Evidence For Virgin Anasazi Presence In The Las Vegas Valley And Adjacent Areas, Susanne Janine Rowe Jan 2002

Evidence For Virgin Anasazi Presence In The Las Vegas Valley And Adjacent Areas, Susanne Janine Rowe

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Olivine-tempered ceramics are a characteristic artifact of Virgin Anasazi culture. The ceramics are found in the Las Vegas area, more than 70 km west of permanent Anasazi settlements in the Moapa Valley. Little is known regarding Anasazi utilization of this area, since most investigators have focused on the permanent settlements. I examined 25 ceramic assemblages from the Las Vegas vicinity, calculated the frequencies of olivine-tempered sherds in each, and noted the geographical distribution of the wares. The evidence does not support down-the-line exchange, but shows concentrations of olivine-tempered wares in the north Las Vegas Valley, Paradise Valley, and further west …

Spectroscopic Abundances Of Solar-Type Dwarfs In Open Cluster M34 (Ngc 1039), Simon Charles Schuler

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Parameters and relative abundances of Fe, Ni, Ti, Cr, Ca, Si, Al, and Mg have been derived for nine M34 G and K dwarfs from high-resolution, modest S/N, Keck/HIRES spectra. Effective temperatures have been derived spectroscopically and fall in the range 4750 ≤ Teff ≤ 6130 K. Despite modest scatter in Fe, Ti, Cr, Ca, Al, and Mg (none of which is found to be correlated with Li scatter in M34), our two coolest stars are slightly though consistently underabundant in these elements relative to the warmer stars. The two cool stars are slightly overabundant in Si, whose abundances are …

Alternate Path Routing Algorithm For Traffic Engineering In The Internet, Shyam Subramanian Jan 2002

Alternate Path Routing Algorithm For Traffic Engineering In The Internet, Shyam Subramanian

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Data flowing through the internet continues to grow every year. Increase in traffic demands increase in bandwidth. But bandwidth1 does not grow as fast as the traffic. This leads to congestion in the network and performance degradation. One way to avoid this problem is to use efficient routing algorithm that efficiently maps the flow of data onto the network; The most often used routing algorithm in the internet is the shortest path algorithm (Dijkstra's algorithm). This algorithm is simple and easy to implement. But this algorithm leads to over-utilization of part of the network, while the other part remains under-utilized. …

A Comparison Of Upper Confidence Limits For Skewed Distributions, Michael Gary Theemling Jan 2002

A Comparison Of Upper Confidence Limits For Skewed Distributions, Michael Gary Theemling

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Remediation decisions at contaminated sites are determined by comparing the Upper Confidence Limit (UCL) of the mean contaminant to a site-specific action level. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established methods for computing this UCL, also called the Exposure Point Concentration (EPC) term; The UCL formula depends upon the distribution of the contaminant concentrations, which are often positively skewed. The EPA frequently recommends the Lognormal distribution to model such data. However, that assumption often causes the UCL to be unreliable. What is the role of skewness in computing UCL statistics over different distributions? Computer simulation is used to test a …

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Alcohol Availability And Alcohol-Related Hospital Admissions In The City Of Chicago, 1990--1997, Dorothy Ruth Wilson Jan 2002

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Alcohol Availability And Alcohol-Related Hospital Admissions In The City Of Chicago, 1990--1997, Dorothy Ruth Wilson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Current research suggested a relationship between alcohol availability and problems, including suicide, and car accidents. However, the relationship between alcohol availability and alcohol related hospital admissions, such as acute intoxication and liver damage, has not been widely explored. Measuring alcohol availability by alcohol outlet density and using data for alcohol related hospital admissions in the city of Chicago, a Poisson regression analysis determined that neighborhoods with a higher percentage of African-Americans, higher poverty level, and a greater density of alcohol outlets had a greater number of alcohol related hospital admissions than other neighborhoods. To control for individual level characteristics, a …

Calculation Involving Hydrogen-Hydrogen(2) Collisional Cooling Processes For Use In Astrophysics, David Michael Archer Jan 2002

Calculation Involving Hydrogen-Hydrogen(2) Collisional Cooling Processes For Use In Astrophysics, David Michael Archer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis will calculate the H-H2 cooling processes used in astrophysics. Cooling is critical to the formation of the first objects formed in the early universe, and other diverse phenomenon of interest to astrophysics. For instance, in order to collapse into objects, the gravitational potential energy of primordial density fluctuations must be radiated away. The most abundant element in the universe is hydrogen, and cooling processes involving hydrogen are important in several contexts. To calculate the cooling, the cross section for collisional excitation at constant energy were integrated over a Maxwellian velocity distribution to determine a rate coefficient. Then the …

Partitioning A Given Circuit Targeting Multiple Fpgas, Girish Narayanan Cherussery Jan 2002

Partitioning A Given Circuit Targeting Multiple Fpgas, Girish Narayanan Cherussery

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Our approach to the problem of partitioning the design (represented as a hypergraph) into Multi-FPGAs uses a bi-level approach by initially clustering the design and then applying the bipartitioning technique iteratively. Each partition generated by the iterative bipartitioning technique should meet the constraints given by the FPGAs input-output and number of CLBs. The traditional FM partitioning can be applied to partition the circuit into multiple FPGAs. FM partitioning aims to minimize the number of interconnections but fails to group the nodes with maximum interconnections into one partition. Thus FM algorithm looks at the partitioning problem with a global viewpoint, abandoning …

The Architectural Impact Of Using Ground-Source Heat Pumps In Commercial Buildings In Las Vegas, George Aaron Bergman Jan 2002

The Architectural Impact Of Using Ground-Source Heat Pumps In Commercial Buildings In Las Vegas, George Aaron Bergman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A series of parametric studies evaluate the architectural impacts on the design and long term performance of ground-coupled heat pump systems over a fixed period of time. The results are applied to a commercial office building in order to assess the net impact of combining various energy efficiency strategies. The conclusion of the comprehensive study is that energy efficient design strongly contributes to a reduction in the required size of a ground-coupled heat pump system. A comparative life-cycle cost analysis validates these results by using the same commercial office building design to evaluate a ground-coupled heat pump system against two …
