The Effect Of Mechanical Vibration On Acute Power Output In The Bench Press, Brach John Poston Jan 2002

The Effect Of Mechanical Vibration On Acute Power Output In The Bench Press, Brach John Poston

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of mechanical vibration on acute power output in the bench press. A total of 10 male subjects performed 3 sets of 3 reps of bench presses using a load equal to 70% one repetition maximum (1RM) on two occasions separated by 3 days. One occasion served as the experimental (vibration) condition while the other occasion served as the control (non-vibration) condition. The conditions differed due to a 30 second vibration stimulation period between bench press sets 2 and 3 in the experimental condition. The control condition incorporated a 30 second …

The Day-To-Day Reliability Of Resting Metabolic Rate, Amy Elizabeth Thompson Jan 2002

The Day-To-Day Reliability Of Resting Metabolic Rate, Amy Elizabeth Thompson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This purpose of this study was to determine the day-to-day reliability of resting metabolic rate. 18 college students, (mean age 22 +/- 3.6 yrs, height 65.78 +/- 22.0 in., body mass 68.05 +/- 10.34 kg, percent body fat 23 +/- 6.5%) gave informed consent to participate in the study. RMR was measured on four separate days over a period of 14 days. Height, weight, and resting heart rate were also recorded on each testing day. Body composition was assessed on the first day. Energy intake, energy expenditure, and caffeine intake were controlled between days. Each test was done between 7 …

A Spectroscopic Analysis Of The Starburst Galaxies Ngc 3395 And Ngc 3396, Kenneth Plaks Jan 2002

A Spectroscopic Analysis Of The Starburst Galaxies Ngc 3395 And Ngc 3396, Kenneth Plaks

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

We have obtained ultraviolet and visible wavelength spectra of 31 bright star forming knots in the interacting galaxies NGC 3395 and NGC 3396 using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope. The knots are possible super star clusters on the order of ∼100 pc diameter with measured metallicities on the order of 0.5--0.6 Z⊙ . The spectra are consistent with a massive production of hot young stars in a starburst; Ages of the starburst knots were calculated using several diagnostics from the Leitherer et al. Starburst 99 code (SB99) using an Initial Mass Function (IMF) with …

A Comparative Study Of The Angoff And Nedelsky Methods: Implications For Validity, Michael J. Subkoviak, Michael T. Kane, Patrick H. Duncan Jan 2002

A Comparative Study Of The Angoff And Nedelsky Methods: Implications For Validity, Michael J. Subkoviak, Michael T. Kane, Patrick H. Duncan

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The Angoff and Nedelsky methods are two well-known procedures for setting passing scores on tests. Previous comparative studies indicate that the Nedelsky method tends to consistently set the lowest passing score relative to the Angoff and other methods. However, it cannot be concluded that the lower Nedelsky estimates are less accurate, because previous studies have not included a criterion of the "correct" passing score against which Nedelsky and other passing scores could be validated. The present paper describes an experiment in which criterion measures of the "correct" passing scores were generated and were compared for accuracy to Angoff and Nedelsky …

Examining The Cost-Outcome Relationship Of A Fortified Class-Size Reduction Program, Derick M. Kiger Jan 2002

Examining The Cost-Outcome Relationship Of A Fortified Class-Size Reduction Program, Derick M. Kiger

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Class-size reduction initiatives have been criticized for producing modest achievement gains for the resources they consume. Wisconsin’s Student Achievement Guarantee in Education (SAGE) was designed to amplify the achievement benefits of smaller classes by requiring complementary changes in the teaching and learning environment and accountability for results. This study examined SAGE in an urban school district. The achievement benefits realized by the evaluand were marginalized by high per-student costs and similar performance of comparison groups on a state-mandated reading test. Suggestions for improving the cost-outcome relationship were presented.

Collegiate Connection: A Program To Encourage The Success Of Student Participation In High School/University Dual Enrollment, Beverly Parke, Joe Nichols, Ann Souligny Brown Jan 2002

Collegiate Connection: A Program To Encourage The Success Of Student Participation In High School/University Dual Enrollment, Beverly Parke, Joe Nichols, Ann Souligny Brown

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This project is a comparative exploration of academic success rates for high school students enrolled in a high school/university dual enrollment program. Four-hundred-eighty-four high school student grades in university courses were compared to grades of the general university population and university freshmen (n = 4,552) in specific courses. In several specific courses, the earned grades of high school students participating in the program were found to be significantly greater than the grades of university freshmen in matching courses. The Collegiate Connection dual enrollment program is explained in detail and suggestions for additional future research are also included.

Ensuring The Health Of Long-Term Care: Policy Options, Shelley M. Macdermid, Beckie Adams, Kathy Byers, Betty Krejci

Center for Families Publications

Family Impact Seminars have been well received by federal policymakers in Washington, DC, and Indiana is one of several states to sponsor such seminars for state policymakers. Family Impact Seminars provide state-of-the-art research on current family issues for state legislators and their aides, Governor's Office staff, state agency representatives, educators, and service providers. One of the best ways to help individuals is by strengthening their families. Therefore, the Family Impact Seminars speakers analyze the consequences an issue, policy or program may have for families. The seminars provide objective, nonpartisan information on current issues and do not lobby for particular policies. …

Maccrate's Missed Opportunity: The Maccrate Report's Failure To Advance Professional Values Symposium, Russell G. Pearce

Faculty Scholarship

The 1992 Report of the Task Force on Law Schools and the Profession: Narrowing the Gap (the "Task Force"), Legal Education Professional Development - An Educational Continuum, popularly known as the MacCrate Report (the "Report"), was the most ambitious effort to reform legal education in the past generation. Some commentators have described the Report as "the greatest proposed paradigm shift in legal education since Langdell envisioned legal education as the pursuit of legal science through the case method in the late 19th century.” Although the Report sought to promote education in both lawyering skills and values, its major influence has …
