Preventing Childhood Depression By Building Resiliency In Children, Sarah Carroll Jan 2002

Preventing Childhood Depression By Building Resiliency In Children, Sarah Carroll

Graduate Research Papers

This review of literature is a report of the success of programs designed to prevent childhood depression by building resiliency. Research results indicate that prevention programs focused on teaching children and parents coping skills, changing negative thought patterns, social problem solving, teaching the symptoms of childhood depression and how to discuss it with children, and fostering resiliency have reduced the incidence of depression in children (Comer, 1985; Gladstone & Beardslee, 2000; Seligman, 1995).

Additional research needs to address the following questions: a) How does building resilience differ for children from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds? b) . What are the …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Lynne E. Wallace Jan 2002

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Lynne E. Wallace

Graduate Research Papers

Historically, schools have been viewed as an integral part of the problem and solution for our nation's social, political, and economic problems. Americans generally believe that the public schools should address the ever-changing needs of our society. I agree with this belief, even though school systems sometimes are ill-equipped to handle this responsibility. Schools have the best opportunity to reach students to make the needed changes. Schools have the opportunity to pass on to students prevailing ideas and values to help them adjust to present society and be able to transform future society. The ideal school in the 21st Century …

Evaluation Of The Change On Water Vapor Transmission Rate Of Different Polypropylene Films In Contact With D-Limoneme And The Effect Such Changes Have On The Shelf Life Of Confectionary Products., Anna Romero

Theses

This paper discusses the changes observed in Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) of three plastic films while exposed to different concentrations of d-limoneme. The concentration of d-limoneme on the films was determined by means of Headspace Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry. The Water Vapor Transmission rate of all films was determined by means of a MOCON-Water Vapor Permeation Analysis System Permatran-W 3/31. It was observed that d-limoneme affected the films in two ways: at lower concentrations, the WVTR decreased but, after certain concentration was reached, the WVTR increased. These results explain the shortened shelf-life of candies containing d-limoneme which are …

Hypsometric Analysis Of Margaritifer Sinus And Origin Of Valley Networks, W. Luo Jan 2002

Hypsometric Analysis Of Margaritifer Sinus And Origin Of Valley Networks, W. Luo

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

The formation of Martian valley networks has been debated since their discovery. The relative roles of groundwater sapping and fluvial runoff processes have different implications on Martian paleoclimate. This paper uses a hypsometric analysis technique that has been tested on terrestrial landforms to analyze the hypsometric attributes of watershed basins in the Margaritifer Sinus region on Mars using Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) gridded topographic data. On the basis of quantitative characteristics of their hypsometric attributes, the majority of the basins (covering ∼3/5 of the study area) look more like terrestrial basins of sapping origin, and a significant number of …

A Heuristic For Clock Selection In High-Level Synthesis, J. Ramanujam, S. Deshpande, J. Hong, M. Kandemir Jan 2002

A Heuristic For Clock Selection In High-Level Synthesis, J. Ramanujam, S. Deshpande, J. Hong, M. Kandemir

Faculty Publications

Clock selection has a significant impact on the performance and quality of designs in high-level synthesis. In most synthesis systems, a convenient value of the clock is chosen or exact (and expensive) methods have been used for clock selection. This paper presents a novel heuristic approach for near-optimal clock selection for synthesis systems. This technique is based on critical paths in the dataflow graph. In addition, we introduce and exploit a new figure of merit called the activity factor to choose the best possible clock. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed technique is very fast and produces optimal solutions …

Address Code And Arithmetic Optimizations For Embedded Systems, J. Ramanujam, S. Krishnamurthy, J. Hong, M. Kandemir Jan 2002

Address Code And Arithmetic Optimizations For Embedded Systems, J. Ramanujam, S. Krishnamurthy, J. Hong, M. Kandemir

Faculty Publications

An important class of problems used widely in both the embedded systems and scientific domains perform memory intensive computations on large data sets. These data sets get to be typically stored in main memory, which means that the compiler needs to generate the address of a memory location in order to store these data elements and generate the same address again when they are subsequently retrieved. This memory address computation is quite expensive, and if it is not performed efficiently, the performance degrades significantly. In this paper, we have developed a new compiler approach for optimizing the memory performance of …

Strategies For Improving Data Locality In Embedded Applications, N. E. Crosbie, M. Kandemir, I. Kolcu, J. Ramanujam, A. Choudhary

Faculty Publications

This paper introduces a dynamic layout optimization strategy to minimize the number of cycles spent in memory accesses in a cache-based memory environment. In this approach, a given multi-dimensional array may have different memory layouts in different segments of the same application if doing so improves data locality (cache behavior) beyond the static approaches that fix memory layouts at specific forms at compile-time. An important characteristic of this strategy is that different memory layouts that a given array will assume at run-time are determined statically at compile-time; however the layout modifications (transformations), themselves, occur dynamically during the course of execution. …

Polymerase Chain Reaction: An Emerging Tool For Research In Pharmacology, Rishi Sharma, Manjeet Singh, Ajay Sharma

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a technique that can amplify a specific DNA segment in vitro using two site specific primers that hybridise to opposite DNA strands. The method produces large amounts of specific DNA from a complex DNA template in a single enzymatic reaction within a matter of hours. Reaction mixture contains a double helix DNA, two target specific primers, dNTPs, a DNA polymerase and a Mg2+ containing buffer. PCR is carried out in three distinct steps i.e. denaturation step, annealing step and extension step, which are repeated many times. The efficiency of PCR is measured in terms of …

Employees As Corporate Stakeholders, Poonam Puri, Tuvia Borok Jan 2002

Employees As Corporate Stakeholders, Poonam Puri, Tuvia Borok

Articles & Book Chapters

Enron offers a prime case study to explore the many failures of the modern corporation to treat its employees even-handedly, ethically and with respect. Employees make significant personal investments into the corporations they work for, but employee interests are rarely of concern to directors. This paper analyses several theories on the nature and purpose of the corporation and argues that the interests of stakeholders other than shareholders ought to be legally recognised in the corporation. The paper examines three theories on employees and employment, and argues that the human capital theory is most meaningful and best reflects the role of …

Children In Pornography After Sharpe, Janine Benedet Jan 2002

Children In Pornography After Sharpe, Janine Benedet

Articles & Book Chapters

In its recent decision in R. v. Sharpe, the majority of the Supreme Court of Canada upheld the Criminal Code provisions prohibiting the possession and making of child pornography, subject to two exceptions. Despite a narrow construction of the definition of child pornography and a broad reading of the statutory defences, the majority found that prohibiting individuals from making and possessing some kinds of child pornography was an unjustifiable limit on the freedom of expression guaranteed by s. 2(b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The dissent would have upheld the legislation in its entirety. This article argues …

Longitudinal Dispersion Coefficient In Single-Channel Streams, Z. Q. Deng, L. Bengtsson, V. P. Singh, D. D. Adrian

Faculty Publications

Using a new channel shape equation for straight channels and a more versatile channel shape or local flow depth equation for natural streams a method is developed for prediction of the longitudinal dispersion coefficient in single-channel natural streams, including straight and meandering ones. The method involves derivation of a new triple integral expression for the longitudinal dispersion coefficient and development of an analytical method for prediction of this coefficient in natural streams. The proposed method is verified using 70 sets of field data collected from 30 streams in the United States ranging from straight manmade canals to sinuous natural rivers. …

Psychology Faculty Publications

In this study, we investigated the Five-factor model in the concurrent prediction of positive symptomschizotypy as measured by the Magical Ideation (Eckblad & Chapman, 1983) and Perceptual Aberration (Chapman, Chapman, & Raulin, 1978) scales and negative symptom schizotypy as measured by the Physical Anhedonia (Chapman, Chapman, & Raulin, 1976) and Revised Social Anhedonia (Eckblad, Chapman, Chapman, & Mishlove, 1982; Mishlove & Chapman, 1985) scales. Previous studies suggest that these measures reflect the core symptoms found in schizotypal and schizoid personality disorder (Bailey, West, Widiger, & Freiman, 1993). Negative symptoms were significantly predicted by Neuroticism (+), Extraversion (-), Openness (-), and …

Estimating The Mean Ocean-Bay Exchange Rate Of The Chesapeake Bay, Jay A. Austin Jan 2002

Estimating The Mean Ocean-Bay Exchange Rate Of The Chesapeake Bay, Jay A. Austin

CCPO Publications

A model of the salt balance in the Chesapeake Bay is discussed, which takes into account only time-dependent riverine input and mean ocean-bay exchange. Estimates of (spatial) mean bay salinity are made using two different data sources: a 16 year record of surveys taken by the Environmental Protection Agency's Chesapeake Bay Program, and a 10 year record of hydrographic sections taken in the lower bay by the Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography at Old Dominion University. Using United States Geological Survey river flow data to force the model, both data sets are consistent with this simple model and both imply …

Methods For Caculating The Chesapeake Bay Benthic Index Of Biotic Integrity, Roberto J. Llansó, Daniel M. Dauer Jan 2002

Methods For Caculating The Chesapeake Bay Benthic Index Of Biotic Integrity, Roberto J. Llansó, Daniel M. Dauer

Benthic Applications

The Chesapeake Bay benthic index of biotic integrity (B-IBI) was developed to assess benthic community health and environmental quality in Chesapeake Bay. The B-IBI evaluates the ecological condition of a sample by comparing values of key benthic community attributes (“metrics”) to reference values expected under non-degraded conditions in similar habitat types. It is therefore a measure of deviation from reference conditions.

The B-IBI is used by the Chesapeake Bay Benthic Monitoring Program, which is conducted by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MD DNR) and by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VA DEQ). The program contains two primary elements: …

Regulating Reproductive Technologies In Canada, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Albert Wallrap Jan 2002

Regulating Reproductive Technologies In Canada, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Albert Wallrap

Articles & Book Chapters

This chapter will identify and examine the major legal issues raised by the development and proliferation of technologies involved in assisted reproduction. It will review the application of existing legal principles, statutes and common law rules to these issues, and will illustrate the uncertainty present in the current legal regime in Canada. The chapter will then evaluate the need for a unified regulatory framework for reproductive technologies ("RTs").' While the focus of the chapter is an identification and review of the legal issues, it should be understood that these are shaped in a moral, ethical and social context.
