value of information literacy and to a clearer articulation of our instructional mission.

A Case Study Of Writing Skills Growth Of Three Eighth-Grade Students In A Writing Workshop Classroom, Thomas B Smith Jan 2002

A Case Study Of Writing Skills Growth Of Three Eighth-Grade Students In A Writing Workshop Classroom, Thomas B Smith

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Writing samples were collected over an eight month period from three 8th grade students. Using these samples along with student-teacher conference notes and the results of a literacy interview, the writing growth of each student was analyzed. Each student shows development of strong writing skills and an ability to discuss this growth in an articulate manner using written samples to back up their claims. The areas of growth identified by the teacher/researcher did not necessarily match those identified by the students. This mismatch is partially a result of the ways in which each student hid or abdicated her role as …

The Effects Of Jasmonates On The Proliferation Of Human Prostate Cancer Cell Lines In Culture, Daniel Emeka Ezekwudo Jan 2002

The Effects Of Jasmonates On The Proliferation Of Human Prostate Cancer Cell Lines In Culture, Daniel Emeka Ezekwudo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Jasmonic acid (JA), cis-Jasmone (CJ), and Methyl jasmonate (MJ), belong to a family of plant stress hormones known as the jasmonates. In plants, these compounds function as activators of cellular responses to diverse situations including cell death. Proliferation and cytotoxicity assays showed that the jasmonates inhibited the proliferation of the prostate cancer cell lines (PC-3 and DU-145), cultured in vitro. In addition, the type of inhibition exhibited by these agents was analyzed using flow cytometry (BrdU assay and Annexin V-FITC/PI staining) and fluorescence microscopy. The mechanism of inhibition was studied using 5-lipoxygenase enzyme. All agents (CJ, JA and MJ) inhibited …

Self-* Distributed Query Region Covering In Wireless Sensor Networks, Preethi Linga Jan 2002

Self-* Distributed Query Region Covering In Wireless Sensor Networks, Preethi Linga

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The connected sensor cover problem: Given a query over a sensor network, select a minimum or nearly minimum set of sensors, called connected sensor cover, such that the selected sensors cover the query region, and form a connected network among themselves. In its general form, this problem is known to be NP-hard; In this thesis research, we design the first, fully distributed, strictly localized, scalable, and self-* solution to the connected sensor cover problem. The Self-* concept has been used to include many fault-tolerant properties like self-configuring , self-reconfiguring/self-healing, etc. We will present a self-stabilizing solution and show that this …

Using Religious Discourse To Construct Reality: President George W Bush And Osama Bin Laden, Lisa Menegatos Jan 2002

Using Religious Discourse To Construct Reality: President George W Bush And Osama Bin Laden, Lisa Menegatos

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines and compares the religious discourse used by President George W. Bush in his September 20, 2001, address to a join session of Congress and by Osama bin Laden in his taped statement that aired on Al Jazeera television on October 7, 2001. As leaders of societies who both believe they are God's chosen people with a mission, both men relied on the religions of their respective nations to create a reality whereby one was good and the other evil. To illustrate how Bush and bin Laden achieve this, I apply the social construction of reality theory as …
