De/Reconstructing Appearances: Lope De Vega's Inversion Of Female Beauty In The Rimas Humanas Y Divinas Del Licenciado Tome De Burguillos, Mark J. Mascia

Languages Faculty Publications

This article illustrates how Lope de Vega, in his Rimas Humanas y Divinas Del Licenciado Tome de Burguillos, subverts idealized female beauty through the glorification of a more commonplace feminine object, while the time-honored poetic conventions which favored the former are deconstructed and replaced by a new anti-norm of female objectification.

The Impact Of Using Computer Supported Collaborative Learning Tools On Moral Reasoning In A Multi-Institutional Computer Ethics Module, Joe Griffin, Frances Grodzinsky, Pat Jefferies Jan 2002

The Impact Of Using Computer Supported Collaborative Learning Tools On Moral Reasoning In A Multi-Institutional Computer Ethics Module, Joe Griffin, Frances Grodzinsky, Pat Jefferies

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

Concerns about the increased use and abuse of information technology have evolved into more formalized evaluations of computer ethics in many organizations. This trend extends to most of the universities where they provide different modules related to professional computer ethics. Although these formalized evaluations have become more common, very little is known about the effects of collaborative learning on students’ moral reasoning and how to assess it. This study uses an experiment, involving students in three universities: University of Limerick in Ireland, De Montfort University in England and Sacred Heart University in the USA. The authors will describe the implementation …

Exclusions For War And Terrorism: Who Will Pay For Man-Made Catastrophes?, Greg Munro Jan 2002

Exclusions For War And Terrorism: Who Will Pay For Man-Made Catastrophes?, Greg Munro

Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings

This article examines the effect the coordinated attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11 had on insurers. The article notes that losses from an act of terrorism could rival those of acts of war and threaten the financial viability of the insurers that make American enterprise possible. The article points out that the insurers agree that they will survive this loss but will not take the chance on another of the same or greater magnitude. The article addresses ways that the risk of loss from terrorist acts may be spread across American society .

The Case Against Montana's Anti-Stacking Statute, Greg Munro Jan 2002

The Case Against Montana's Anti-Stacking Statute, Greg Munro

Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings

This article begins by noting that the 1997 anti-stacking statute is the number one problem faced by plaintiff's' counsel in Montana in attempting to secure adequate compensation for clients' injuries arising out of the operation of automobiles. The article charges that the brutal economics of the 1997 anti-stacking statute, which prohibits consumers from obtaining the benefit of multiple coverages for which they paid while allowing insurers a windfall by permitting them to collect multiple and ever increasing premiums for no coverage, has compelled attorneys to attack the statute.

The article presents a status report of a compendium of "stacking" cases …

Client Confidences And Public Confidence In The Legal Profession: Observations On The Aba House Of Delegates Deliberations On The Duty Of Confidentiality, Irma S. Russell Jan 2002

Client Confidences And Public Confidence In The Legal Profession: Observations On The Aba House Of Delegates Deliberations On The Duty Of Confidentiality, Irma S. Russell

Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings

This article sets forth points to encourage the ABA House of Delegates to reconsider proposed revisions to Model Rule 1.6 (b)(2) and (b)(3) and to reject any proposals to revert back to the former rule. Specifically, the article urges the delegates to: 1) be aware of absolutes and consider proportionality; 2) recognize lawyers as trustworthy decision makers; and 3) acknowledge the profession's responsibility to the public. The article suggests that the possibility of reverting to the former rule is radically out of step with the tradition of confidentiality in the American legal profession and with the rules of professional conduct …

"Return To Sender": Confronting Lynching And Our Haunted Landscapes, Mark J. Auslander Jan 2002

"Return To Sender": Confronting Lynching And Our Haunted Landscapes, Mark J. Auslander

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

This article considers a set of controversial images, primarily taken between 1880 and 1920, depicting lynchings and racial violence. Emory University has made these images publicly available, prompting some to worry that the collection will re-inflict trauma on those who suffered under racism in the United States. The articles asks, in part: if new initiatives in museums or other public spaces could help Americans to collectively confront their inner demons and move beyond the timeless repetition of trauma.

The article is available from Southern Changes: The Journal of the Southern Regional Council, 1978-2003.

Differentiation In The Elementary Classroom : A Proposal For The 21st Century, Lindy K. Grafton Jan 2002

Differentiation In The Elementary Classroom : A Proposal For The 21st Century, Lindy K. Grafton

Honors Capstones

I recently spent three weeks in Glen Ellyn doing my clinical work in a second grade classroom. As I spent my time there, I also participated in the school's institute day. The main topic of discussion during the institute day was differentiated lesson planning and it's place in the classroom. In differentiated lessons, students who are at different levels or abilities are all given the same lessons, but at their level. In this way, the students do not feel as if they are doing a different assignment that requires less work than others in the class. The students will all …

Mating Behaviors In Parasitic Wasps, Christine Landek Jan 2002

Mating Behaviors In Parasitic Wasps, Christine Landek

Honors Capstones

Mating behavior was examined in two species of parasitic wasps, Spalangia endius and Nasonia vitripennis. Contact, mounting, courting, and copulatory behavior were investigated for both species. Observations over reencounter behaviors were also examined. Male mate choice of virgin or mated females was looked at for N. vitripennis. N. vitripennis tended to initially contact both virgins and mated females. However, males copulated more with virgins. The behaviors that showed up most consistently in both species were wing fanning, leg tapping, and dorsal mounting. When the wasps would reencounter each other after copulation, S. endius would not court again, whereas N. vitripennis …

Media Mix, Linda M. Desalvo Jan 2002

Media Mix, Linda M. Desalvo

Honors Capstones

This thesis is an examination of how the United States’ media portrays tragic events and violence to society. Its purpose is to compare the portrayal of the media’s images and news stories and contrast it to how the media made the events of September 11, 2001 a source of entertainment. My research methods include excerpts from books, newspaper articles and images, television programs and news reports, advertisements, and Internet materials that I’ve gathered since the attacks on 9/11. These sources verify that the media is still using violence and tragic events as a source of entertainment. In addition to my …

Saint Boniface And The Conversion Of Germany During The Early Eight Century, Joel S. Thomas Jan 2002

Saint Boniface And The Conversion Of Germany During The Early Eight Century, Joel S. Thomas

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The overall theme of this project is Carolingian missionary activity during the first half of the eighth century, focusing specifically on the work of Saint Boniface of Crediton. My objectives were to establish that Saint Boniface borrowed conversion methodology from Pope Gregory I, define Teutonic and Celtic paganism, and illustrate how the rise of the Carolingian family aided Christian missionary efforts.

The students' race and majors were used in an attempt to determine if there were any noticeable differences in race/major categories. the study also examined some factors in students' backgrounds to determine if past experiences affected their decisions regarding majors.

Dante's Thomistic Vision: The Commedia, Frank Muller Jan 2002

Dante's Thomistic Vision: The Commedia, Frank Muller

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Dante's Commedia derives its form and content from the philosophy of St.Thomas Aquinas. It is a philosophical poemthat allegorically examines medieval moral theory, articulated in Aquinas' Summa Theologiae, in order to morally instruct the medieval layperson. This paper focuses mostly around the capital sin of pride due to its important place throughout the work and its efficacy in illustrating the link between Aquinas and Alighieri. The discussion of the sin involves providing Thomas' definition of pride and its opposite virtue, humility, in comparison with Dante's artistic representations. The overall goal is to present Dante's Commedia as an intricately philosophical work …

A Specht Module Analog For The Rook Monoid, Cheryl Grood Jan 2002

A Specht Module Analog For The Rook Monoid, Cheryl Grood

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

The wealth of beautiful combinatorics that arise in the representation theory of the symmetric group is well-known. In this paper, we analyze the representations of a related algebraic structure called the rook monoid from a combinatorial angle. In particular, we give a combinatorial construction of the irreducible representations of the rook monoid. Since the rook monoid contains the symmetric group, it is perhaps not surprising that the construction outlined in this paper is very similar to the classic combinatorial construction of the irreducible Sn-representations: namely, the Specht modules.
